An after work dinner that hit the spot. The taco salad was delicious, heavy on the veges but just what I needed. One large margarita and a full belly, I was happy. Service was wonderful and plenty of seating.
There’s plenty of parking ( located in a shopping center). However, be careful, the lighting in the area at night is horrible (barely any at all).

El Ranchero is a hidden gem that absolutely delivers on authentic, delicious Mexican food. Tucked away but unforgettable once you find it, this spot serves up dishes that are both fresh and full of soul.

The Steak Ranchero was the star of the meal—tender, flavorful, and spiced just right to keep each bite interesting without overpowering the dish. It had that perfect kick that lingers pleasantly without setting your mouth on fire.

And don’t skip dessert—the flan was a standout. Sweet, sticky, and rich with caramel, it tasted like something your abuela would make on a Sunday afternoon. Classic comfort.

To top it off, the waitress was incredibly kind and patient, making us feel welcome and well taken care of from start to finish. El Ranchero isn’t just a place to eat—it’s a place to relax, indulge, and feel right at home.

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Charlottesville. I had chicken mole and, while the sauce could use some work, the chicken was perfectly cooked. The carnitas are excellent, every bit as good if not better than Tacos Gomez. Ask for the salsa picante for a little more kick than their regular salsa. They also have an interesting salsa blanco, for a change is pace. Good service, nice people, give them a try.

We came to this restaurant while traveling thru town because the reviews were great. Our experience has been not great at all. The server forgot to bring our drinks (there were only 3 tables in the entire restaurant). The food came out room temp at best ($16 Nacho Fajitas). The cheese wasn’t even melted all the way. There was a bone in a piece of chicken. We had to flag down servers for refills and for the check. We eat at Mexican restaurant all the time. This one was mediocre at best. They did at least take the nachos off our bill which is the only reason we gave 3 stars instead of 2.

Things we liked – Food came out fast, good service. Clean restaurant

Things we don’t like – seasoning, I don’t think I’ve ate at a Mexican restaurant with less seasoning, I love this cultures food because of the experience of the chiles and spices. Was very bland, even my birria tacos were meh. I’ve had more heat eating a bag of chips. (The salsa was the hottest thing and that’s saying something)

Not trying to persuade or discourage business, but just leave your taste buds at home you won’t need them much.

El Ranchero is a hidden gem that deserves more attention! The furniture gave me classic Mexican vibes like the ones you’d find in Texas, and the food—wow, it’s incredible, especially for the price. I got the Horchata, which was pretty good, though I personally would’ve liked a bit more cinnamon. For my meal, I ordered the Molcajete, and it was amazing. For just $25, you get grilled steak, chicken, shrimp, chorizo (could’ve been spicier), cactus, Oaxaca cheese, beans, and tortillas. Definitely a 10/10 for me.

The service was just as impressive—prompt and super friendly. They also served homemade chips and salsa that were absolutely delicious. This place is definitely worth checking out!

The restaurant looks very new and is extremely clean. The frozen margaritas are huge and so good. The molcajete is large enough to share and the sopes were great!

My husband and I stopped here for lunch while traveling through Charlottesville. We absolutely loved it. The service was friendly, the resturant was well maintained, and the food was absolutely exceptional. Definitely one of the best restaurants we’ve eaten at in a while. Honestly I wish we lived closer so we could regularly eat here.
