African art lines the walls at this casual East African spot serving up curries, stews & sambusas.

I came to Flavors of East Africa today for the first time years. I brought my folks with me because they’ve never had East African food. Overall the experience was awesome and just as good as I remember from years back!
We ordered sweet jerked chicken, Kuku curry chicken, fried eggplant, plus two types of rice, collard greens, and mashed potatoes. Of course, these side items all have African names but for the sake of clarity I’ve written out their nearest English adjacent dish titles.
The chicken in both dishes was absolutely incredible! It tasted like it had been stewing for hours. The flavors were deep, aromatic, and memorable. It’s hard to choose a favorite between the two chicken dishes, but the jerked chicken’s sauce was incredible…at the same time, the chicken breast in the curry was extremely succulent and had a coconut-y vibe.
The veggies and rice were all pretty tasty as well, with the mashed potatoes and eggplant being highlights. The eggplant’s tomato relish topping is a little oily, so it pairs better with some rice. The turmeric & ginger juice I had was also delightful—they added some sugar or honey to it so it wasn’t extremely overpowering.
All in all, I definitely recommend Flavors of East Africa. It’s a really high-quality, consistent spot for amazing meat dishes—including oxtails, stewed beef, goat curry, and more—and it isn’t overpriced for the portion and level of craftsmanship they bring.
P.S. If you’re looking for a slightly cheaper version of the same great food, come anytime before 5pm to get access to the lunch combos, which bring the same punch for $3-5 less per plate.

I ordered goat curry and a side of pilau rice and mukimo online and the presentation and taste was horrible!!!!
Even before I tasted it, had already lost appetite! They had the pilau rice, mukimo and goat curry stew on same bowl. It was so messy!!
I wish they would separate all the meals in different small bowls. The stew had messed even the bag, because it was put mixed with all the other foods in a take away plastic bowl that was not air tight.
It like whoever packed was in a hurry yet I had ordered the previous day for delivery.
Their samosas are so tiny are not worth it, they are like 1 inch long, even a toddler would put the whole thing in their mouth once! It’s 5 dollars wasted!
Their goat curry was horrible, so spicy and full of small bones instead of meat, not to mention the rice, poor quality rice, no excuse for it, even the local Walmart sells cheap better basmati rice that tastes better. Their chapati were full of sugar, thank God I only ordered a quarter, seems like someone poured the sugar by mistake.
Overall, I would rate -1 if I had that option.
Not ordering again!!

Ann was so hospitable and the food and service were great! We tried the lunch combinations so we were able to try 3 types of chicken, beef, 4 veggies, all 3 rice and ugali. Lots of food for the money. We enjoyed sitting outside on a beautiful day.

I randomly chose this place because it has an appeal. So I went inside and ordered for to go.
I chose large Nyama “meat” Combo.
Beef stew ($2.00 more) Biriganya eggplant, and Sukukmawiki collard greens.
Well, to be honest the food was delicious but the meat was really few especially the beef stew. Which has $2.00 more. And couldn’t see more of jerk chicken. It has more eggplants and more collard greens on top. In just one container they put everything in there.they were mixed altogether and couldn’t taste which one is which. No small container for beef and for sweet jerk chicken.
It was not worth it. They should’ve put more beef stew. I will probably try another african food next time.

The food tastes great, very well flavored. And the lunch portion was overflowing my plate. I ordered the spicy jerk chicken, beef stew, coconut rice, fried plantain, and eggplant. They gave me a sample of the ugali, which was delicious with the stews. I would definitely come back.

Great jerk chicken! Update: To Go Order of Sweet African Jerk Chicken with Ugali (cornmeal) and Biringanya (eggplant). The amount of chicken was small and what I’d expect for a side portion, and was placed in one of the small sections of the container. In the other small section was the Ugali, which is flavorless on its own, but ok when mixed with the Biringanya sauce. The Biringanya occupied the large section of the container, but was mostly sauce. It was good that they wrapped the container in plastic wrap, since the sauces of the chicken and Biringanya went everywhere in the container and surely would have leaked into the bag. Be careful, the Spicy Jerk Chicken is delicious but over the top hot. So don’t order it unless you can take the heat. Update: Ordered the Chicken Curry, Saffron Rice and Collard Greens. All were very tasty. Update: Got the Tilapia with Saffron Rice and Collard Greens. Very tasty. Our new favorite. Got Sweet Jerk Chicken. It was mostly sauce with tiny chicken fragments. Tasty, but hardly any meat. Update: Got Sweet Jerk Chicken and Curry Chicken with Saffron Rice, Collard Greens, and Nyoyo. Everything was delicious. The jerk chicken portion was small again with mostly small chicken fragments. Update: Got Sweet Jerk Chicken and Curry Chicken with Saffron Rice, Collard Greens, Plantains, and Beans & Corn. Everything was delicious. Update: Got the Sweet Jerk Chicken dinner plate with plantains and saffron rice, and the Fried Fish dinner plate with collard greens and saffron rice. Both were delicious! We also were given free donuts for dessert. They were made fresh and were like excellent beignets. Update: Got the Beef Stew and Chicken Curry entrees. Both were very good! We didn’t go to the restaurant but we had their food at the Ocean Beach Farmers Market and it was INCREDIBLE. We had decent portions of both the sweet and the spicy (level 4 out of 10) jerk chicken, a bunch of different rices, collard greens, and fried plantains (oh the plantains…!). Highly recommend their food!
