Circa-1890 tavern serving American comfort fare in a dark-wood setting with a TV-equipped bar.

Was driving through Rhinebeck and decided to eat here despite the not-so-glowing reviews. It’s been a tavern since 1890, it’s rustic, dark and it feels like stepping back in time when you go in. We sat at the bar and had a few drinks. Ordered the seafood sample appetizer, and that was one of the best, perfectly cooked scallops and shrimp I’ve ever had. I also had the NY strip steak medium-rare, and it was cooked the way it should be, paired with creamy mashed potatoes with a side of gravy and green beans. It was a delightful dinner. BF said his burger was one of the best burgers he had. Service was friendly and fast, and everything was priced reasonably this side of New York . I’m looking forward to coming back.

This has always been one of my favorite restaurants growing up. Then we moved to Florida. We were up visiting family and had to stop. So glad we did. Food and service is just as good. They kept all the nostalgia! Brought back many happy memories!! Loved it!!

Let me say I love Fosters, the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is more about a pricing issue with the menu. The London broil is listed @ 15 dollars with cheese and onions. My son in law ordered it with no cheese and just onions, I also ordered the London broil with no cheese and The waitress asked if I wanted onions and mushrooms and I said yes. I was charged $19, I get that I was charged $2 for the mushrooms but again why 19 and not 17. I questioned the waitress about it when I received the check I was told that they were getting new menus and that the price on the menu was wrong or the listing saying it came with onions was wrong. She then left with the check and said let me see what I can do, came back and just handed me exactly the same check with no apology or price change. I have absolutely no issue with the food there. It is delicious but I believe that you should stick by what you put on your prices on the menu or at minimum tell them when they’re ordering that there are up charges that are not listed on the menu. I know it’s not a lot of money and it’s not like I wouldn’t have ordered the food the same way. I just want to know before the check arrives and that when you say you’re going to speak to the manager, you come back and give me an explanation or tell me that you’re not going to change the check. This will not stop me from going back to Foster’s again as the food is delicious. It’s just something that bugs me when restaurants do this. Forewarned is forearmed. By the way, the London broil was cooked perfectly and was delicious.

What a great and inexpensive find in an upscale town. This old horse barn has a dark fun ambiance and very good service.
But it’s the food that will bring you back! I had some of the best pork chops ever and my wife loved the London broil with mushroom sauce. Great comfort food you won’t be disappointed.

We arrived around 2 on a Saturday and were seated immediately. Our server, Adlai, was amazing, friendly and prompt. It’s got a cool, dark vibe. We had the garden gimlet and a dirty martini and both were tasty and strong. We shared the calamari which were nice and crispy. I had the buffalo chicken soup which was the soup of the day and it was delicious. For my entree, I had the strip steak with mushrooms, which came with mashed potatoes with gravy and green beans. I added broiled scallops as well. The scallops were the miss of the meal. They were very white. Usually I imagine them a little browned to up the flavor. The rest of my meal was tasty and the steak was a nice medium rare. My husband’s French dip was delicious. We both had big enough portions to bring some home for a 2nd meal. Will absolutely return.

The fish and chips had 2 cod pieces that looked like chicken fingers. I was skeptical of the presentation but was tasty and fresh. The nachos for app were also excellent. Good spot!

So I have been a patron for a very long time and it has been a few years since dining here. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon so we decided to find a restaurant to eat outside. We had our pooch with us and this popped as dog friendly and it was. We were promptly seated and a manager came over with menus and within a few minutes our waitress had a ton with water for the dog. We ordered lunch and came out very quickly and was cooked well. I had the Rueben with the homage potato salad. The Rueben was great, I wasn’t a fan of the potato salad but not a big deal as there are so many ways to make it. Overall a great experience and will stop in again when in the area.

Stopped in for lunch on a beautiful Fall afternoon. They have a lovely patio for outdoor seating which is where we day. There was plenty of indoor seating as well. I had a Reuben with Pastrami and a local beer. Everything was delicious and the service was friendly and efficient. I will certainly return if I am in the area.

My wife and i live an hour and a half away, this restaurant is so perfect and dear to us, we visit for every special occasion. Food is always spot-on, service is great, and sometimes we’re surprised by live music. Always worth the trip, thank you, Fosters!

very cute coach house-themed American eatery. The staff accommodated my party immediately, and service was fast. The menu has American classics. I got the French onion soup and was happy with my order. Lots of seating available, making this place great for larger parties!
