Fontano Subs – A True Italian Gem
Stopped by Fontano Subs and tried the Wiseguy — absolutely amazing! Everything tasted incredibly fresh — the bread was perfectly crusty on the outside and soft inside, and the meats and toppings were full of flavor. You can tell they use high-quality, fresh ingredients and really care about what they serve.
The place has that classic, traditional Italian sub shop vibe — simple, cozy, and full of character. The staff was friendly and quick, and the whole experience felt authentic from start to finish.
If you’re craving a real Italian-style sandwich made right, Fontano Subs is a must-visit. Highly recommended!

Got a 12 inch sub. It was a good quality sandwich. I got the American with everything on it. Changed the cheese for provolone. Overall 10/10 sandwich for the size and freshness of the bread was refreshing. Place is like a tiny store with drinks, chips and other stuff. Location has tables inside to sit and enjoy.

Food: the make pretty good sandwiches. The options for how to make your sandwich are very diverse. Not only that they’re totally worth it with having large sandwiches that can make you full. They do not skimp out on loading the sandwich. Which is really good! The bread is fresh and really compliments the sandwich. (One little thing was the juice was coming out of the sandwich from all the toppings, so it was a messy but the taste was great!)
Service: usually not too busy when I’ve gone. Register and service for sandwich is quick and easy. **may provide discounts
Atmosphere: it is a tiny spot, but I don’t notice that much traffic so it isn’t really that much of an issue. Tables are spread out pretty good so that you have space to eat if you choose to eat inside. However I would agree that taking out to go would be the best option. Also no restroom. The cleanness of the location is decent. Very causal.

Stopped in after touring UIC. What a delight to find this place. A customer was waiting for a large order and told us that we should order the pot roast sandwich. We ordered that and the meatball sub. Both were delicious. The service was fast and the atmosphere old school small grocery was just perfect. We will definitely be back.

Turkey sandwich on my first visit. They are not skimpy on the deli meats, you will be satisfied with the quality and amount. Add the vinegar and oil, it’s definitely a plus. Will be back for the meatball sub.

Came in on a Saturday and ordered the Italian beef with a bag of chips. The sandwich had good flavor and was just what I needed. The place felt simple and laid back, which I liked. It had that classic deli feel without trying too hard. I’d come back for lunch again.

Had the Meatball sandwich, delicious. Good amount of sauce to meatball, bread was fresh and soft but strong enough to hold up against the fillings. Flavor of the meat and the sauce were balanced.
Also had the Italian special sub. Classic Italian deli sandwich, exactly what you want if you like Italian subs.

I been going here for 3 years now. Never ordered online and never will again. I placed order at 10:40 am through GrubHub for a 11:25 pick up.
Stand in line behind another fellow who walk in front of me. We both waited with no acknowledgement from no one. Finally he step up and said here for pick up when they said next in the order line. They said wait and he turned around and walked out. One guy in a yellow shirt just looked at me with a smirk on his face. I said here for pick up. He nods his head goes in the back a circles around as you can see on the mirror and walks out with saying a word. Very poor customer service. 11:35 is here and guy comes out putting on his apron says can I help you. Finally, I told him Kevin for pick up. He sees my ticket on the top be made sandwiche list and proceeds to make it. Mean while 2 customers that walked in after me had there sandwiches made and left. Please do something about your Togo order line. My order was 0df19fcb on 03/02/2026 at 11:36 when I left.

Took the blue line all the way from Irving park to try fontano’s subs. It’s your little neighborhood deli in the city. Walking in you can tell its a mom and pop shop with history. They have they’re grocery isle with different Italian options on the shelves. We order the 12”turkey sub on white with provolone (mayo, lettuce , tomato, cucumbers, onions, oil and vinegar and salt and pepper) and a 8” sausage sub on white with provolone and marinara sauce and hot peppers. The turkey sub slap especially how we ordered it all the flavors worked together. The sausage sub needs a bit more sauce but was as good as the turkey. The hot peppers were definitely hot so be careful. 10/10 will be back again.
