I timed this perfect. It was near empty so I had a great table and view. The location is awesome. The food was great and i saved room for dessert. Not the place your coming to pound beers with college buddies but if you like classic German food this is where you should come.

A Madison Classic! Essen Haus is an established spot for the whole family with German comfort food classics (Get the Sauerbraten! Schnitzel! SPATZEL!), good service, and with a vast selection of imported brews on tap. All reasonably priced, too.

While we miss the days 20 years ago when as a students we would share a boot while listening to the the live polka band on the weekends, Essen Haus still manages to hold a rare charm that draws us back time and again!

Had a family dinner here, 6 adults. Since it was a birthday dinner, we were told the birthday person could get either a free shirt or dessert.
The waitress was very polite and answered any questions we had. She was knowledgeable about the beers on tap.
The bar area had a few customers, but the seating area was empty.
Food came out great, and large portions. We had plenty to take home for later.
I will definitely be going back!

Amazing authentic German cuisine. Reuben was possibly the best I’ve ever had- and I am a Reuben fanatic. Excellent selection of German beers- great vibes and fun place!

This is a really cool place. I got some pork schnitzel which was really good. The beer was really good and well priced. The atmosphere was really fun. Everyone seemed to be having a good time. There was a live polka band which was cool but they were a little loud.

We had a wonderful time eating and shopping here. We are from the buffet and everything was delicious. Our service was very good. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere, we sat at a table that was inside of a hotel and buggy. There is a bakery with lots of choices of foods to take home. The gift shop has lots of lovely items, stationary, jewelry, art Knick-knacks, children’s toys, home decor and kitchen items.

The atmosphere is something you won’t find anywhere else. The beer is amazing and the fries are perfection.

However… the rest of the food was just ok. This sausage platter was overpriced at around $25. The sausages were not as good as they should have been. The sour kraut was just not good and I typically love it. I also had cheese curds and a pretzel with the table. The food is solid, not great. But you don’t go here for the food, you go for the experience. And that is unbeatable.
