The menu leans pan-Asian with a big focus on sushi, small plates, and shareable dishes. There’s a lot of variety, so it’s easy to order a mix of things for the table. The sushi is fresh and nicely presented, and the specialty rolls feel creative without being overcomplicated. The hot dishes are flavorful and come out well-timed, which makes sharing easy and enjoyable. We enjoyed the peking duck, which was flavorful and similar to other high quality peking duck we’ve had in the past. The mapo tofu was also good, though not as numbing as we would’ve liked.
Service is generally attentive and professional, and the staff does a good job handling larger tables and busy nights. Overall, Empire is a solid Seaport go-to if you’re looking for Asian food, cool ambiance, and a fun night out.
Came here for the $25 Unlimited Sushi Wednesday special. The menu was already a pain to get through as they provided neither a paper copy nor QR code. You had to look it up online yourself which there was no direct tab to get to it.
The actual sushi was so low quality. Whether drenched in spicy mayo or topped with a cold slimy red onion concoction, I was disappointed with each roll after the other. Of the ones I had, Spicy Tuna and ‘Rock Roll’ were the ones that were at least slightly good, but nothing better than what you can get at any other sushi restaurant in Boston. The Hamachi Tartare Roll and both the Crab and Spicy Salmon ‘Rice Bites’ were especially bad. Just a mess of texture, flavor, and presentation. The only thing I would come back for were the complimentary wonton chips.
The subpar food, coupled with the unfriendly waitress I had, made for an extremely unpleasant experience. Would not recommend this place despite how good of a deal the $25 unlimited sushi sounds.
We had a reservation for 8:45. when we got there, we had to wait 20 mins, and the entire time we were checking in with the hostess, she said they were “preparing the table” and that we “needed to be patient”. I’m not so sure we were any different from a walk-in to them. When they finally seated us, they asked us if we wanted tap water, bottled water, or sparkling water. You’re telling me a $100+ restaurant doesn’t have a water filter? We ordered the sparkling water which ended up being an extra $14. When we told our waitress we were trying the $25 deal, she handed us a tiny hand-sized card that had a few sushi rolls and appetizer-esque items on it, and continued to inform us that we would only be allowed to order 2 items per person at a time. The problem with this, is that each plate not only took a while to come out, but they were extremely small portions; even with them cramming as much of the order as they could onto one plate. The waitress herself wasn’t even very attentive, so we would have to wait just to order as well.
After just the first round that we ordered, it’s 9:45 and the waitress informs us that it’s last call, since the kitchen closes at 10:00. Um, do you see how kinda scammy that is?- We weren’t seated for 20 mins after our reservation time, and weren’t tended to in a timely fashion, nor were we able to order a portion that would keep us satisfied within our given time.
Outside of feeling a bit ignored by our waitress, the staff themselves were also very dismissive- Our table’s soy sauce was out when we arrived, and when we asked a staff member to refill it, she seemed to get frustrated with the request and stormed off. I will say it was busy in there, so I can understand feeling overwhelmed and like you’re trying to juggle a lot in an environment like that. It just wasn’t an encouraging feeling to not be treated with courtesy once during our time here. When she came back with the soy sauce, she slammed the dish on the table as though she had more pressing matters to attend to, and ignored my “thank you!”.
The food itself seemed like it lacked a lot of care- The crispy rice was stale and cold; the yellowtail roll was some strange slimy combination of red onions that really felt like a concoction bust; the salmon crispy rice was strangely very salty, etc.
The restaurant itself was very pretty and well-designed. I really liked the atmosphere/overall vibe of the place. It also wasn’t too loud, which was nice. Everything else, however, was a disappointment. It really felt like if you came for the $25, you were a nuisance to the restaurant. Unfortunately, we definitely won’t be going back.
Outstanding experience with Empire Boston. From start to finish, everything was handled professionally and efficiently. The team was knowledgeable, responsive, and genuinely cared about delivering top-quality service. You can tell they take pride in their work. Highly recommend Empire Boston to anyone looking for reliability and excellence.
Got here at 11:00’got seated right away. Perfect great start.
Been seated for 20 min, someone comes by I think it’s finally waiter no it’s the busser. Ok cool finally we can get a water after 20 minutes.
Been seated for 30 min now what seems manager comes over and asks if I’m all set seeing I only have a water. I said no, no one has came by.
She says sorry let me go yell at someone finally get someone because i genuinely said I’ll just pay for the water and get out of here. Stayed because felt bad.
Finally get to order because I had 30 minutes to stare at a menu.
Ordered scallion pancakes 10/10
Nigiri was baby yellowtail and red coral shrimp.
Also got Junmai sake to go with Nigiri
Got pancakes and I think yellowtail but no sake. Been eating the pancakes for 10 minutes now waiting for the Sale to start eating the nigiri but still nothing.
Was going to order more but this is all I think I’ll be getting due to service. 1/10 because pancakes were great. Used to be a 10/10 back a couple years ago don’t know what happened since then.
Ok so now after 18 minutes got my Sake, he came over with it and let me know kitchen is closing if I want anything else. I asked if I was ever getting my Red Coral Shrimp Nigiri and he said I never ordered it. (He probably just forgot). Oh silly him.
So now can finally eat my first half of my nigiri after 18 minutes but gotta wait more now to eat the shrimp. GOTTA MAKE SURE I DONT DRINK ALL MY SAKE NOW.
7/10 Baby Yellowtail
10 minutes now and nothing on the shrimp
He came by to grab plates asked how shrimp was… haven’t gotten it yet my guy at this point damn I should’ve left.
Wait there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. My Shimo finally came after 15 extra minutes pheww .
6/10 Red Coral Shrimp pretty mid
Yes I may have gotten here 1 hour before kitchens closed but waiting 30 minutes to ask for your order and for it to be half wrong after an extra 15 more minutes doesn’t really help either.
Edit/Update: After reading reviews guess people had a great Experience with Ivan. I actually had Ivan now looking at the receipt. Guess your treated differently here if you come by yourself cause they might think “your not running up a big tab so no big tip.” I mean I would’ve if I had the opportunity to run up the tab. I wanted to get a bunch more food
Menu has a wide selection for all taste buds including the drinks and desert selection. Sushi with lobster , shrimp etc, vegetables noodles ,baked Alaska were some of my favorites .
We had a late booking, but everyone attended our table withbsame enthusiasm.
I just think the prices are extremely high for the small portions, and the dishes could be a bit more flavorful
I’m a junior sous chef at a restaurant in Newburyport, so I know what I’m talking about
It’s a beautiful restaurant with a good vibe and gorgeous sushi, I just think it’s too expensive
Apart from the food, the interior is elegant with some modern touches. The wait staff were very kind and even offered our table more gobo to try on the side. Food came out quite quick for the amount of sushi we ordered too. I’d come back at least one more time.
