Update: The restaurant offered me a free sub and combo, which I appreciate. But, the manager called me and told me “it was quite immature as a public official to put a company on blast like this with your review”. I happen to be a City Councilman, not sure why that matters, I’m still a customer. Not great to call a long time customer “immature” for an honest review with pictures.
This location used to have great food. However in the last year and a half it has gone downhill. Multiple times I have ordered from here and the quality has been subpar at best. Today, for example, I online ordered a medium sub with double meat, extra toasted bread, with an extra pickle spear on the side. When I got home, my sub was cold, had a normal amount of meat, the bread was barely toasted, and I didn’t even have one pickle spear let alone the extra I asked for. This isn’t the first time this has happened to me at this location.
I used 12,000 loyalty points for this order too! I normally enjoy Firehouse Subs, and have for years. I hope the quality issues start to be fixed.

I walked in to place an order for lunch for takeout. I was not greeted upon walking in. I still continued to walk to the counter to place an order. Before ordering I asked the host “What all comes on the sandwich?” (Inquiring about the Large Steak & Cheese). The host then said “Mayo, cheese, onions & bell peppers”. I then said “okay, I’ll take that with extra cheese and extra mayo”. I proceeded to purchase the sandwich and combo ($22.33). When I get to work, and as I’m about to get ready to eat, I look on the sandwich and see that it has mustard all on it. I then called the restaurant to speak to someone about it, and the lady that I spoke with was rude. She told me that all the sandwiches come with mustard, and I never said I didn’t want mustard because it wasn’t noted. I tried explaining that the host never told me it comes with mustard and I “asked” what all comes on the sandwich and he listed everything but that! The lady then proceeded to say “well there’s no way to verify that”. I said are you serious, verify? She continues to say well if you can’t bring the sandwich back, then it’s nothing we can do. I tried explaining that I’m at work in a different city and that was just a place I stopped at. She didn’t care. Nor did she have enough care or exercise any customer service skills with just apologizing about the order just being wrong. A simple apology could have sufficed. I can accept an order being wrong it happens, but poor customer service and talking to customers that way I will not! Customers is what keeps the business running!

I was sad when the Merrillville Firehouse Subs closed. It’s good stuff. Hot tasty sandwiches and good soups. It’s along the line of a Quiznos, if those exist any longer. A big step up from Subway, but a similar concept. The atmosphere pays homage to firemen. A bit pricey a medium, soup and a drink topped $20.

Tonight was the first time my family and I have visited a Firehouse Subs. I must say, I was not disappointed! The food was too notch, the price was reasonable, the atmosphere was relaxed and fun, and the staff was great. I would highly recommend this establishment.
