I first tried El Protrero when they were Quesidilla Express. They appear to be a family run business. The restaurant is always clean and they are always inviting. The wait time is very reasonable for just about anything you order. The one thing that works against them is that they are in an old bank on the backside of a shopping plaza behind the Oxford Martial Arts studio. It’s very easy to drive right past and miss them. That said, there is no better place to get Mexican food in Oxford. My family and I have never had a bad thing here. My go to at any Mexican place is chicken chimichangas. If you can do that WELL, you’ve got me for life. I’ve dined in at El Protrero and taken out. The shredded chicken in the chimichanga is so tender and flavorful. I almost assume it’s slow cooked and perfectly spiced. The vegetables are fresh and crisp. The portions are perfect. I found another dish I like called “Papas Locas”. Basically, it’s nacho fries. I get it with chorizo. I get it every time I order. It is delicious. You have melted cheese, chorizo, rice, corn, cilantro, tomatoes, lettuce, black beans and sour cream. All that over crinkle cut fries. If you haven’t visited El Protrero, you’re missing out. I’ve tried all the other places in Oxford. The quality is really unmatched. I was a big Burrito Loco guy before finding El Protrero and now ive found a new favorite. Be sure to treat yourself!

Thank you so much to El Potrero for sponsoring a meal for the teachers and staff at Kramer Elementary. Alfonso was so nice and was super excited to support the school. The food was amazing!!! The staff/teachers absolutely loved it. The tacos, quesadillas, queso, steak fajitas, salsa, veggie fajitas, and rice were amazing. We are grateful for you guys!

Really enjoying the new ownership, the food has definitely improved! The portions are now larger and the meats are better quality and flavor.
If you haven’t been lately, come check it out. Very good quality food and reasonable prices. The employees are also all very kind and helpful.

Went here for the first time and got takeout. Food was good and staff was friendly. Restaurant was small which is not a bad thing of course, so if you’re looking for somewhere with a smaller crowd this is a good option. It’s a shame the location is kind of hidden, and it didn’t seem super busy when I went. I bet more college students would go here if it was closer or they at least know about it. I most definitely will be returning in the future, and I hope this place gets more business in the future.

I’ve been coming here since the week they opened, and the quality has consistently been incredible the whole time they’ve been open. The food is amazing and is priced very reasonably. The family who owns it is always incredibly friendly and helpful, this is 100% the best place to get Mexican food in Oxford, whether you eat inside or get takeout. It’s always incredible!

Moving from California to here its always been difficult to find food as close to home for me personally; would highly recommend this place soo much more than the other places here in town!! It felt like I was eating in California again despite it being empty when we visited (my question is why?? People are sleeping on this place ) would highly recommend ordering their Queso Birria if you feel like eating in LA or a Pollo de Caudlo if your feeling sick (door dashed this a while back and helped me get through my flu) Muy rico y me gustó tanto de la comida; muchas gracias a las camareras por los servicios por nosotros

Absolutely love this new restaurant! I genuinely had such a nice time. Friends and I ordered the burrito bowls and quesadilla express, turned out so well. Definitely fresher quality and flavor in the food!! Better than fast food that’s for sure. Oh my god, the owners were so sweet. They were so fun to talk to very friendly. One of our new faves – will definitely be coming back!!

Everyone was very friendly. The food was really good. I was originally going to go to El Burrito Loco, but with the Friday night rush, I instead came here. Also, there was plenty of seating. I hope I have another opportunity to visit if I am passing through town.
