To properly rate this restaurant I can strongly use one perfect word “GREED”!!!!!!!!!!! And I will get back to this vulgar word after I address the other key points of this restaurant. Myself and my husband and 5 of our children decided to go eat here on Sunday 01/18/26 while we were visiting Boise, the restaurant seemed clean and had a festive decor, upon being seated by our waitress we noticed a concided bit snooby ” who cares” type of attitude but oh well we were hungry! So we ordered a seafood ceviche, a Mocajete, and a sampler platter, when our food arrived it was beautifully plated, as we dug into the Mocajete it was mostly a cheese sauce with bland shrimp and the steak was noticably spoiled even after being cooked, the chicken had a good flavor for $40 as far as the platter goes it had a lot of food for $28 it was astetically beautiful but the flavor was mediocre at best. For the seafood ceviche it was a stagnant mushy fishy plate that was beautifully presented but wasn’t the best quality for around $23. So here goes the declaration of GREED! As we left we gave a $8 tip on the table which was less than we would have normally left but our waitress seemed to be odley content not giving service with a smile, as my husband paid the bill it seemed like it was very expensive beyond what we calculated and as I reviewed the receipt right there on the bottom was a added gratuity of $20 ” FOR WHAT” mediocre snobby service with cheap tasting food! So after discovering this I proceeded to ask the waitress karen where this surprise charge was posted and her response was it’s in the system and otomatically added she lied , the awful thing is that this restaurant can charge you this fee without even giving notice, and that’s why the waitress didn’t work hard for her tip because she knew she was going to get a sweendled tip either way and that is steeling ! She didn’t even offer to give the cash tip back , even though I wouldn’t have accepted it but she was so greedy and so is the restaurant for allowing the servers to set their gratuity she claimed we were a table of ” 19 ” ma’am you are a greedy thief and your stolen money will come back and bite you! $28 tip , we are never ever ever going back. I ordered a shrimp quesadilla, without knowing the price, because it’s not on the menu, but I didn’t expect it to be $5 more than a steak fajitas quesadilla! $21 is a lot for a single dish, but it was very delicious with plenty of shrimp, many sautéed veggies (mushroom, green peppers, onions, etc.), and huge containers of guacamole, salsa & sour cream. I was pleasantly surprised to see a bag of corn chips and salsa, just as you’d get at the restaurant as an appetizer. Fresh & crisp! The dish was hot and ready when I arrived for pickup. Beware that they have slightly higher prices for credit cards over cash, and they charge for to-go packaging which is fair and understandable, but was a surprise as it wasn’t mentioned. The restaurant has indoor & outdoor seating in season. The inside is gorgeous! See pics. After getting home, I realized that the bill I was shown was not the amount that I was charged, as it was almost $30. Another $5 more than I had expected. As it turns out, there was a mishap at the register, and allthough I was shown the correct bill, they charged me for another customer’s dining check. I returned to the restaurant the following day, to sort out the situation. The woman I spoke with was very pleasant and offered me $10 cash back and surprised me with a dessert to-go for my troubles, a slice of delicious chocolate cake! I’m very pleased with how they handled this matter, and I informed her that I would definitely be returning for another meal. My recommendation is to confirm prices. If you are ordering off the menu, and double check before you make payment that you have received the correct check.

El Tenampa Mexican & Cantina is located on Main Street in Meridian, ID. It is a great spot for authentic Mexican food lovers. We walked in and a cute little old lady was making fresh tortillas in the front dining area. We got seated quickly. Atmosphere was genuine, friendly and welcoming, very authentic. It felt close to our New Mexico home land. The food ordered was delicious and so was my drink to celebrate! It was my daughter’s birthday so the wait staff surprised us by coming out with a Sombrero hat, a birthday cake & sang Happy Birthday to her! It was fantastic! It completely made her day!! So then My other daughter said, ‘I want to celebrate my birthday here too!’ Lol.

We had a birthday celebration here yesterday. With 12 people they seated us in a private room, which was perfect. We tend to be loud and had a few toddlers we could let out of the chairs.
The food and service were excellent. The servings were generous. The atmosphere was very colorful upbeat and clean.

I had the Seafood Enchiladas here before and they were amazing—great flavor and very generous portions. Because of that experience, I came back with my daughter after receiving a $15 off $30 Facebook coupon.
We ordered the Seafood Chimichanga, and I was shocked by the size. It was no bigger than a tiny frozen burrito and was almost all tortilla with very little filling. For $24, it was basically a child-sized portion and had far less seafood than just one of my previous enchiladas.
We were told to mention the coupon before ordering (which we did). We also ordered queso for $11, which came in a very small dish and was watery and disappointing.
If you offer a coupon, don’t shrink the portions to make up for it. The food is already expensive for what you get, and using a coupon felt like being penalized. Unfortunately, we won’t be returning.
I do want to mention the service was good, but the waitress was extremely loud. Her voice level was on high. You felt like she was yelling at you. I didn’t think that it was that loud in there for her to use that high of a pitch.

Time and time again el tenampa over delivers on exceptional food, service, cleanliness, and friendliness. I have been to this location around 10 times now and I have not had a single issue ever at this restaurant. You walk in to a very welcoming atmosphere, its a small restaurant but its homely. Most of the time you are greeted by eddy. Very very nice guy, even all of the staff are extremely friendly and are always attentive and always check on you. The food is reasonably priced and the food is out of this world delicious. The cooks really know how to make delicious authentic mexican food and i know everyone works hard to deliver a great experience for everyone. Service is extremely fast as well when you order your food. I will never stop coming to this restaurant and will always recommend to anyone I talk too. 10/10 always always good.

Where to start?
We’ve come to El tenampa for over ten years. Never had a bad experience. For the past few months though….the prices have gone up, the quantities have gone down, and so has the quality. It’s no longer the El Tenampa we came to love.
Today we went to celebrate a birthday. Started off with margaritas. Well…it was a sip and a half mixed in tons of ice. I counted 14 ice cubes. That doesn’t leave much room for margarita.
Then the food. I always have the Enchilada Ranchero. It never failed me. Until today. The enchiladas were tiny, the rice was cold, and the refried beans: definitely watered down. Looked like something off the kids’ menu. To have to spend $130 for two adults and two kids (2 margaritas, 2 lemonades, and each a main course, that was it), is most definitely heavily overpriced.
The birthday flan (which was added to the bill, mind you), was served half way through the main course. So by the time we were ready for the flan – dessert – yeah…molten and cold.
It was most definitely the worst experience we had in a long long time.
We might give El Tenampa another chance. If this turned out to be the new reality: we will not be back.

Their food is absolutely horrible. The salsa that comes with the free chips and salsa had a strange after taste.
I ordered the huevos and charizos. It came with something resembling guacamole. I’m pretty sure it was from a can and not fresh.
There was literally a puddle of grease under the food.
If you dare to eat at this establishment, don’t say I didn’t warn you!

We Found It!! The Best Mexican Restaurant! I’m telling you now it’s worth every bite! Today was our 2nd encounter and we got to enjoy the All you can eat Buffet!My tummy was set on their amazing Carne Asada platter-
(I love it) But the buffet was Fabulous! This food is very authentic and you can see them make their homemade tortillas! I highly suggest “Go Hungry” Eddy welcomed us with open arms. The many options from Salsa Verde smothered with Carnitas and my favorite Cerviche ~ Oh my and the flavored Refried Beans .. melts in your palate! Let’s add some menudo and Pozole! Buffett is only on Saturdays-10:30-2:00
