I wanted to like this place, I was really disappointed. Over the 5 years of living in Des Moines, Iowa we had always passed by the Flying Mango and wanted to try it.
I ordered the Brisket, and goat cheese and chicken rice, nothing had any flavor, I mostly had fat on one of my briskets, I used bbq sauce on everything to elevate the dishes.
The atmosphere was great, the art on the wall was cool.
Flying mango needs to step it up.

Food and service were just okay. Started with the special brisket queso… It was good. I had the Root Beer & Molasses Braised Pork (pic). It was okay. Expected more of a glaze or sauce on the pork but instead it was dried out and did not get any kind of RB or Molasses flavor. The cheese grits were good though. My sister had What Guy Had and the ribs were amazing tender and flavorful. The Catfish Cake was extremely salty… Or at least the sauce was. The red beans and rice had fully uncooked rice in it and was inedible. The cornbread with cinnamon butter (pic) was good but fairly dry… Even the butter was somewhat dry and didn’t spread well. When we finally got our waitresses attention (when we were mostly done) I did ask for a side of honey which actually made the cornbread really good and should always be served with it. My sister stated that she would go back just for the ribs… to go.

Never heard about this place before! We drove by and decided to stop in and couldn’t be happier! I love the semi-open kitchen in the front room. The service was quick and friendly, the prices were very affordable (especially for the amount you get), and the food was DELICIOUS!!! This is the best brisket I’ve ever had in Iowa! The caramelized bark on the brisket added beautiful depth to the buttery meat. Kind of surprised I’d find it in a place called “Flying Mango”, but alas; that’s where I found it!

Apparently Guy Fieri has been here? They named a dish after him. It includes a little bit of everything and that’s what I got. Hubby almost ordered another meal to-go cause I stole all his brisket. It was so good! Also, if you’re used to collards from the SE US, then you’ll love these! Amazing. All of it!

Shout out to Flying Mango for this amazing brisket sandwich and the potato of the day. I ordered it to go. Ready when they said it would be (actually earlier). The brisket melted in your mouth, it was so tender. The bbq sauce paired perfectly with the meat!! Best barbecue in town. My son and I split this… two very satisfied customers. Definitely a place to go in Des Moines. Great food, good people, and the perfect atmosphere!

The food was amazing. Cat, our waitress made this dinner an experience. She cared about how we felt when we walked out. We will be returning for sure! Our table of 7 all had different items from the menu and everyone loved everything.

Flying Mango is always great. We can’t get there enough. This was the first time we ordered ahead. It worked out very well. We were able to schedule a pickup time. We arrived at FM on time and the order was ready to go. Can’t beat that. Just a remarkable restaurant.

So I took my wife here for valentine’s day. We were greated when arriving and the staff were very polite. We arrive at 7:50 for our 8p reservation and were seated by 8:00pm. The waitress was amazing very sweat amd attentive. But the food was opposite of the service. First we ordered cherry cokes and they were extremely to sweet as they had a cherry extract. I ordered the rib and brisket plate with a side of red beans and rice and mashed potatoes. The potatoes were good but the red beans and rice was not. The rice and beans were undercooked. The ribs were over cooked as well and lacked seasoning. The brisket was cooked properly and was extremely tender but lacked overall flavor. My wife ordered the chicken combo and let me tell you the chicken tasted like you put a raw chicken into an electric smoker. There was absolutely no flavor at all. Overall the service was amazing but the quality of the food was not. I watched this on DDD prior to coming in and let me tell you the food look absolutely nothing like I saw on DDD. Let’s just say I don’t plan on returning anytime soon.

Waited about 45 minutes for food when they were not even that busy. Ordered a margarita with no alcohol and was brought one with alcohol. Then ordered the BBQ Jackfruit Sandwich because I am vegan. The sandwich I was brought did not look like jackfruit so I made sure to double check with the waitress and she assured me that it was. I then took a couple bites and was sure it wasn’t jackfruit. I checked with her again and she finally realized that I was right and they had given me pulled pork. Luckily I am not allergic or kosher. They took the price of the sandwich off the bill but not the price of the alcoholic drink. I was with 2 other people who both thought their food was below average. One of them was also sick after eating there.

The food was great! I had the redneck surf and turf with an extra side of shrimp and the goat cheese grits and the NA ginger mango drink. The ribs were SLIGHTLY dry but that was taken care of with a little side of their excellent BBQ sauce. I’ve been in town for a few days and hadn’t eaten anywhere to write home about until tonight

We were in the mood for something new and exciting, as usual. After a quick search, one of the first spots that caught our eye was The Flying Mango. The name immediately grabbed my attention—it’s unique and intriguing. A quirky name like that usually promises some equally unique food, right?

The place itself is a small, hole-in-the-wall restaurant that could maybe fit 50 people at most. When you first walk in, you pass by the kitchen and a small bar, with the dining area located on the opposite side. When we visited, it was pretty quiet—just us and one other group—so the vibe was laid-back and relaxed.

Our server got us seated quickly and was incredibly attentive to everything we needed. She was, without a doubt, the highlight of our visit. Her exceptional service was the main reason for the high rating I gave this place, because if it were solely based on the food, it wouldn’t have scored nearly as well.

One of my friends ordered a couple of adult drinks, but they ended up sending them back because they just weren’t good. Now, let’s talk about the food, which is probably why you’re reading this. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with garlic mashed potatoes—or at least that’s what they called them.

The pulled pork sandwich was fantastic. They definitely know what they’re doing with their BBQ. The pork was sweet, tangy, and spicy all at once, and the bread was perfectly baked with just the right amount of warmth. However, the mashed potatoes? They can keep those and take them back to wherever they got them. They weren’t good at all. In fact, none of the sides really impressed anyone in our group. My so-called “garlic” mashed potatoes didn’t have any garlic flavor whatsoever, and honestly, it seemed like they only had butter in them. They definitely need to rethink that recipe.

Overall, I wouldn’t come back for the food, but I would return for the customer service and relaxed atmosphere. The team there really knows how to make you feel welcome, and that goes a long way. If they ever bring their food up to the level of their service, this place could be something special. Keep up the great work, and hopefully one day the food will match the fantastic vibe you’ve already got going on.
