We ate out back….beautiful patio area. My wife referenced it as the ‘secret garden’. My Berlin Burger was excellent. Good pumpkin beer.

Smithtown’s restaurant scene can feel like a revolving door sometimes with so many ownership and name changes.

So when a long-standing restaurant is still bringing their A-game with the same owners, a happy, engaged staff and the same great vibe year after year, it’s something special in this village.

With more than 20 years in the same place, Faraday’s slogan says it all, “…when you just want good food.” They’re being modest. There’s much more to this local gem than good food, and it reveals itself in stages.

Walk in from Main Street, and you might be underwhelmed. Pretty much like any neighborhood bar/restaurant. Well-stocked bar with plenty of beer, wine and hard stuff to choose from, the friendly barkeep, a few tables near the bar and a pleasant dining room further back.

And if you stop there, you’ve missed the best part – a hidden courtyard with outdoor tables and an enclosed “greenhouse” filling the narrow space between Faraday’s and a dance studio.

From the municipal lot behind the restaurant, you walk down a charming boardwalk into the courtyard. It may be a bit corny, but you don’t feel like you’re in Smithtown at that moment. Only a few restaurants in Smithtown have outdoor dining, and Faraday’s greenhouse has climate control to serve guests all summer long and well into the cold season – completely secluded from Main Street.

And then there’s the food. Their slogan says “good” but I beg to differ. The menu has much more than you might expect for a local bar/restaurant, and to my surprise, the food is really outstanding. Regular choices, sprinkled with some creative versions of typical offerings. Burgers, paninis and sandwiches, pot pie, shepherd’s pie, all the way up to steaks, seafood and chicken entrees. Lots of soup and salad options, and tons of appetizer choices.

You might say my favorite dish is a bit unexpected. For all of their red meat, poultry and seafood selections, their Southwest BBQ Chicken Salad ($18) is absolutely epic. There’s so much going on, it takes 24 words to describe it on the menu. Fresh fried chicken, drizzled with BBQ sauce and served with ranch dressing on the side, garnished with corn, tomatoes, beans, tortilla chips and fried onion straws. It’s a huge portion and my absolute favorite for lunch or dinnertime (with enough for leftovers.)

My wife tried the Oktoberfest prix fixe menu ($33) and absolutely loved her goulash. Tender beef, perfectly cooked noodles and a unique reddish sauce with peppers and other vegetables that gave the whole dish a special look and taste. It came with a nice house salad with fresh croutons and a choice of several appetizers (she had the baked clams.)

The bread basket came with several piping hot slices of Italian-style bread – fresh, with a crunchy crust. My unsweetened iced tea tasted fresh-brewed and was delicious.

Faraday’s knows what works for their clientele, they offer a remarkable range of selections and cook it superbly, at a fair price. The most expensive item on the dinner menu is the Bleu Bonnet – shell steak and shrimp scampi in one dish, for just $35. Everything else is in line with the local competition’s prices.

Check out all the menus on their website.

The service is just great – friendly, knowledgeable servers, easy smiles and the right attitude to be working at a local restaurant and bar. When my wife and I left, we heard no fewer than five “thanks for coming” farewells from the staff.

With so many choices in Smithtown, Faradays’ still checks so many boxes for my family and friends. Great food, a unique outdoor dining setting, awesome service and fair prices. What more can you ask for?

very much enjoyed the food and atmosphere, had a reservation, a bit busy getting in, Only thing uncomfortable with, is after order drinks , a gentleman owner? seemingly under pressure , abruptly said. “Did you guys have a reservation”?…. i said yes, we sure did. almost ready to give our table to someone else and guess put us outside…(like i might have) very uncomfortable and unprofessional…not to mention would have been his staffs mistake. but. we had reservation …not even a sorry or ? oh well guess a bad day. the food was great and we enjoyed. recommend to others and recommend for him to think next time. As i’m sure he enjoys returning customers ….. no regrets and still tipped well ;^)

I had lunch with my sister, brother and my two youngest kids, 11 and 14. Our server, Heather, was fantastic. The food was really tasty, I can’t recall what everyone had bc we ate there a month ago but I wanted to write about my visit bc our server was just amazing. My daughter left her a message on a napkin. They are dog friendly too!

They seem understaffed… we arrived through the back on a Friday afternoon and waited for service near the fake grass area. We thought someone was going to come greet us but no one came. We only found out that you could go into the restaurant through a door by following another group in. Some signage might be helpful for newcomers on where to enter!

Inside was way too dark so we sat outside on the fake grass. It’s a nice place but there were BEES EVERYWHERE! Beewhere!

We ordered the fried calamari (was eh), Long Island Underground (not what I expected – more patty than pulled pork), Bistro Burger, Berlin Burger, and Marinated Steak and Mushroom Melt. All the burgers felt like the meat patty itself was overworked which made the meat too dense. It also tasted bland…

First time at this restaurant and will definitely return. Loved the outdoor patio. Enjoyed the pre-fix 3 course dinner with a glass of wine [$21.95 – best deal around]. Saylor, our server, was friendly and knowledgeable. Loved that they had a bottle of sanitizer on every table.

Stopped in today on this raining afternoon for lunch and holiday cheer. What a gem! Sat at the bar had lunch specials the food was excellent. Really enjoyed the lobster quesadilla and chicken club along with my specialty holiday cocktail. Staff so friendly and fast. Atmosphere of others made us feel as though we were long time friends. Would definitely recommend!

Unfortunately, I had a very disappointing experience at Faraday’s. As someone with a severe food allergy, I of course always know there is the risk of cross contamination when eating out at any restaurant. Therefore, I always ensure that I address my allergy and double check with wait staff about food items that may be prepared with or near my allergen (especially if I see that my allergen is served at the restaurant which it is indeed at Faraday’s). No issue with placing my order and communicated allergen with my server who made note of it. Upon receiving my food, myself and the party I was with were concerned that something containing my allergen was accidentally served with my dish. After getting my server’s attention to double check, not only did they laugh at me for asking, they made me feel like I was inconveniencing them for asking such a question. This same person also proceeded to ignore my party for the remainder of our time there and only came to deliver the check after we flagged them down. I am so disappointed in the way I was treated, I felt incredibly embarrassed. In no way was I being accusatory, I just wanted to be safe and ensure that I wasn’t about to accidentally eat something that would send me into anaphylaxis I am not one to feel inclined to leave negative reviews, but this treatment is simply not acceptable. To me, it does not seem that all the staff at Faraday’s take food allergies seriously — so be forewarned if you are someone that must be mindful of what you eat due to an allergy!!!
