The restaurant has a queue where you order your meal and then wait for your number to be called. The screen asks you about a tip, so I did. There seemed to be no table service and we had to clean cleaning our table and bus it when we were done. Not sure if this is just what they do or because it was a weekend, but asking for a tip with no table service seems distasteful to me.
There are long family style tables where you can eat, with a few single tables along the wall. We choose one of the single tables. There did not appear to be anyone cleaning off the tables so we went and got some napkins and did it ourself. We were against the window and there were a lot of flies in the area. The ledge was very dusty and there were dead flies there as well. There were cobwebs and a dead spider hanging from the corner. We considered moving, but the long tables were full. I didn’t notice anyone wiping anything down any of the tables while we were there. Basically, it reminded me of eating in a mall food court where you’re on your own, which is fine with me if I know what to expect. The difference is, I have never tipped at the food court at the mall. As you can tell, the tipping part really bothered me.
When your number is called, you go to the front to pick up your food. It was packaged in individual sectioned plates and in a plastic bag, which is handy if you’re taking the food to go.
We tried multiple items so we could try a bit of everything. The eggs reminded us of diner eggs, where the eggs are cooked in bacon grease. They were ok. The bacon was not crispy, but it was thicker than normal, so it was ok as well. The hash browns casserole was the best I have ever tasted. The cheesy grits would have been as well, but the amount of salt that was put in them overwhelmed the cheese flavor. The chicken was standard country fried with not much flavor and the biscuit was hard and dry. I ate about half of it and will give the rest to my dog. It would have been better with gravy but much too dry without it.
A breakfast plate is between 12-14$, close to the cost of a cracker barrel breakfast. I have to say, with the exception of the hash brown casserole, I much prefer cracker barrel.
The food reminds me of a local diner in a small town. It was just ok. The cleanliness of the dining area was lacking. You will be prompted for a tip and your only contact with the staff is likely the cashier and the person who hands you the order and you will likely need to wipe down your table from the people who ate before you, (unless we just came on a bad day). Take your trash to the bins at the exit on your way out. I don’t see myself returning.
The selection of cakes and desserts was impressive. I’m told that they’re pretty famous for their desserts. Especially the cakes. The double chocolate nwas apparently excellent. My wife really enjoyed it. My dad had the 10 layers chocolate cake. He enjoyed it but said that it was a little dry. The chicken tenders were chicken tenders. Nothing special but not disappointing.
Farmer and the Dail is located outside Snow Hill, NC. It’s not particularly close to anything but not a bad trip from Goldsboro, Kinston or Greenville if you have a bit of time. I understand there is a place by the same owners in Greenville as well.
The place was pretty easy to find and had ample parking. The parking lot actually was pretty huge so I imagine it gets pretty busy there.
At the side of the building is a field of sunflowers, which are my wife’s favorite. There were a handful of customers taking pictures in them. I suspect they were planted for that reason.
Walking inside, Farmer and the Dail was colorful bright and clean. The employees were super friendly and the food didn’t take very long to arrive after ordering.
The food was tasty. The strawberry lemonades were a bit too heavy on the sweet syrup they use.
They have a large assortment of treats and desserts to choose from afterwards. I was full but the wife did order a piece of cake and drink to go.
All said, we enjoyed our meal and were happy with the experience.
