Simple and welcoming place located at the El Cajon boulevard in SD. This is one of my favorite places to go and grab a bite for a cheap price and a lot of delicious food! Not a fancy restaurant at all but the place has a unique and good vibe that makes your feel comfortable. I like the African songs they play in the background! They have combos menu and also separate dishes with a fair price. I always ask for a Jerk Sweet Chicken which cocoon rice and Greens. I also have tried the Sambusas and Goat Curry dish once and they were both amazing!! Service is always good!

Been here twice and the food is delicious! The oxtail are huge and meaty. Generous portion of coconut rice or ugali along with the choice of veggies in which we have gotten the collard greens twice. My daughter ordered the shrimp curry before and was tempted to order again but went with the beef short ribs. The flavor is tasty that’s for sure! I like inside for dining in because it’s spacious and clean looking for the most part. The parking can be a bit of a hassle.. the 1st time we just parked at the Mc Donald’s across the street and the 2nd time was street parking (we got lucky) I really like this restaurant and plan on having it in my rotation!

I’ve had Flavors of East Africa at the Hillcrest Farmer’s market and at their brick & mortar location. Both excellent. The jerk chicken, lentils, plantains, lamb, egg plant, and rice were all gluten free. As I celiac I haven’t had issues with their food. I recommend a sweet & spicy jerk chicken combo.

The smell of the Flavors of East Africa pop up at the Ocean Beach Farmers Market drew me in & the long-but-quick-moving line assured me that the taste would be just as good. I had the medium sweet jerk chicken plate with plantains, saffron rice & curried lentils. It was all delicious, but I will be dreaming about those plantains for a long time to come! Plenty of vegetarian options. Big portions – the medium was enough for two meals. Reasonably priced. Highly recommend!

We ordered for take out but then decided to eat there. The food was delicious. Flavorful. We ordered oxtail, with coconut rice/plantains. And also jerk chicken, ugali and lentils, with a yummy purple colored drink, very refreshing. The waitress was very sweet, she let us sample other drinks to see if we would like it also.

I had the goat curry with ugali, greens and chapati. The food was absolutely delicious and the choice selection deep. My partner had a vegan option (the establishment is well known for its vegan menu). I was a big fan of their hibiscus juice but also had the passion and mango to go. The service was great; friendly and helpful with suggestions and favorites. The ambiance definitely made me feel like I was in a restaurant in t he heart of Nairobi city. I’m a big fan!

The hostess was very friendly when greeting us. My friend ordered an Oxtail dinner with mixed rice and plantains. I had the Beef stew with mixed rice, collards, and an assortment of Sambusas on the side. We sat on the outside patio, which is dog friendly and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I highly recommend this spot for a great homestyle lunch or dinner.

Great jerk chicken! Update: To Go Order of Sweet African Jerk Chicken with Ugali (cornmeal) and Biringanya (eggplant). The amount of chicken was small and what I’d expect for a side portion, and was placed in one of the small sections of the container. In the other small section was the Ugali, which is flavorless on its own, but ok when mixed with the Biringanya sauce. The Biringanya occupied the large section of the container, but was mostly sauce. It was good that they wrapped the container in plastic wrap, since the sauces of the chicken and Biringanya went everywhere in the container and surely would have leaked into the bag. The flavors of the chicken and Biringanya were very good, however the portions were less than what I’d expect for a $15.95 entree. Update: The dine in meals are still served in To Go plastic boxes. Ordered the sweet jerk chicken, with coconut rice and eggplant; and the beef stew, with saffron rice and collard greens.
