My husband ordered the fish tacos, I had the carnitas plate, and we shared the rolled tacos and a lengua taco, as pictured below.
Filibertos is a chain restaurant that I would not consider “authentic”. I’m not comparing this to other tex-mex restaurants in town. It’s a very California/Tex-Mex cuisine that is fast-food adjacent. The aesthetic will likely remind you of Taco Bell (bright and bold).
Given that I’m comparing this to more authentic restaurants and Mexican-American restaurants some of this will sound harsh.
The salsa has a good strong flavor. It’s not what I’m used to, but it has a good jalapeño flavor (smokey/earthy with a little heat). It’s served in a shared bowl. The chips are the thicker variety common to some Mexican restaurants.
The atmosphere felt a lot like a Taco Bell with table service. The seating felt a little crammed in together and I kept hitting the echair beside me with my elbow. There was barely room to squeeze into the seat by pulling one out (6-top table). The paintings around the restaurant were light and friendly with many depictions of harvesting agave surrounded by bright colors.
The menu is my first disappointment and unfortunately the main appeal for a restaurant. I love tortas, birria de res, tamales, etc. I didn’t see the Burris on the menu at first, the torta selection was a very basic sandwich variety representing a meat with chicken, steak, etc and guac or beans. I didn’t see tamales on the menu. Other oddities that don’t really add to the rating but caught my attention was the shift from papas to potato’s and back.
We ordered a variety of food to get a handle on the flavor, but we didn’t touch many of the categories for their offerings.
I ordered a breakfast burrito. The Bacon (egg and cheese) burrito is massive. It was easily 3 times what I could eat and it tasted great. My only complaint is I prefer my bacon a little crispy and this was pretty soft.
My daughter had the chicken quesadilla kids meal. She did not like it. This is a kid that
has almost never turned her nose at a chicken quesadilla. To make matters worse, it’s $4 to add chicken to the cheese quesadilla and we were neither told how much or that it was extra to get a chicken quesadilla. This probably could have been avoided with some extra diligence on our part, but the lack of warning was unfortunate. It came with a churro, it was OK, but not in the better half of churros I’ve had.
My wife ordered the Carne Asada Fries. When they arrived, it was rolled up tacos. When we told them, they told her that was what she ordered and left it at that. She did not enjoy them.
Overall I think I would have enjoyed it more if I realized I wasn’t expecting authentic Mexican (based on some other reviews). I’m not too picky on which region the menu comes from, but I do prefer actual Mexican over the Tex-Mex and Californian style Mexican.
Clean good environment finally mexican food amd very affordable!!!! Also great service!!!!!!!
