El Sazón R.D. – Review – Chinatown – New York – The Infatuation

El Sazón in Chinatown layers their Dominican smashburger with a formidable slice of queso blanco, and this delicious thing has gone viral a few times over.

I’m always up for trying out a new Dominican spot in NYC and hearing one is in Chinatown I had to check this out especially given the recent win the spot got winning the 2025 Blue Moon Burger Bash People’s Choice Award for Best Burger with their Dominican Smash Burger. Right off the bat, the spot is a bit small but works well if your coming with a friend as their are some seats and a charging station too if you need that recharge which is nice of them to have but for the most part this is a grab and go spot as I did see a number of people come and pick up their orders though they did have a good number of people just ordering which tells me the spot is getting a good deal of traffic and word is getting around. Staff were nice and happy to answer questions, I also like the décor and overall a good vibe here.

Coming in for lunch, I made my order for their El Sazon R.D. specialty sandwich with baked chicken (you could also do with pernil if you want) which was $14 and their homemade iced tea at $5. Took a little bit of time, but not too long which I appreciate them taking their time and the result spoke for itself. The sandwich, served on a hero, is packed full of flavor with fried salami, sweet plantain, fried cheese, pickled onions, chimi sauce, and the baked chicken that really the only thing I didn’t feel much of were the onions but everything else was great and very filling. The plantain was just right, the salami at the center is a good choice, the cheese was good, the pieces of chicken were nice and the sauce had a good flavor to it. They cut the hero in two and also provide hot sauce and ketchup on the side if you need it but honestly they should look into providing extra chimi sauce. I can definitely tell that the pernil would be even more filling and I think it does justify the price given all the ingredients and given I went to Brooklyn recently to try a Tres Golpes sandwich that was smaller and a bit more expensive, you definitely get good value here at El Sazon. The iced tea was good but a little more than I would like. Perhaps a thought would be to keep the current size but also offer a smaller size at a lower price for all the drinks.

Overall, a solid first trip to El Sazon that I will be back to try out their mofongos next and maybe even that award winning smashburger.

They open at 0900hrs for a nice breakfast.

I ordered their double smash burger and was pretty impressed. The meat was nicely seasoned and the buns were soft as air. The pickles nicely balanced the oily textures of cheese and meat.

Very friendly service and pretty fast too.

GET THE LOADED FRIES! they are SO good, and thoroughly sauced so no dry fries at the bottom like sometimes happens. Also got the smashburger with fried cheese and i don’t think i can eat them any other way now

the place is a tiny hole in the wall, no frills, but great food, great prices, and friendly staff.

The pernil here is amazing, the burger is in a league of its own, and don’t forget to order an abundance of Mojito de Ajo! I would highly recommend El Sazón to anyone looking for authentic Dominican food in Lower Manhattan.

I ordered the Dominican Burger with one patty, cheese and grilled onions, and it did not disappoint. When it arrived, it was piping hot, so hot I had to wait a moment before digging in, which I actually love because it means it’s fresh off the grill. The cheese really elevated the flavor, adding a creamy richness that tied the whole burger together. It was juicy, flavorful, and absolutely delicious.
I also tried the Chimi Empanada, filled with ground beef, peppers, mozzarella cheese, and onions. The flavors were great, savory with a nice blend of texture, though I do wish it had been a bit larger.

To drink, I had their passion fruit juice. It was refreshing, but I found the flavor a bit lighter than I expected; I would have preferred it to be more intense.

Overall, I’d rate my experience an 8.4 out of 10. The food was tasty, fresh, and satisfying, and I’d definitely come back to try more from the menu.

The best Dominican food in an unusual place! Chinatown! Surrounded by a lot of great Chinatown restaurants, this place holds its own as the only Dominican restaurant in the area as far as I know. I’ve been here twice so far this week. The first thing I had to try was the smash burger with fried cheese chimi sauce and it was amazing! I also had the beef stew sandwich which was also delicious. On the second day I had the Pernil lunch special with Rice and Beans which was cooked to perfection. Also the prices for everything were great as well. This is going to be my go to regular spot when I don’t feel like going all the way to Washington Heights.

Nice change of pace if you’re grabbing food in the area.
Had the El Sazon Fries and it’s definitely something you share. Wondering if they would substitute the salami for pernil if asked.
Will be back for their other items though!
