With all the any taco & Mexican restaurants in the area, I am so happy we chose El Portal!!! The best Mexican food we’ve had for years! Victor (the owner) was super accommodating and helpful and what a super nice person! He makes his food from the heart! I recommend the tacos and everything and try the Queso Fundido with Chorizo (OMG that was awesome)! Highly recommend! Californian living in Dallas Texas, his food is so much better than that Texas TexMex!

Old school neighborhood joint! Perfect. Our server was always smiling. The cod tacos were great as were the rice and beans. Chips were thin and crispy. Scratch kitchen. And to make the experience complete, clean bathrooms. This business has definitely been cared for over the years. Nothing fancy. Just good food and service.

First time eating here while visiting Palm Springs CA.

Saw the reviews and thought I’d score with an excellent fajita meal.
The chips and salsa were not that great. Chips kind of heavy rather than light and crispy. The salsa was bland and had chunks of green onions. Firet time id ever seen this.
Not a fan. Ordered the trio fajitas ( shrimp, steak and chicken). The fajitas had very little flavor. The shrimp seemed as if it just came out of a frozen bag. The was a tiny scoop of guac and a tiny scoop of sour cream but ur charging $21 for the meal. Finally the strawberry margarita had very little alcohol. I should either taste or feel it when I drink it.

Overall not worth the $38 meal and $1.14 surcharge for using a credit card.

Won’t ever recommend or eat here again.

Oh the restaurant had very little decorations. Atmosphere could be much more lively or authentic looking rather than looking like soup kitchen.

Our server was great. She was very friendly and attentive to us. The horchata may be the best I have had, and they didn’t skip out on the refills. It took a bit for the food to be ready. Overall, the food was delicious. The only issue I had was the rice. My wife and I both thought it lacked flavor. We Will Be Back!

If you’re looking for the best place to enjoy authentic Mexican food, this is it. If you’re craving something truly special and unique, you need to visit here. The vibrant culture and the incredible aroma from the kitchen create an unforgettable experience.

My family and I come here often, and every visit feels special. The barbacoa is my absolute favorite—it’s a must-try! If you’ve never been to Mexico, this place will transport you there with its flavors and atmosphere.

The servers are always kind and welcoming, making every guest feel right at home. And don’t miss their margaritas—they’re the best in town!

I hope you love the food as much as we do. Merry Christmas, everyone!

Good chimichanga.

I had the Chimichanga, with shredded beef. The beef was tasty. I didn’t pay.attention when ordering, that it came with a sauce on top. The reason I like chimichanga is for the crunchy/crispy shell. The sauce was good, just changed the way I expected a chimichanga to taste (textually). Don’t get me wrong, it was good, but next time I’ll get it without the sauce on top and make it great.

The staff was friendly and fast. We got seated right away, ordered taken shortly after being seated, and food arrived not too long after that.

Tha ambiance of this place it nice, typical stip-mall building, basic Mexican restaurant seating and tables.

We finally made it to this restaurant for dinner. We sat on the patio and watched a beautiful sunset as we dined. We found the menu had some great selections, but we stuck with some ala carte choices as a way to sample several items. The sopa with beef, the beef taco, and tostada were excellent. The enchiladas and tamale were just average, I’d say. The salsa and chips were a winner ( not too spicy with the salsa). Great pricing and service were additional reasons to come back for more.

The way you can tell a Mexican restaurant is going to be GOOD is from their free chips & salsa. And boy these did not disappoint! The service was friendly, the pricing fair, great margs, and EXCELLENT food. Bathrooms could be cleaner, men’s sink was out of commission. However, overall it was clean and maintained. Will be back & recommend!
