This used to be a good place to get a decent meal at a great price. Today, the prices are considerably higher, but the quality of the food seems to be generally consistent with how it has always been. The cost this time was about $100 including the tip for our group of four.
On this visit, the crab quesadillas were so-so, although there was quite a bit of shell in the crab. The guacamole was slightly brown on top, as if it had been sitting in the refrigerator since the morning or previous day. The beer selection includes some pretty basic Mexican and American lagers, while they also offer margaritas and other mixed drinks.
The atmosphere in this place is a bit crowded and the decor could use some updates. However, laid back is usually okay when this close to the beach. A few TVs have been added to the bar and dining area over the years.
The service provided by our waiter during this visit was excellent. If you like a lot of flavor, try the house habanero sauce. It’s very spicy and quite tasty.

Don’t let the exterior of this restaurant fool you! Wonderful atmosphere, very pleasant waitstaff, excellent food and extremely reasonable price! Would definitely visit again!

We lived in the EI area for 10 years and have visited twice a year for the past 12 years and we always enjoy El Zarape. This evening, our experience was entirely different than any other visit we have had. First, our waiter was inexperienced and seemed to have no one helping him. He worked very hard and we thought he did a great job for being in such a tough situation. Sadly, no one taught him how to run the cash register. When he tried to check us out, had some difficulty and asked for help, the young man running the bar (lightning bolt shaved into the side of his head – make sure to avoid this fellow) attempted to help, accused us of “not paying attention” when he grabbed another family’s bill and then tried to charge us three times the amount of our bill. He then said “he was not dealing with this” and stormed back to the bar where he promptly stood and watched television while eating a snack! The manager, after multiple attempts, finally handed us a bill to sign that had an incorrect amount but assured us our card would be charged for the correct amount. It was an absolute disaster with absolutely no one in charge and no apologies for the 30 minutes it took to pay an incorrect bill or for the unprofessional and disrespectful behavior of the bartender. We understand times are tough, everyone is understaffed, and hours are long. We have all been there. We never complained about our wait or the attempt to charge us for other family’s bills. But no one should be allowed to work in a service profession and treat others in this way. This restaurant has definitely lost our business. Based on the half-full parking lot and the lady behind us who waited 40 minutes for a take-out order, then had to leave without food because she was going back to work, I suspect our experience is not an unusual one.

I went to a restaurant before coming here.. the wait was an hour so I decided to go elsewhere .. I found this gem. The absolute best Mexican food I’ve eaten in North Carolina. (I’m from California and have lived in Texas so that should say a lot.) oh and our server, Armando Was amazing with his hospitality and generously handed us authentic salsa to enjoy with our chips and meal. I recommend this place 5 stars. Definitely coming back.

Service was super slow. I had to go to the bar to get my water refilled. We were a party of 3 and all 3 plates came out about 10 minutes apart. When the first plate came out we were told they were out of one the plates we ordered. The food itself was fine. Not great but edible. I’m sure they were probably short staffed but the place wasn’t exactly packed. I wouldn’t go back.

Meal, service and add on charges left me disappointed. Ordered special shrimp tacos. Got two in soft shell. No pico as on menu. Service was slow even though place was half empty. Only offered booth in bar, not dining room. Bill included “convenience” charge.
Been there many times in previous years, but won’t be going back in the future. Convenience charge was the tipping point.

My daughters and I enjoyed our lunch as newcomer’s to the area from Colorado. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The food is really yummy and good portion sizes! The best Mexican we have experienced so far in Eastern NC. The margaritas are delicious and huge. We will be back!
