El Potrillo Mexican Grill is located on Lynnhaven Pkwy. near the intersection with Holland Rd. The place is not hard to see from the roadway. It’s basically next door to the Car Spa. My most recent visit here was on November 24, 2025. This is an updated review from the original one from my visit on January 1, 2025.
There have been no issues with parking availability when I have been here. The outside view is pretty basic with the business name and such on the building. After having a reply from them after my original review, and since I had a coupon from the back of a Kroger receipt, I figured it would be a good time to re-try the business.
When my mom and I came in, we were immediately greeted and seated and asked us what we wanted to drink. I went with water with lemon while my mom went with a soda. Someone else came around to put chips and salsas at the table. When our server came back with the drinks, he asked if we were ready to order, and we were. We started with the El Portrillo Dip appetizer. For the entrees, I got the Burrito Bowl with Chicken as the protein. My mom went with the Fajita Taco Salad with Beef as the protein. While waiting for that to come out, we would indulge in the dip and salsas. About 15 minutes later, the entrees came out to the table, and the timing was perfect as we had just finished the dip and such.
The food came out hot and exactly as ordered. Just like the last time, the food was great. The flavors and such were there. I definitely prefer the burrito bowls instead of a burrito now. Our server came back a few times to check on us, and it was nice to hear more conversations in English when compared to the last visit.
Overall, this was a much better experience on this visit. Service was much better and I didn’t feel like I was in a place with a different language going on. Based on this newer experience, I will look to visit this place more often. This is a solid Mexican place to choose from.

Visited this location recently and the food was really good! The fajitas and tacos were so flavorful and filling. Honestly everything on the menu looked good and I’ll definitely be back to work my way through the menu.

Service was great but food was a bit lack luster. Came for lunch and have to say while the service was good, the food a bit less. Maybe it was the time or day, but I was hoping for less cheese to be covering everything. I got a Chile rellano which basically was a Chile doused in cheese, no breading. The beef taco was ground beef in a basic tortilla shell. Having grown up by mexico and i have a set idea of what good Mexican food should be. Maybe I will go and try them one more time.

Great food! Friendly server! Best nachos ever! I rarely get nachos, but these were the best. Just moved back to VB, so it’s been long while since my last visit, but the food is still fantastic years later! Glad to add this to our go-to list for restaurants. Can’t wait to have a margarita next time!

We stopped in because we were craving Mexican food. I am not a cheese sauce kind of guy. They put it on everything. I asked for no cheese sauce and ordered shredded cheese instead of what the menu said. It came with cheese sauce. Very disappointing. Other than that, food was delicious once the order got fixed. I recommend you try it for yourself.

Came here for the first time during lunch. Atmosphere was great with friendly service and I enjoyed the hacienda vibe they had going on. Food/menu looked promising, but lacked in taste. Ordered the house burrito, house enchiladas, and elote. Overall not bad, and the prices were fair, but i would recommend they work on obtaining a more authentic taste in order to compete with their competitors in the area. I’ll try this again during the dinner hours to see if things improve.

Only one waiter/host. Made for terrible service. Food came out slow and separate so it was cold and inedible. When it came out again it was like warm at best. Waiters attitude was terrible. Won’t return.

The service is always amazing and the food is delicious! I love coming here with my family, and the staff knows us by name and remembers our orders! Especially Martin, he’s the bees knees!

Stopped over here for lunch before going to the mall, the chips , sauces homemade so delicious , the white sauce a little flat but the salsa has a nice bite to it , the Burrito I ordered has all 3 meats in it ( Chicken Steak Chorizo ) with the rice and beans definitely can taste it all. And the beer is going great with it. Going to bring the family over here next time

We come here often. Staff is always friendly and food is always great! Asking for the house hot sauce is definitely an added bonus. Oh and can’t forget the great prices.
