Superb. Always wanted to visit and I will be coming back. Delicious starters, fresh fish and seafood, fantastic wine list and impeccable service. We had smoked trout with peanuts and venison spring rolls with raspberry sauce for starters and the hot platter has everything from seafood to fish, with sides of tartare sauce and garlic butter. It’s refreshing to have proper napkins and table cloths and the restaurant is perfectly lit. Fantastic service from Ashley, polite and smiley with great knowledge of the menu. Thank you for making my sister’s birthday very special.

I had the most amazing birthday dinner at English’s. Service of 11/10! Everyone were so kind and attentive, food is so delicious here. I absolutely loved their cooked oysters. And will definitely come back for more. I had a medium rare dry aged sirloin and it was so delicious and tender not rubbery at all. And the birthday dessert plates were so cute! The décor of the restaurant strikes a perfect balance between elegance and warmth, with cozy tables with crisp white linens, pretty flowers, and a chandelier that makes the whole place glow. It feels classic but super inviting, like the perfect mix of fancy and comfortable.

We visited this lovely restaurant yesterday evening for our one year wedding anniversary, which was an absolute treat because it was one of the best restaurants we have ever been to!

The service was great. The food was so delicious and we loved the whole experience of the evening and we will definitely be returning next time we go to Brighton. thank you so much for the team for a lovely evening!

The service was great and the environment was nice. We ordered the “ cold platter ” for two ( £52 per person), but the prawn wasn’t very fresh. Overall, still a pleasant experience.

Tucked away in The Lanes and within sight of the sea, English’s feels like the definition of Brighton on a plate.

The restaurant occupies what were once fishermen’s cottages, dating back well over 400 years.

Inside, crisp white linen and small roses on the tables bring a quiet elegance, while art deco artwork adds just the right amount of glamour.

The menu balances tradition with a modern touch, and it shows in every dish. I had the mussels and fries alongside a few oysters. Simple, fresh, and done beautifully.

What stood out even more was the service. Ashley made dining solo feel effortless, with just the right mix of attentiveness and warmth.

For anyone craving seafood with character and history behind it, this spot is a gem.

A lovely spot for very classical seafood. The outside seating in the summer is excellent for people watching.
The food was fresh, with simple flavours that let the quality shine.

Our server Hannah struck the perfect balance of both friendly and professional. We will definitely be back!

Came to Brighton for a day trip. Was recommended this restaurant by a family member who had been before.
Nice cosy old-school vibes.
It was a sunny, warm summers day, so we sat outside.
There was a range of dishes, but we went for the £27 for 2 course summer set menu, as it seemed a good value for money.
I ordered raw rock oysters as starter. Got 3 fresh oysters which were fresh and juicy. Came nice and cold, with the mignonette and ponzu dressing. Delicious!
Another person on the table ordered salt and pepper calamari and even though portion was small, with 3 large pieces of calamari, the taste was amazing and it was so fresh.
The fish and chips were crispy and fish was flaky. Though again, could do with a few more chips. Tartare sauce was great!
The mussels marinieres was exceptional. The sauce was extra creamy and goes well with chips.
For the price of the set menu, its great value for money!
Would highly recommend!
There was bread that came to the table with delicious mackerel pate. But you will need to pay for a cover charge for this.
Drinks menu was extensive.
Staff were very friendly.
Highly recommend.
Women’s toilet was up some narrow stairs at the top of the building.

Haven’t been here for 30 years but after reading some recent reviews decided to go with a couple of friends. Didn’t regret it. We were served by a delightful Canadian waitress who was attentive without being intrusive. We had rock oysters to start which were excellent I can recommend the vodka shot too. I fancied fish and chips as I think if a restaurant can get that right it’s going to be good. Haddock and chips with tartare sauce and mushy peas were excellent. On a par with the best I’ve ever tasted. My friends had several starters instead of a main. Prawn croquettes, scallops, prawns and calamari. All excellent. It won’t be 30 years before I go back. The other thing worth mentioning is that it’s one of the few restaurants where you can hear what your friends are saying and you can’t hear what other tables are talking about. It’s also well lit. First class.
