This isn’t your typical New York bagel experience and that’s what makes it special!

Forage offers a unique take on breakfast, and we give it a 5 out of 5 every time. The bagels are sourdough and wood-fired, and you can smell that delicious, toasty aroma the moment you walk in.

My personal favorite is the sea salt, it perfectly complements the tangy, chewy dough. The everything bagel is a bit different, with flavors like fennel. I’m not a fan of fennel, but my husband absolutely loves it.

This place is popular! So expect to wait in line, wait for your food, or wait for your online order. We plan for it, especially on weekends. Honestly, it’s often faster to drive over and order in person than to use the online system.

But good things come to those who wait and this place is worth it! When you walk in, you get to check out the rotating coffee specials (yes, you should order one) and the gorgeous row of pastries, a tasty bonus every time!

Note: While there is seating, this is predominantly a takeaway establishment, so plan to grab and go, or snag a seat if you’re lucky.

Overall a great location for a light meal or coffee chat. The staff is incredibly warm and were even kind enough to field some of my questions about the latte I ordered. Ambience was nice, although it seemed a little more industrial than one might expect for a coffee shop/bagel cafe. Options are plentiful but even the ‘bottom of the barrel’ poppyseed bagel w/ plain cream cheese (what I ordered after showing up quite late in the day) was great for the price! I would, especially since it’s a holiday special, highly recommend the Gingerbread latte, although there was arguably too much residue from the syrup or coffee bean at the bottom of my cup, making for a somewhat grainy last mouthful. Nevertheless, I would have to say in terms of the quality for price, this is one of the best places I’ve been to on the East Coast.

My first time there today and it was so so yummy! I ordered the lox breakfast sandwich because it’s my favorite way to have a bagel and it was one of the yummiest lox and bagels I have ever had. What really stood out to me was the fennel seed on the everything. Also, the combo of the fresh dill, pickled onions and lettuce! I will definitely tell people about this!

My first visit and it was a great experience. The freshness of the bagels, great customer service, and the overall atmosphere were all exceptional. I had an everything bagel with veggie cream cheese, it was amazing. I am looking forward to being a repeat customer. It was also very cool watching them make the bagels while I waited for my order.

Forage is one of my favorite spots for bagels in Portland, hands down. Based on the food alone, I would recommend this place every time. Unfortunately, the service today was disappointing.
I stopped in to grab bagels for a long holiday drive tomorrow to see family in Northern Maine. Despite the snowy roads, I wanted to treat my family to my favorite bagels in Southern Maine. When I arrived, there were only 2–3 other customers, a seemingly calm morning before the holiday rush.

I asked for a dozen bagels and was told, “No, if you want that many bagels you can only preorder, per management’s request.” Stunned, I considered leaving, but I had just driven 30 minutes through snow and could see piles of bagels behind the counter.
I politely asked if I could at least get a half dozen, thinking maybe a dozen was too much. (It was odd feeling like I was ordering too many bagels at a bagel shop.) Again, they said no, so I asked to speak with a manager. There were no signs on the door or message on their website about this policy.

The General Manager, Phoebe, came over with a lot of energy and reiterated that due to holiday demand, they couldn’t sell me bagels and that I’d have to come back at 11 a.m. for leftovers. I explained that I wasn’t available then and had driven through snow to get these bagels. Her response? She told me she drove from Lewiston this morning and that I should “get over it.”
Completely taken aback, I said, “I just wanted bagels for my family, and this is how I’m treated by management?” She stormed behind the counter, threw a dozen bagels in a bag, charged me, and told me to leave.

This type of customer service is unacceptable. Forage makes some of the best bagels in Portland, but after today, I don’t think I’ll return. No one should be made to feel that way for simply trying to buy bagels at a bagel shop.

Forage market makes amazing hand rolled crispy wood fired bagels!! Nationally heralded by Saveur Magazine as one of America’s best bagels. I ordered a toasted sesame bagel with homemade veggie cream cheese and a large cold brew. A perfect breakfast and a great way to begin my day. Highly recommend!

For real the best bagels I’ve ever had! I also love that they are generous with the cream cheese so you don’t even have to ask for extra! I’m back home in Nebraska from my Maine vacation and wishing for another amazing bagel.

One of the top three bagel places in Maine! Great selection of spreads. A word of caution, if you get an egg sandwich and you’re planning on eating it in the car, ask for it to be fully cooked. They come out runny, which is delicious when you’re sitting at a table, but will get all over your clothes if you’re trying to eat it on the go.

Quick stop before a LONG drive home and the bagels here made it so much more enjoyable. I’ve never had a bagel quite like these. Excellent coffee too.
