The El Sombrero Restaurant in Las Cruces is a place I would frequent when I was attending school at NMSU. Though I know there are other places that carry the El Sombrero name, but for me, this is the one and only original place known for its fantastic food. A real family own and operated restaurant that has been part the the Las Cruces eating scene for over 60 years.

After a long trip and with the setting sun over the western horizon, I pulled into El Sombrero’s parking lot it was full of cars. The main part of El Sombrero was filled with customers, I chose to be seated in the less crowded enclosed patio area which had the normal southern new mexico style decorations and stylized painted motifs that one tends to find in older established restaurants in new mexico.

I ordered the tostadas compuestas plate, which came as per my instructions with two tostadas featuring green chile and one with red chile. In my opinion, very few places prepare tostadas compuestas correctly, the corn tostada must be in a form of a small bowl and El Sombrero is one of the best. The wait staff was very attentive, and the food arrived in a timely manner—the necessary time, I knew, for a dish of this kind. I was not disappointed with the flavor of either the red or green chile. The tostadas compuestas had the perfect level of crispness without being greasy, a quality only achievable by a restaurant that truly understands how to prepare this dish. Furthermore, the beans and rice were also top-notch in both preparation and flavor.

El Sombrero is one of the best in a city that has in my opinion the best southern new mexico cuisine.

Great Mexican restaurant in Las Cruces! The food choices were wonderful as was the taste. We ordered the combos as it was our first time and loved each one. The manager gave us some red and green sauce and some chips ahead of our order to help us choose. That’s good service! In fact the whole crew was very friendly and accommodating. Check this place out if you want really authentic food and local flare.

I went with a friend and ordered three corn tortilla tacos, 2 with beef and 1 with shredded chicken. I also had refried beans and rice.

Trina was a wonderful resource to tell me that the chips for the chips and salsa are in a shared fryer with other gluten items. I knew I would be okay by avoiding the chips.

It was a great experience, and I would love to go back.

I drove through here to have the enchiladas and they were outstanding. I’m from Texas so the heat from the chilies caught me by surprise. Loved it all!

My family and I had the best service and food at El Sombrero. A big shout out to Marin. She’s the best waitress we’ve ever had there. Friendly quick and suggested things we would like. Plus quick on the refills. The absolute best service from her. Thank you! She made out time lovely. Plus the ground beef taco plate is the best in town. The salsa is delicious too.

El Sombrero hits the spot! The enchiladas were cheesy, loaded with flavor, and that chile sauce was amazing. The rice and beans were solid, and the chips and salsa came out quick and fresh. Big portions, chill vibe, and super friendly staff. If you’re in Las Cruces and want some legit New Mexican food, this is the place!

We always receive good service except for today. No lemons when asked for with water, no refill for drinks, never came back to see if everything was ok. Dropped off ticket when we were planning to have dessert. Oh and forgot my guac n sour cream with my meal.
