It’s not likely for me to give out 5 stars. This restaurant deserves it.
I went in on a Saturday evening and everyone was friendly and inviting. I sat at the bar and even though I was on the phone he gave me space to finish my conversation.
I asked him what was good and he didn’t hesitate to ask was I hungry or just wanted a snack. He gave two options and I don’t remember the name of the one I picked. If I’m ever in NJ I’ll be back.

Casual dinner spot with good drinks and food. We tried the Smoldering and Green Goddess margaritas—both were excellent. The complimentary chips and salsa are a great start, and the table guac is worth adding.
It’s also very vegetarian-friendly, with plenty of options like Mexican street corn, vegan tacos, enchiladas, and burritos. Parking is easy and there’s lots of seating. It did get busy later in the evening, but we walked in at 6:45pm on a Saturday evening and were seated immediately with a party of seven.

Hate complaining. I’m grateful to get to go out for dinner in this economy. But I’m sorry this was not a good experience at all. There was a large hair in our pozole so we sent it back and they still charged us for it. I don’t blame the waitress for that but she was not happy we asked for that to be taken off our check. It only felt right since we didn’t eat it. Ordered the chicken enchiladas and I’m guessing they put no salt on it. On anything. On the rice, on the beans, on the chicken. I don’t love salty food but when I mean there was no salt in it there was no salt in it. Even asked other people to try my food to see if I was crazy. The pozole we did try with no hairs in it has cubed chicken that was very dry. But the broth contain seasoning and tasted good. The most flavorful thing was the green salsa with our chips. Our chips did have a sprinkle of salt thank god. It’s a Mexican restaurant and not a single Mexican song was played by any Mexican artist. It was all bachata which I love bachata but we are at a Mexican restaurant… Glad I didn’t waste my time on cocktails. I think the atmosphere is cute even if it was empty when we went. Good decor. Clean bathroom. This place has a lot of potential but please do better with your recipes. No more dried cubed chicken or hairs in pozole. Check for salt on your rice, on your beans, and enchiladas. Put more heart into the food. I know times are hard but you made me wish I ate at home tonight when I was so excited to have a nice dinner. Wish you the best xoxo

Restaurant is nice inside but the staff was not attentive and messed up our order. Food was sour and had barely any meat. Not recommended if you are in the mood for authentic Mexican food.

If I could give 0 starts I would. The server was so inattentive and aloof. We couldn’t get his attention when we needed something. We got the Mexican old fashioned which was not tasty so we iced it down. The food is disgusting and flavorless. We got the chicken taquitos which tasted like they were frozen. The queso that came with it was bland. and tasted like it was from a jar. For entrees we got the birria enchiladas and the roasted poblano enchiladas. Both were flavorless and tasted like they were premade. The Poblano enchiladas had so much cheese on them. The cheese wasn’t even melted because the layer was so thick. The server was not to be found so we couldn’t even flag him down to say the food was so awful. Save your time and money and go elsewhere

I had a good experience at the Rutgers location a few years ago, so I decided to try Fat Cactus in Parsippany—but it was a big mistake.
• The enchiladas had cinnamon powder and a lots on red ONIONS in them, which made them taste completely off.
• Lentil bean tacos were bland, and the salsa lacked any real flavor.
• Very limited vegetarian options, nothing stood out.
• Service was very slow, despite the place being nearly empty on a Thursday night.
Definitely not worth the visit. I won’t be coming back.

It was my husband and I’s first time at the Fat Cactus. Food was decent, nothing crazy but definitely good for a chill Saturday night at the bar. I felt compelled to leave a review because our bartender (who also acted as our server for the night) was amazing! Drinks were great and he was very personable and attentive. Would come back just to get service from Juan M. again!
