The food was great. The service was not! Got coffee. No creamer when I asked. Asked again. Server said they don’t have any. I then asked do they have milk? Yes. Got milk. Then had to get my own spoon to stir. What was I supposed to stir it with? My finger? Then she charged us for adult meals for my three grandchildren. Two are 8. One is 3. Really? The only thing I didn’t like about the food was the tortillas. They were raw. I ask them to please toast them. Came back a little better. Still not cooked right. We didn’t leave a tip. We always tip well,but this time the waitress didn’t care about us so we didn’t care about her.

Prices are a little higher than other Mexican restaurants in the area, but the food is better than the others. Smaller portions also, but who needs to stuff themselves so I guess the portions are just right.

They have really good food, and the staff is really awesome in regards to service, however do keep in mind that it takes a while to get your order if you get take out, I almost always have to wait for my food to be finished. It’s never been a bad meal, it just takes a while.

Service was horrible I understand the guy serving us was new but he could hardly understand English. The order was supposed to be split 2 ways and when I told the cashier what I had he gets the server to verify and then tried to charge me for a margarita that I didn’t even get my friend got it he then tries to verify that I’m telling the truth with the server again like I was lying. Sorry but I will not be back. Good luck guys

Always my favorite place to eat in Hartselle. The food is always good. I’m sad that my favorite server jumped ship to the new place across the highway, but the new guy who took care of us was very, very good. My only complaint: we had to ask 3 times to turn the music down. We’d ask, and they’d turn it down; but a minute later it got cranked up again. It was loud, like in a bar loud. But our server, bless him, finally got whoever to keep it to a reasonable decibel level. The price increase was not completely unexpected; it was just a little shocking at first. But the quality of the meal was worth it. It seemed a little slow for a Saturday night, but the upside was we didn’t have to wait for a table, and our meal was served quickly. I love this place! It won’t matter if 10 other restaurants pop up around it, El Portal #1 will always be my first choice for dining out.

Nice little place right off the highway, easy access, super authentic looking with a very authentic taste. The service was excellent and the food uncannily flavorful. I am not a fan of refried beans but these had a smooth and very woodsy flavor. My entree was packed fairly full of meats and very filling. Definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting an authentic feel.

Really wanted to like this place. My food was good. I got the fundido, hubby’s food was okay. Service was slow, cheese dip was watery. Told them the avocado tasted soapy was still charged extra for it. ♀️
