This was my first and last time at this restaurant. For the price of the food one would expect speed and presentation. The tortilla stuck to the plate as if it was microwaved. The tortilla fell apart while eating and gives me reason to believe they were store bought. The place is nice however having that bad of an experience I’d rather go else where.

Honestly, you don’t come here for the atmosphere. Although, it has really improved over the last 20 years. In my experience and every experience that I’ve had at this restaurant, it is a little hole in the wall gem. If you want authentic, check it out. One of my favorites that they’ve had forever is the sopa de Nopales. Cactus soup. If you know good soup, you know that good soup is all in the broth! And they definitely have this down. Haven’t been here for years and today I went with my sister and was so happy that it’s still there. We drove over 30 minutes to hit this place.

Seriously! If you want authentic Mexican food, El Tlacoyo is one of your best choices in Phoenix. The variety of choices is huge! They servers are nice, and the owner Yolanda is the coolest lady. She came out of the kitchen to check on us, she’s really sweet. We go to El Tlacoyo every time we get a chance. One of our favorite things to get is the barbacoa by the pound to share. Make sure you try their Quesadillas too, they’re delicious.

READ THE ENTIRE OBJECTIVE REVIEW

Love exploring authentic restaurants in lesser known restaurants places. Today we traveled to this place hoping for an authentic home style Mexican meal.

Unfortunately we didn’t find what we hoped and desired.

Read the objective review. Overall ⭐️⭐️

First time here, objective review.

Overall ⭐️⭐️

The quality of the food is questionable. Ordered several items to get a taste of their menu. This was the first restaurant that I have received food poisoning from.

Here’s the food that was ordered;

#61 2 Chili Relleno with beans, Rice and Corn Tortilla’s. The food came out really fast which means items have been assembled and precooked. The chili relleno tasted like chicken Parmesan. The chili relleno had a tomato sauce with a ton of cheese. I couldn’t see the chili relleno, was there even two chili relleno’s??

#70 The second item ordered was the enchiladas suizas with sour cream. The came out later. The green tomatillo sauce literally tasted like it was spoiled. I’m thinking this is what gave me food poisoning. I was looking forward to authentic enchiladas.

#21 & #30. Tacos I ordered Al Pastor and Chicken tacos. Both lacked flavor and where cold. The chicken was very Chewy and bland!

On the bright side, the service was outstanding. Friendly servers checking in on you the entire time.

Overall, if you’re looking for a good Mexican meal, you wouldn’t find it here.

I hope they improve.

The food here was very tasteful. We had lengua, chicken & carnitas tacos. Along with a carnitas burrito, beans, rice & Modelo & Dos Equis beers. Our server, David (I believe that was his name), was so kind, helpful with the menu & how the dishes came since it was our first time here. My wife & I will be back when we’re out visiting the east valley, we highly recommend this restaurant.

I went there specifically for their huitlacoche quesadilla. Per David’s recommendation, we tried the mixiotes special. It’s a slow cooked lamb and port dish in red sauce, not spicy. It was so delicious. We brought the leftover home to make tacos after adding so cheese.

The food was very good. If I were rating the food alone it would be a 5. There were some language issues though. I’m very glad my boyfriend speaks Spanish or I seriously think I couldn’t have eaten here. They realized he spoke Spanish and proceeded to ignore me and some only to him and only in Spanish so that was off putting. Good food and nice decor though.

Incredible restaurant. Lamb on weekends is a must. Staff is friendly and detail-oriented. You will find dishes and ingredients that are uncommon and not served at your average Valley Mexican spot. Specialities from the Hildalgo región mean that you get transported to the Mexican state but you only have to get yourself to East Tempe by the Mesa border. Food is well spiced and made with care and heart. Give this place a try! You will be well rewarded.
