My mother and I ate here recently, my mother was thoroughly impressed with her tacos. Although I’m writing this a while after our visit so I don’t remember exactly what we ate. But I had a burrito with pulled pork or something similar and found it quite bland. However the texture was good and so others might quite enjoy it. As for atmosphere, I found it too loud for my comfort but I do not like loud environments in general and it likely wasn’t too loud for the open canteen style setup. Overall I have a good impression of this restaurant. While my personal experience wasn’t ideal my mother and the other diners around seemed to greatly enjoy themselves. There were no issues with the service.

Venturing through Maine on our way to Sebago Lake, we made a delicious stop at El Rayo in Scarborough, and it did not disappoint!

We started with the Loaded Tot Nachos—crispy tots topped with crema, melted Monterey Jack cheese, and plenty of jalapeños ️. I just love a good cheese pull and a great take on classic nachos. 7/10

For tacos, we tried a trio:

Sweet Potato Taco: Chipotle mayo, corn salsa, veggie slaw, and cotija cheese—sweet meets spicy. 7/10
BBQ Pulled Pork Taco: This was the standout of the night! The pork was perfectly tender and flavorful, topped with veggie slaw, cotija, and red onion escabeche. 9/10
Pescado Taco: Grilled achiote fish, avocado, chipotle mayo, and veggie slaw—a fresh and tasty option!7/10
We also dug into the Steak California Burrito —loaded with papas fritas, Monterey Jack, crema fresca, guac, and house pickled jalapeños. A full, flavorful burrito, perfect if you like it a little saucy! 8/10

We also tried the Surf & Turf Special (shrimp and steak) and they did not skimp out on the meat here 8/10.

For dessert, we enjoyed:

Coconut Muffin Cake: Packed with coconut flakes—so good! 8/10
Housemade Flan: Rich and creamy. 8/10
Key Lime Pie: Tangy, refreshing, and just what we needed to finish. 8/10
I also appreciated the pineapple salsa (unique and I wish more mexican spots made salsa like this? maybe a salsa flight??), and guacamole paired with the chips for the table—so flavorful! They have another location in Portland too, so definitely worth a visit wherever you are in Maine.

Overall: A solid 8/10—definitely worth the stop if you’re heading through the area!
Ambiance: 6/10—with some outdoor seating at the Scarborough location.
Affordability: 7/10—good prices ($4.95 per taco, $16 for burrito).

Perfect for a taco fix on your way to Sebago Lake!

Had one bartender who was amazing, unfortunately his shift ended and a different one came on. The second bartender made me a margarita (I asked if it was very sour because often I get heartburn, he stated not sour at all) I got mid self tequila and the table got food. When the drink arrived I took a sip and couldn’t drink it so I offered it to my guest who tried it and also thought it was sour. No problem. Brought the drink to the bar told him im sorry but its just not for me, he offered another drink and that was that. Fast forward to paying up I get the bill and im being charged for the margarita. So I say, “the margarita you poured out is on the bill are you going to charge me for something I didn’t drink?” His reply was the best
“The drink was a you problem, not a me problem. I dont have to but thats why im charging you.”

Thats the most childish response I have ever gotten in an establishment I was shocked. Its not like he wasnt getting a tip the check was over $100.

Definitely will not return.

Brought my friend to try it out together, we got the basic steak burrito. She had a Coca Cola with it, and water for myself. The atmosphere inside seemed lovely but we opted to set outside on the patio to enjoy some sun. The servers were up to speed, there was little to no waiting for anything. I had a delicious lunch. The chips and salsa were fresh and amazing!

I highly recommend that you order the street corn. The esteemed pineapple. The single tacos are generously filled, and two can constitute a meal; however, I recommend ordering three as they are exceptionally enjoyable. I do not follow a vegetarian diet; however, this restaurant offers an impressive variety of options. The burrito bowls are exceptional; I wish they were more accessible so I could savor them throughout the year.

The food is fantastic. Slightly higher in price than what I expected at first but there’s never a wait. The portions are spot on and flavors always hit. I like that they offer NA beers too.

Fiesta Chicken Salad arrived with NO chicken…this is not the first time. Quality here has gone way down. Everything is overpriced these days so when I spend money on takeout I want it to at least have the main protein I paid for – but I guess El Rayo staff thinks it’s okay to pay for something and not get it. Fail, El Rayo. Fail.

Not my choice of Mexican restaurant. I didn’t realize it was order at counter and food was delivered. Mainly bowls or salads. No meals with beans and rice or a small salad. The worst part was the NOISE. Very hectic. We were told it was better than another one, but we disagree.

Came in between lunch and dinner and service was super quick and the food is really tasty! We ordered the taquitos and a rice and bean bowl. All were delicious and fresh. If I could change anything it would be for the food to be spicier. I didn’t ask for a spicy sauce but will next time! Highly recommend!

I cannot stress this enough: order the street corn. The golden pineapple. The single tacos are loaded and 2 is a meal, but get 3 because they’re that good. I’m not a vegetarian, but this restaurant has so many options it’s incredible. The burrito bowls are out of this world I wish they were closer to home and I could enjoy them all year.
