We originally came down this way to see the Christmas lights at Callaway Gardens, and after asking a few locals where to eat, everyone pointed us to El Primo Mexican Restaurant. Let me just say — I am SO glad we listened.
It’s about 7 miles down the road in Hamilton, a place we’d never been to and didn’t know much about. The storefront is simple and unassuming, but the moment you walk in, it’s warm, welcoming, and inviting — the kind of place where you instantly feel comfortable.
We ordered beers, I had a premium skinny margarita with a Tajín rim (chef’s kiss ), and we shared the combination fajitas.
And the food… WOW.
The food is freaking amazing.
No really — the food is freaking amazing.
Let me say it one more time — the food is freaking amazing.
Everything was fresh, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The service was awesome — friendly, attentive, and genuine without being over-the-top. This is not a fussy, pretentious spot — it’s just really, really good food, great drinks, and excellent service.
We live in Atlanta, but honestly? I would drive out here just to eat at El Primo. It’s that good. If you’re anywhere near Callaway or passing through Hamilton, this place is an absolute must-stop.
You want good Mexican food, good drinks, and a great atmosphere?
El Primo is it.

Nice little Taqueria with excellent food and quality margaritas. It’s order at a counter, but the food came out very fast with the fajitas steaming. Margaritas were fresh and excellent. Quaint space in a small town – absolutely love it. We’ll be back the next time we’re at Roosevelt State Park.

The food here was amazing!
I got the steak nachos, my mother got the chicken quesadilla, and my grandfather got a pork burrito. All three dishes were delicious! The Salsa Verde is delicious as well!
Annie was a DOLL and made some delicious sweet tea! We are just visiting but I would definitely come here again if I came this way.

A lady told my husband how good this place was. We happened to be in the area and tried it out. It’s really not a restaurant like I imagined. You order at the counter, get your drinks and plastic utensils then sit wherever you want. We went there about 1:30 on a Friday and was the only ones there. I ordered a veggie burrito and sprite. The sprite was awful so I bought a bottled coke from the cooler. The burrito wouldn’t have been so bad had it been hot, but it was luke warm and the tortilla wrap was not even warm. It was pretty awful. The chips are from a bag, cold and don’t taste good and neither does the sauce. My husband got a steak burrito. He said it just didn’t taste good. We both left at least half of the food. Plus you get the food in these plastic baskets on parchment paper which is difficult to cut your food up. It all seemed cheap with everything plastic, even glases were styrofoam cups. Even if the prices weren’t so high, we still would not go back. Service was not great either with us having to wait for the guy to get off the phone just to get out sauce. Don’t see how they have any good reviews. Awful

Went here thinking we could find a Mexican restaurant without going into town, what a mistake! The food was horrible, my husband had Carniseda and tasted like you were eating a spoon of salt. I had chicken fajitas that were overcooked and the smallest tortilla I had ever seen. The rice was yellow, but flavorless. If you want chips and Salsa to snack on while you wait for your food you will have to pay for it. Prices are outrageous, way too high. Will not be returning for a second time.

So glad this small town had a more diverse food options besides sandwich restaurants. The set up here is different but a great change from the boring restaurant routine. First, you order at the counter and the food is brought to your table. We love the a la cart type menu and the salsa bar was awesome. Everything was fresh. The options of mild to hot salsa sauces complemented our varied taste buds. We tried the authentic tacos (chicken & pork) and pork nachos with a cake like flan dessert. Nice clean restaurant with very reasonable prices. The staff were friendly and helpful. Will recommend and be back. FYI… don’t listen to that one bad review, from reading her 2 reviews (this restaurant & another Mexican restaurant) she may have bias opinions and ties.

First time here…had 2 taco bowls, pork and seasoned beef, order of chips and cheese and 2 waters…$35 ish dollars. Food was not bad, I would go back and try something else, I’m a sucker for cheese dip, I would eat it by itself if I could ..LOL …

Tasty al pastor and pollo asado tacos with Verde salsa. Refreshing Estrella jalisco beer. Fabulous mural in the courtyard with a fountain and a front row seat in town.
