El Royale Café is our cinematic tribute to the golden age of Mexican-American dining—those gloriously unpretentious, neon-lit Tex-Mex institutions that line the streets of California and Texas. Equal parts romance and revelry, they were places where the sizzle of fajitas met the clink of salt-rimmed margaritas, and atmosphere mattered as much as appetite. We’ve captured that spirit—with a dash of glamour—and brought it to Birmingham. Set in the city’s revitalized Lakeview District, El Royale is richly layered with custom stained glass, hand-finished millwork, and vintage detail. Outside, a European-style garden invites guests to linger beneath a canopy of trees.

Before entering you are offer free valet service, big plus. Once you do enter the beautiful garden like setting is a delight to take in. The staff was very friendly and seated us immediately. I took advantage of making a reservation, which I highly recommend if you visit during the busier hours. The entire restaurant’s decor was very pleasing to the eye and it made your dining experience feel more special.
The food was excellent and the drinks we good.
I will definitely be back to experience more of the menu and to enjoy the atmosphere.
When you first walk in, it’s beautiful the greenery, the lighting, the red booths (I love a bold red moment), the décor… everything is so well done. The place feels elevated but warm. And the staff? They do not play about cleanliness. The moment someone gets up from a table or the bar, someone is right there cleaning immediately. From the bar you can even see part of the kitchen, which I love.
Reservations are a MUST we waited about an hour and a half for a table, so definitely call ahead unless you don’t mind sitting at the bar. Thankfully, the bar had space, so we started with drinks. He ordered the Paloma with the grapefruit garnish super cute presentation. I ordered the Mambo Taxi frozen drink (half sangria, half margarita). It was flavorful, but I really wish they had asked if I wanted sugar or salt because the salt threw the whole drink off for me.
We ordered chips and dip, but the chips didn’t come out at first, so we had to wait a bit. Once we finally got to the dinner table (barely… the vibes were off from the date), our server whose name started with a P was incredibly patient. Like, extremely patient. He was gentle, attentive, and really worked with the situation even though I was mentally checked out at that point. He honestly made the experience better than it could have been.
For dinner, I originally wanted the steak, but it didn’t come with sides, so I switched to the steak and chicken fajitas. Looking back, I wish I had just ordered the steak alone the chicken was dry, but the steak was really good, especially with the chimichurri sauce I added on. The veggies on the fajitas were a little overpowering for me, but the steak itself was the highlight.
I ordered another drink the Party Vixen and I didn’t like that one at all, so that’s something I’ll skip next time. The taste I can’t explain.
Overall, the service was great, the ambiance was beautiful, and I truly need to come back on a better day to enjoy everything properly. This place has so much potential for a much better experience than the one I had due to the date, not the restaurant.
I’ll definitely return and try it again with a clear mind and a fresh start.
The atmosphere is moody, absolutely gorgeous, fabulous and the lighting is romantic.
I had the chicken tinga enchiladas and they were divine!
We ordered the dip trio for an appetizer and all of the dips were delicious, but the salsa that came with the chips was the best salsa I’ve ever had. Ever.
I highly recommend ordering the Flaming Royale cocktail and the Diamond Daquiri.
Both were amazing!
Our server, Chris L. was excellent.
I’ve found my new favorite restaurant in Birmingham, for sure!
Arrived a few minutes before our resy, seated on arrival, and our server arrived to our table promptly. Ordered the guac and queso for apps which were both delicious along with the complimentary salsas that were perfectly spicy and fresh. I got the grouper tacos after a recommendation from the waiter and those were tasty served in fresh tortillas. Churros for dessert were great also. The drinks are good, but the food was worth coming for alone.
