If you’re craving classic Tex-Mex with big flavors and a welcoming vibe, El Ranchero Restaurant in Nacogdoches is a great choice. This local favorite delivers on taste and atmosphere from the moment you walk in. The decor has a warm, homey Mexican-restaurant feel — colorful walls, traditional accents, and plenty of space make it comfortable for casual dinners or gatherings with friends. The overall vibe is relaxed and inviting, perfect for everything from a weekday lunch to a laid-back weekend dinner.

One of the real highlights here has to be the shrimp cocktail. Served Mexican-style with fresh chopped shrimp, avocado, tomatoes, cilantro, and tangy tomato sauce, it’s refreshing and generously portioned — a great starter that feels a bit more special than your average appetizer.

And the salsa? Many locals swear this is some of the best in town. It’s served warm alongside ample chips, rich with flavor and just the right balance of tomato, spices, and freshness to whet your appetite before the main course. It’s easy to see why it’s been a standout item for diners over the years.
Overall, El Ranchero blends comforting decor, flavorful dishes like their shrimp cocktail, and beloved house salsa into a solid, satisfying Tex-Mex experience in Nacogdoches. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a first-timer, it’s worth a stop.

Delicious Mexican food. Definitely a must try! Street tacos were spectacular and the special salsa is terrific. Appetizers were a good way of sampling the quality of their food, which is very high. Definitely eating again next time I’m in the area!

We are visiting the area to tour Stephen F Austin University. We decided to try this place. It was very busy and a little loud. The food was okay. It came out very quick, so I question the freshness of the food. My daughter has the enchilada verdes and said they were okay. She said she preferred my enchiladas. My husband had a chimichanga, which was small compared to other restaurants we’ve been to. He said it was good, but wished it was bigger. I had the fajitas, which came with garlic butter. The meat was tender, but lacked seasoning. The garlic butter definitely enhanced the flavor of the meat. The chips were nice and crispy and the salsa was good. We also enjoyed the queso with taco meat.

Fair price, fair quality of food for the area. Wait staff definitely could use some training. Wait staff continually would reach across my plate to refill my cup or anything. Even placed other patrons tray of food on our table as they served them.

Visiting from out of town and found this place. Food was amazing and very reasonably priced. Service was standard, not excellent but certainly not bad. Serving sizes were good, guaranteed to fill you up. I had the stacked nachos. Sooooo good and way more than you can possibly eat at 1 time. I ate until i was full and still had to sort the leftovers into 2 to-go containers because it wouldnt fit in 1. My only complaint is the Chips and Salsa. The Chips were prolly the best ive had at a restaurant but the salsa was ughhhhh. First, they serve it hot, salsa is not suppose to be hot in my opinion. Second, it didnt taste good, tasted like tomato soup. I was very dissappointed!!! Thats the only thing that was bad though. The rest of the food was excellent, cheap and lots of it!!! Would definetly recommend you give them a try, you will not be disappointed i promise!!!

The best tex-mex ever! They had this homemade bread that had the middle cut out into nacho bread wedges and the queso was in the middle of the bread with shrimp and crawfish. The steak fajitas were awesome, but they were fajitas; but it was diabolical how good the chocolate lava cake was. Definitely recommend and I will be making the 3 hour trek back again

Been here several times, each time is always perfect. Clean restaurant, friendly staff, and fun decorating. Food is always good! My new favorite place for Birria Tacos. Prices are a little high, but it’s worth it in the end!

I waited about 3 minutes for my order to come out. The food was served on a piping hot plate so that was the first red flag – microwaved.
Second red flag is, guacamole paste? Not even real avocados?
I only stopped in because the reviews say “Best in Nac” – if this is the best, would hate to see the worst
Sweet tea was great. Server was friendly. It is clean inside. Management did not charge me for my food.
