My first bad experience at Firehouse Subs in Winston-Salem, NC was about a year ago. I went in to get a sub, and the manager placed my bread directly on the counter while adjusting food instead of on a proper surface. She told me it was fine, but basic food handling standards say otherwise — at the very least, there should have been paper or something under it.
I decided to give them another chance today, but unfortunately had another disappointing experience. I ordered a meatball sub, and the employee pulled meatballs from the warmer, then went to the back for more than five minutes. He came back with the same meatballs and started making my sub. Food should be prepared fresh and in front of the customer — that’s basic expectation and transparency.
I spoke with the manager, explained that I own a company myself, and suggested that better training might help. Instead of hearing me out, she argued back, which was disappointing.
On top of that, the bathrooms were dirty and the floors were not clean. I really do love Firehouse Subs as a brand, but this location is not meeting the standard. I also tried calling customer service, but the number didn’t work.
I hope the district manager sees this and helps get this store back on track before it goes downhill any further.
This place has really gone downhill. The employees were friendly, but they spent the entire time talking loudly about their personal drama — even over the TV (see video). The men’s restroom was in bad shape: dirty, with a loose toilet seat, no hand soap, and a broken towel dispenser (though there was a loose roll available). I had to use the women’s restroom just to wash my hands before ordering.
Then, right after I placed my order, a septic truck pulled up. They ran a hose from the back room, through the dining area, and out to the running diesel truck parked in front of the restaurant (see photo). Needless to say, it was not a relaxing lunch — especially for the price of the sub. Unfortunately, I’ll be heading to Jersey Mike’s next time. VERY disappointed.

I recently visited Firehouse Subs in Winston-Salem, and it was an outstanding experience from start to finish! The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making sure my order was just right. The restaurant was clean, well-organized, and had a great atmosphere.
Now, let’s talk about the food—absolutely delicious! I ordered the Hook & Ladder sub, and it was packed with fresh ingredients, perfectly toasted, and full of flavor. The meats were tender, the cheese melted just right, and the toppings were fresh and crisp. You can really taste the quality in every bite.
What sets Firehouse Subs apart is not just their amazing food but also their commitment to the community. Knowing that a portion of proceeds supports first responders makes every meal even more satisfying.
If you’re looking for a great sub spot in Winston-Salem, this is the place to go. Highly recommended!
It’s been about a year since we last visit this place.
We live on the other side of lexington.
We’re on a budget, so we try to treat ourselves once in awhile when we can.
Well it was such a let down on this visit.
First off no Garlic bread, bacon and another meat (which I don’t remember because I wasn’t interest at the time.
Assist manager arguing with a consumer in front of 4 of us, waiting in line.
They ask us for a name, so my wife gave the cashier her name.
When tqhey called her name I went to pick it up.
There were 4 meals in bag. We ordered 2.
So I said not ours. They said the name again. They were frustrated so I tried to lighten things by I saying I’ll take it. They had no humor.
Out of frustration they couldn’t find out what was going on.
My wife’s name is a common name so I said is it possible that there’s another person with that name.
Sure enough. The person wasn’t there so I’m assuming it was an online order. Why isn’t the online separate from in line ?
Hey corporate I have an idea, with technology why not have a digital screen that shows the persons order (with a number, not name) that it’s being worked on and then when it’s done.
( like Domino’s pizza stores )
If the person who is calling out the name, like the one who was working that day, mumbles and speak low and he was the boss that day. Really seems backwards.
So we had to wait (more) to get our meal. But we still got it before a man who was there before we were. He said that they missed he’s order.
Unbelievable !
Except for the cashier person, the other three seemed to be disorganized and frustrated.
The food was just OK.
Will we choose Firehouse again, sure at another one.
Question:
What’s with not having cherry limeade ?
Is this just a store thing or corporate ?
Enclosed is pic’s of the men’s room
Why do I say that?
Lights were off for half the restaurant, the temperature was quite warm inside, the staff was truly rushing around with only 3 people working the entire store during lunch. Lots of hand made signs like “don’t take more than 1 or 2 sauce packets”. The soda machine was out of most of the drinks, and the ice ran out while I was watching other guests get frustrated about the lack of drink options.
Also the carbonation was way off, a ton of folks were pouring drinks out after tasting even the diet drinks.
At one point someone said “tell customers that the only drinks we have are diet, and tea” but this was 25minutes after I already ordered.
The sub was ok, the prices have gone up over time and I think it crossed the line of not being worth it.
It was just… meh. For $14 I would recommend somewhere else.
Poor in inventory management
I left without ordering at 6pm. So it wasn’t a closing situation.. just poor management
