El Viejon is a good choice for an upscale Mexican and seafood restaurant in the Mira Mesa area, however I am not itching to return right away.
The items we have ordered have on the whole been good, with my personal standouts being the tacos (favorites: smoked tuna, pork belly) and Pulpo a la Brasas. On the whole the food tasted good, was presented nicely, and seemed to be made with quality ingredients, however everything was on the pricy end. Included sides like cilantro and onions were plentiful, but they are pretty stingy when it comes to tortilla chips (and yes, chips cost extra). When it comes to service, it can be spotty with servers often passing you by and forgetting tableware/water, and after asking for them, salsas were not given the first time I dined in. Parking is plentiful, but can get very busy at lunch time and with only one exit/entryway. Overall we enjoyed our meals and, with some caveats, left satisfied.

Some specific notes:
We had come in during brunch time and the whole fried fish was no longer available, so plan accordingly if you want that.
We ordered El Viejon’s Catch (a mix of ceviche seafood and veggies in their Sinaloa sauce) to share which was good overall, but we noticed a lot of the shrimp were whole and quite raw, almost like they were added in last-second to extend the dish.
I have yet to try any breakfast/brunch dishes, but other diners with me have tried their lattes and liked them.

Went here for lunch and for happy hour. We really enjoyed the great attentive service and the food was delicious.
It’s a great happy hour and we will definitely be back again.

We tried their guava margarita, mango margarita, and the spicy cucumber margarita. I like the guava margarita most. They aren’t made with tequila but with I believe wine vodka instead. Still tasty though.

My friend and I went for lunch on Thursday and it was our first time here. The menu had a variety of offerings. The restaurant had a nice ambiance though a little loud as more people arrived and the music in the background was lively. Our server was nice but got busy and didn’t check whether we needed more water or anything else. The food was very good.

Great spot for Mexican seafood with a nice atmosphere! This is my third time here and first time too Happy Hour. The margaritas were only $7– an oyster is only $1.50 apiece such a good deal. We enjoyed a peach margaritas and a dozen oysters. I had an ahi tostada from the happy hour menu, which was fresh and delicious, as well as a shrimp and cheese taco that hit the spot. Others in my group ordered the three-carnitas taco plate with rice and beans and really enjoyed it.

Overall, tasty food, great prices during happy hour, and a welcoming vibe. Definitely worth a visit!

Unlike the Convoy location, this location has plenty of parking and indoor seating. Your order is taken after you are seated not at the counter. Same club music. Large tv’s for sports and a nice bar. They’re just missing a dance floor to go along with the music!

Came on a Tuesday and there weren’t any Tuesday taco deals. Just happy hour Monday – Thursday 3-5pm.

We ordered:

Octopus taco – amazing. The crispy onions gave it an added crunch and generous on the octopus. Choice of spicy salsa macha or pesto. We got salsa macha, it’s like chili oil.

Queso Birria taco w consome – I like the birria taco here over Mike’s Red Taco! It’s fully loaded and flavorful! The broth was not overly salty.

Ceviche de cameron – shrimp, red onions, cilantro, tomato. This one is traditional and basic out of all with refreshing herb flavors. I prefer this ceviche over the other one.

La coqueta – cooked shrimp, octopus, red onions, cucumber, roasted pepper, cilantro. This one had all the nice assortment but it was too wet. The tostado got soggy. It also had cream cheese base that I didn’t like.

Garlic shrimp plate – came with salad, rice and beans. We substituted the beans for more salad. The salad had a hint of jalapeño dressing that gave it a kick of spicy peppers. 10 shrimps! The rice was too wet for me, I prefer dryer. It also came with a side of tortillas.

We each got the guava margarita. The guava purée tasted like the guava juice from Costco! Regardless, it was delicious. Originally, I wanted the tamarindo margarita but they sold out.

It’s so nice we have one more brunch spot in scripps ranch! We literally need more this kind of restaurant. It looks modern, nice and delicious. I went there with two of my best friends. We ordered some tacos and fried fish. The tacos I choose is Quesitaco and Smoke Fish taco, both of them are very yummy, especially the Quesitaco, highly recommend! It is also huge! Two tacos are totally enough for me. They also have a lot of brunch items, I will definitely try it the next time. Their drinks menu look very great as well. I had a Chai tea latte and my friends had tiramisu latter, we all love them. The waitress is super sweet and friendly. I enjoyed the experience. The only thing is I felt my stomach is uncomfortable that afternoon and night, I’m not sure if it is related with their foods, hope not.

Amazing seafood spot. Diana made our visit such a memorable experience, she was very warm and welcoming, high, HIGH level customer service and really took the time to explain the menu to my family and I. Upon Diana’s superb recommendation I had the Red snapper dish and it’s the best I have had hands down. Cooked to perfection, prices are very affordable, there is something for everyone here. My kids loved the kids menu options. This is our new spot for seafood, drinks and great vibes. El Viejon has a full bar now, great tequila and Mezcal. Diana demonstrated her fantastic bartending skills and whipped me up a smokey Mezcal Old Fashioned and my wife had a tasty Margarita. This place is BOMB. Thank you Diana, we will be back. 10/10

I was excited to try their brunch menu. I had a group of five. It seems like they were understaffed. There was only one waitress taking orders. We were not offered water so we had to ask for it.

I ordered a Chef’s Special Chilaquiles with red sauce. It’s a little salty but very tasty. It’s loaded with carnitas and seafood. I ordered a tiramisu latte but it’s sweet and it could have a bit more espresso. The tres de leche pancakes were ok, nothing special. One person ordered pancakes with bacon and scramble eggs on the side. They brought her eggs out first and it’s cold and dry by the time the rest of her food came out. They forgot about her bacon order. The waitress went in the kitchen and brought a side of bacon in a cup. They were dry and burned. She told the waitress about it and was offered another order. We were done eating by the time bacon came. Another person ordered black coffee and again it took a long time. When it came out, it was cold and didn’t taste fresh.

I really wanted to like this restaurant but i was disappointed. It seems like the staff needs to be trained more. I’d like to give them amount try for happy hour in the future.
