Evangelo’s Bar in Santa Fe: a historic institution – Facebook

Another fun Evangelos memory: in the late 80s one Fiesta night Jon Bowman and I ducked in there for some drinks. It was packed, of course.

Went to Evangelo’s in Santa Fe for live music and what started as a fun evening turned into one of the rudest bar experiences I’ve ever had.

The place being cash-only was already inconvenient, but we overlooked it because we were enjoying the music. Later we went downstairs to the small bar and ordered beers. We briefly ordered two shots but changed our minds about a minute later and politely told the bartender Jonah we’d just stick with our beers.

Instead of acting like a professional, he snapped at us and said, “You’re wasting my time, just leave.” Completely uncalled for. We were confused and even offered him a $20 tip to smooth things over, which he refused while continuing to tell us to leave.

When we asked the bartenders for their names, they refused and got even more disrespectful. They ended up having a “security guard” walk us out while we were simply trying to finish the beers we had just been served.

All of this happened because we decided to be responsible and not take shots. If that’s how customers are treated for changing their mind about a drink order, it says a lot about the level of professionalism here.

Very disappointing experience and definitely not a place I’d recommend.

We were in Santa Fe during the off-season Santa Fe doesn’t have great nightlife anytime, and during the off season is worse. But we happen to stumble on Evangelo’s weekly blues jam and we were not disappointed. We had a spectacular evening of great music and fun dancing. Almost entirely locals as far as we could tell and they were friendly enough and allowed us to enjoy ourselves to the hilt.

This was a great experience and we only saw half the bar. The owner Nick was bartending and was a great guy. Great upbeat vibe in a cozy setting. The history behind the bar is a great story as well. The beer selection was great. This is a must stop for anyone in the area. Also being right next to the Lensic you just might find the artist you just saw on stage having an after show beverage.

Awesome bar with music almost every night and really liked getting to know Nick (owner/bartender) this week counting tonight, our last night , we spent 4 nights at Evangelo’s on our week long trip – Nick said we were becoming regulars! Al Especially liked going to listen to all the music – Tuesday nights are jam sessions so cool to hear from a variety of musicians
One Love with Jake the Snake as lead gutarist, Greg on bass and Kevin standing in for Scott on drums was awesome – I think Scott will be with them tonight when we go back
Highly recommend, just bring cash as is cash only bar (there is a pool bar in the basement as well that is cool)
Nick used to be a competitive soccer player and his Dad was a decorated WWII veteran ❤️

This bar is just off the chain!!! It has everything u want and need.
Live band for the older crowd upstairs and hip hop downstairs with pool tables for the younger crowd. So if you’re anything like myself mid age and just love both scenes u can have fun all night going up n down

Came by initially for the ATM, decide to stay for some drinks and live music. Holy crap what a cold shoulder and whatever attitude. Thank you for you family’s service to our country in WWII, but don’t treat customers like intruders. Plus, I know its the Santa Fe plaza area but your prices are stupid high. Recommended Desert Dog or other dive bars.

Was highly recommended the spot by a local goal. Such an awkward experience. Show up an little early I guess and got screamed at for going near the pool tables. The locals at the bar laughed at us for the mistake. Super super super awkward and would never recommend this to anyone in town and would highly recommend going to Desert dogs to play pool. They were so welcoming and kind there compared to this establishment.
