When driving on I94 in Eastern Montana, take exit 49 and treat yourself to some amazing food whipped up from scratch and served with panache! This unassuming place would not register in most people’s minds as a restaurant as they drove by, but it is a diamond in the rough! Settled in next to a small RV park, it serves up a limited menu, but one that has a lot of variety for most palettes. Our meals came complete with generous portions and complex, yet balanced flavors. We all enjoyed the Pork LoMein, Grilled Salmon and the Chicken Pasta. We’ll be passing through again in a week and will definitely be dropping in to see what inventive dishes the chef has on ‘the board’ for that night! Skip the usual places and make your way out to the Fort Custer Restaurant and Bar. Inside or on the patio, be prepared to spend some quality time with the food, drink and company.

If you blink, you will miss it. The Fort at 49 is always bringing good food to Custer. Dave is a Chef chef, not a line cook, so while there is a Philly Cheese steak, there is also prime rib and dishes like the Hawaiian chicken. The chicken was boneless thigh meat breaded and fried to juicy perfection and drizzled with a sauce whose name I would butcher. The taste was different and awesome, and when paired with the homemade pineapple slaw, brought another great dish to the restaurant. Reservations are suggested and there is outside seating for those cool nights. You will be happy you stopped to eat at the Fort!

Just driving through the area and it was time for dinner. Found Fort Custer Restaurant and Bar. Best grilled salmon I have had. It came with delicious mashed potatoes and veggies all with the perfect spices. Such a pleasant surprise. If you are in the area make a stop here!

A professionally trained chef creates wonders on the side of the interstate in an unassuming building. The best meal of our entire road trip included chicken fried steak, fried pickles, chicken wings, steak salad, NY strip steak, hamburger, fried fish, brownie sundae, peach- rhubarb cobbler and regional beers. Friendly and efficient owners love what they do and the people they encounter. Being the only business on this exit it would be easy to pass by and forego a meal to remember. Taking a chance is what a road trip is all about. This gem is on our radar now and will be a stop for years to come.

Chicken fried steak is lightly breaded and juicy. Gravy is definitely not from a packet. Brazed pork shank, alot of meat! Excellent. Coconut shrimp nicely done and the coconut sauce is the hero.

Clean, fine service, food was simple. I had a bacon cheese burger, it came with a patty, bacon and cheese that is it. The fries were soggy. It was a good portion but very greasy.
