I wanted something so delicious to eat on my lunch break and I was highly disappointed. Ms. Ellen was sooo sweet and caring and the shop is absolutely beautiful, but the food was just not for me personally. I like my ribs more meaty and seasoned with some trauma, char, something to them. The yams were good. The Mac and cheese was cheesy, but needed more flavoring. My heart was broken when she allowed me to try to apple pie and it was served cold on aluminum foil. This to me gave the impression it was hot, but now has to be removed to heat it quickly in the microwave or wait for the oven. In 2025 the average cost of a meal is $20-25 and I just didn’t want this disappointing feeling.

Very small but cozy place. I was greeted by great smelling cooking from the kitchen. I then was greeted with a welcoming smile and as I explained that it’s my first time, I was asked what I was craving for to which I replied “fish!” I was immediately recommended the catfish – which I used to eat when I was growing up in the Philippines. I could get 2 fillet meal for $14.99 or 1 fillet meal for $13.99 – that extra dollar for another fillet was too hard to pass up!
There were many choices for 2 sides that came with the meal but I picked collards and potato salad. The other choices were Cole slaw, rice, cabbage…
I say on the line chair while waiting for my meal to be prepared. Had to be takeout as there aren’t chairs or tables. I was able to admire the unique art pieces and display: including a mirror with colorful plastic utensils as backdrop
for the mirror.
I got to taste my meal and it was delicious and heart warming – a hug for my tummy: the catfish fillets were perfectly seasoned and not burnt or oily. Collard greens were cooked perfectly and the potato salad was hearty.
Can’t wait to try the other fish meals. Highly recommend this place!

People always say Black Businesses don’t get the support from their community
Well the problem is the Black Business forget they a business and need more than just your regular customers to keep your going. I’m not from the area but said let me take a chance and find some soul food . I googled and Ellen “s and another Establishment came up.
I wanted Pig Feet specifically.I called Ellen’s on 12/26/2025 no answer but the website said they were open I drove 25 mins and they weren’t open. I called the other restaurant they didn’t have pig feet but their food look tasty so I drove there while there I asked if they knew of anywhere I could get some pig feet, she suggested Ellen’s I never mentioned to her about me going there and they weren’t open closed. Ok Saturday afternoon before 1:00pm I called Ellen’s again because I wanted some pig feet. An older lady answer I’m not sure if it was Ellen or not but it was her or a manger. I asked did they have pig feet she said yes I only have enough for three dinners and she don’t know how long it will last. I said I’m about 15mins away can I place an order she said we don’t do call ins, I said ok I’m not going to take that chance again I drove there yesterday and called and yall wasn’t open after the website said yall were she said that’s googling don’t control that excuse me mama you do control what google puts on there about your business she must think I’m green and don’t know I’m a business owner myself she said they were closed for the holidays understandable but at least say Holiday Hours may vary. Anf ive I’ve I told you I came all they way there yesterday and you were closed and I was giving you another chance today why not say well we don’t normally take call in orders and because I’m low on what you want I will do this for you but you have to pay for it. That’s showing appreciation for someone trying to give you their money and business . I come to the area a lot in the summer now you won’t have to worry about me even trying you again

I wanted to surprise my family with a home cooked meal. I live in Dallas and wasn’t familiar with the restaurants in Virginia Beach. Someone told me to try Ellen’s. I ordered their turkey wings and pork chops with macaroni and cheese, greens/green beans. My brother and 2 sisters loved their dinners! They said they couldn’t believe the large portions and how delicious the food was! I am going to Ellen’s as one of my “go to “ restaurants in the future.

When I called yesterday before 5pm she was very friendly and seemed happy to hear my voice it seemed like we knew each other by phone and she placed my order when I arrived it was hot and the dinner was awesome I’ve been wanting pigfeet since another soulfood place shut down without any notice, but Ellen’s was the BOMB!! tastey and the greens were seasoned just like I like yams were smooth to coleslaw just right and when paying we chatted more of where each other were from it was nice seeing happy faces and no rushing and I said I will be back again. Somethings are worth the drive I say. Thanks Ellen staff.

Everytime I tell myself to support a black business I get disappointed. The lady taking the order was just snappy and had an attitude. I wanted to walk away but in my head I told myself “maybe she’s having a bad day” (no excuse of course). I ordered chopped bbq large for my son and large catfish w/greens and mac&cheese for myself. The one roll that was in there was partially opened so had to throw that out. there was a paper towel in my food I’m assuming to soak up the grease from the fish but come on. The paper towel was all wet and soggy over the greens and mac&cheese. My son only received a small thing of bbq sauce for his bbq. But overall the food was ok. Just the service experience turned me off.

Ellen was an absolute pleasure to meet at her shop! She was so extremely kind to her customers, whether it was your first time there or she remembers you from before. The food was well priced, massive portions, the chicken was just falling right off the bone, and everything was so delicious! Unfortunately there are no tables or chairs so this is a takeout-only spot.

I was staying across the street at the Founders Inn and walked across the street for a quick bite to eat. Very friendly service and the food was delicious! You can tell that the owner really cares about the business and serving people. When I was there, there were a bunch of regular customers that she seemed to know well and really loved her.

First of all I literally came here for the Mac and that’s not Mac and cheese at all that macaroni noodles and some type of watered down cheese sauce . The chicken was ok could’ve used more seasoning and the yams are alright . For the price I paid I’m not satisfied at all . Actually quite disappointed in this . AND THERE ARE LITERALLY ROTTEN PIECES OF POTATOES IN MY POTATO SALAD . I know you wouldn’t feed that to your family smh just read in the reviews they don’t give refunds so I’m not going to waste my time even trying . Sad
