The salad bar is nothing out of the ordinary.
I decided against the Prime Rib which I was so looking forward to because of the condition on the dining area, I didn’t want to waste my money, although I did try the prime rib soup. I was thoroughly disappointed. It tasted like canned soup, with no prime rib in there.
My family did enjoy the waffle fries.
It could have been because of the recent water problem in Charleston, but instead of walking in and smelling fresh baked bread on steaks cooking on the grill, it smelled like the restrooms at state parks. Not appetizing at all.
We arrived there at about 9pm and there was no one to greet us at the hostess stand. We waited quite a bit and no one came, I eventually walked down the hallway to see if I could get anyone’s attention to be seated. While waiting there were plenty of wait staff who noticed people at the door but still ignored our presence. Finally when I did get someone they were very hesitant about sitting us. Not sure why. We were finally seated and it was FREEZING. Couldn’t really ask to be seated any where else due to ALL the tables In the area still covered with trash from previous guest. Eventually a table was cleaned off and we were able to move to a booth. It was still FREEZING and something was wrong with the booth seat- a uncomfortable dip in booth seats. Even while sitting there we were very displeased with the atmosphere and experience. Not sure if it was a long day but the waiters were all talking around us. Yelling across the room from one another using profanity; just too comfortable and very unprofessional.
We ordered the prime rib special with sweet potatoe and the salad bar. The romaine lettuce was brown and had to pick through it; which pickings were slim. The Ceasar salad was alright. I decided to make another salad with the iceberg lettuce which looked better but there was absolutely no shredded cheese on the salad bar. It was terrible that I couldn’t ask someone to bring it because it seemed like I was inconvencing them. The prime rib came out but no sweet potatoe. The prime rib was good but not great for it to be what they are know for. It was very fatty and overcooked. Asked for medium well and came out well. Soon as we cut into the steak you could hear how tough it was. Very displeasing but felt like it was close to closing time to ask for a better steak.
The waitress was great. She offered great customer service and was doing the best she could.
Overall we were highly disappointed and could have went out to Longhorn for a better $50 experience and food. Hate we work so hard to enjoy nice restaurants who can not seem to return the favor.
On our one night stay in Charleston, I decided to give a local restaurant a try rather than eat at the hotel. Unfortunately, this restaurant was one of those places where you should think twice about that first impression. Having to turn a cheap closet doorknob to open a door to a restaurant felt odd. It almost seemed like we came in a back entrance. The walk down two hallways, past empty dining areas, banquet rooms and a bar lead into a dining area that looked like it hasn’t been updated since the 70’s or 80’s. We probably should have turned around at that point.
My daughter and I ordered similar meals. One 12oz Ribeye ($21) and one 8oz Ribeye ($14) with mashed potatoes. The steaks were barely 3/4″ thick, and the fattiest cuts of meat I’ve eaten in a restaurant in years. The menu states “hand cut” steaks. I seriously doubt that possible for buffet quality cuts of beef. The mashed potatoes were institutional grade instant. Honestly, I’m not a food snob. But instant potatoes?? I prepare fresh, higher quality steak and potato meals for myself at home at half the price, and that’s without the meat on sale (Kroger or Publix).
All in all, this place is a serious candidate for Kitchen Nightmares. The owner has handcuffed the management and wait staff with second rate food and a severely dated eating environment at premium prices for an establishment in downtown Charleston. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone I consider a friend.
The only real problem this place has is that it’s in dire need of a facelift. Walking down that hall felt like walking through the employees-only sections of the restaurant — like I should be seeing bathrooms, offices, the kitchen, and back alley access to the dumpsters as I walked through them. Never mind the tiles were slick and my wife’s heels kept slipping on them. The overall design looks like Captain D’s circa 1990, minus the nautical theme, and feels graceless and cramped, while the lighting is too bright for a romantic atmosphere, but too dim to be welcoming. The over-loud and cringe-inducing 80s playlist at first felt like they were just playing whatever radio station they picked up, but once we realized it was stuck on that decade, we were thinking of clearing out early just to get away from it.
The place really needs to decide what it wants to be and remodel in that direction — pub, family restaurant, fine dining for dates, whatever. Just pick a focus and look good doing it.
All in all, the food was great, but the atmosphere had me afraid to order anything.
