The Original Sheepherder Bread® 1938 was introduced to the Owens Valley during the California Gold Rush by immigrant Basque sheepherders who missed the bread of their homeland. They shaped loaves of their traditional bread by hand, used stone ovens for baking, and produced the first sheepherder bread. Even today we shape the loaves by hand and bake in the finest European Stone Hearth Ovens. The Original Sheepherder Bread® 1938, as well as all other delicious products, are made of only the purest ingredients: Well water from the Sierras, stone ground unbleached flour, and never any chemicals. Just like our bread, our pastries are made with only the finest ingredients. Real butter, grade AA eggs, unbleached flour, cane sugar…….
European-style bakery & deli offering sweets, specialty breads & sandwiches in a quaint setting.

We stopped here while in Bishop for the beautiful fall colors with the family. My eyes went wide at the sheer number of breads, sandwiches, pastries, and desserts—all right up my alley! Not only was the display fully stocked, but fresh loaves were constantly coming out, which was incredible to see. Yes, it was crowded and busy, but the amazing quality of the baked goods made the wait entirely worth it.
Both the bread and the sandwiches were incredibly fresh and delicious. I highly recommend the Egg Sandwich.
I also strongly recommend the Clam Chowder! Unlike many other places where it is overly salty, this chowder was perfect. Just imagine the fresh bread dipped into that chowder—I want another bowl!
We overheard other customers say they had driven all the way from San Diego and that they had visited last week and again this week! That should give you an idea of just how good this place is.
Highly recommended for anyone who loves great bread and sandwiches.
P.S. The Bible verse at the entrance was very memorable: “Man shall not live by bread alone…”

Great bakery and great service. I’ve never seen this place not busy and there is a reason. It’s dang good food! Don’t be discouraged by the lines, it moves fast. It would be wrong to visit or drive through Bishop without getting a treat from this establishment.

Erick Schat’s Bakkerÿ in Bishop is an absolute delight. The place is somewhat of a museum for food – but everything, of course, is fresh. Baked goodies are everywhere and you will find something here for everyone. The deli offers up great sandwich options. My first time in I went with their Carved Roast Turkey Sandwich on the trademarked Sheepherder Bread, with all the fixings. Delicious! On my way out I loaded up on a variety of cookies and other deserts. One thing you will not find here is disappointment. Highly recommended.

Erick Schat’s Bakery in Bishop, California.
It is huge, with an incredible variety of breads, and people line up to get in!
I had the beef sandwich, and the bread was delicious while the filling was generous. I also bought a few of their signature walnut-raisin baguettes and a few bottles of balsamic vinegar. The vinegar wasn’t quite to my taste, but the bread was absolutely fantastic!

Still one of two reasons we keep coming back to Bishop every year! The breads and the sandwiches are just amazingly good! Today I tried a new sandwich, the BBQ Turkey, which is like a pulled pork sandwich. It was amazingly good! So tasty and filling. I highly recommend! Service is fast and friendly as usual.

This was a very busy stop on the way to Mammoth, and we had heard a lot about it. Overall it was an interesting place, though I’m not sure we would return based on the food alone. The food didn’t taste particularly fresh, and was very, very sweet.
It was a huge establishment, with tons of people and a massive selection of items – it felt closer to a large grocery store than a bakery.
Not a bad experience, but overall didn’t quite do it for us.

This is by far the greatest bakery I have ever been to. This is my second time going and it is a pleasure every time I get the opportunity to stop. In a great little town with beautiful views Erick Schat’s Bakkerÿ truly is the gem. The vibes are immaculate and the building is beautiful. The baked goods are consistently fresh and perfectly prepared. There are so many options, a person could get lost exploring all the different aisles and their creative loafs.
If you’re looking for a pastry, I can’t recommend highly enough the cheese puff and the California danish. However, you really can’t go wrong with anything you choose. This bakery is worth traveling for.

Love stopping by this place every time I go to Bishop. There is always a line to get a sandwich already in their baked goods and that’s because it’s well worth it. I got a roast beef sandwich while my wife got a BLT with avocado. Of course, the next time I go through Bishop, I’ll stop again.

We came here because it was the only open place on thanksgiving day (until 2) but did not disappoint! We tried their roast beef sandwiches. We also tried some pastries but those were meh. However they gave us a cookie with our order!

I ordered a basic coffee, a BLT sandwich, clam chowder soup, and several bakeries, and everything was delicious! The cafe’s unique, historical design is also very attractive. The only major drawback is the outdoor seating—there’s no shade, so the sun absolutely bakes you, your food, and your coffee.
