Oof. I really wanted to like this place, but the experience was rough. Service was super slow even though it wasn’t busy. The chip bowl had maybe five chips and was TINY, the salsa was basically water, and the menu was messy and hard to read. Our drinks took forever and were just okay.

The food was the worst part. Bland, clearly store-bought, and very “white-washed.” My burrito meal was literally just pinto beans in a soft taco covered in cold shredded cheese and red sauce. For a small business, I hate to be harsh, but this was easily the worst Mexican food I’ve had. Not sure how it has such high ratings.

0 stars all they gave me was beans, for the house special, it didn’t say just beans it said everything that they didn’t include. I paid $41.71 for 7 bean tacos and 1 beef taco with rice with little beef on it and cheese beans, 1 watered down grand Margarita and 1 watered down Don Julio shot, definitely not worth it.

My mother contracted sepsis after dining at El Matador Cafe. She had to take an ambulance and go to the emergency room, and is now being hospitalized in intensive care for several days. It was determined that the cause of the infection was from dining here, not from the food, but either from cross contamination or poor cleanliness. This ordeal has caused our family a great deal of stress and uncertainty. No meal should ever put someone’s life at risk. I strongly hope this establishment will take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of their customers.

First off everyone was very friendly but this is not a restaurant so to speak.. it’s order at a window and eat in the bar next to it. None of the photos or menus posted are accurate. The cocktails at the bar were great. The food was barely edible. The beans were watery with store bought shredded cheese and the chili con queso was salsa with partial melted store bought shredded cheese. The rice tasted weird and had been sitting a while. Mostly went here based off the rave prior reviews and comments on how great and authentic Mexican food it was. Apparently WAS is the key word. I get no pleasure in this rating because everyone was really nice but the drinks were the only thing worth buying this trip.

First timer but we were with veterans who shared some history. Fun menu! Love that they’ve been in business so long through generations. Don’t expect oversized portions – each item is fairly small and SO good. It was fun being able to try several items. We didn’t mind the sound of the train across the street; the people at the bar were MUCH louder…
We’ll definitely be back, maybe try lunchtime.

I love El Matador and the Bullpen when they open for Northside Social. The person that complained about it not being a real restaurant is because they are currently remodeling and only have the Bullpen open. Very affordable food and margaritas, the spicy margarita is the best. Great North Lawrence mainstay.

My last visit was 1964. My parents visited when I was a Freshman at KU. My father was very critical of substandard meals but he loved the food here and we returned several times. The current owners can be proud of their traditions. I ordered one of the “named” specialties that included several samples items. I enjoyed them all as well as a Margarita. I’ll be back much sooner next time!

I’ve been eating here since 1972. That’s 3 generations of the Reyes family’s cooking. It has never changed, still the same delicious home cooked Mexican food I grew up with and missed the entire 34 years we were away. Our favorite Mexican Restaurant. Nicest folks around. Thanks Raquel for keeping it going.

Worst dining experience i have had in a while. We got a laughable amount of complementary chips to split between 5 people. The margarita I got was definitely just sweet and sour mix and ice cubes, no sign of my good friend tequila. Our server did a good job, very very friendly. The food was just plain bad, basic, and bland. Not cheap either. I have never gone out of my way to review a restaurant before but the rating on this place is too high. We were the ONLY people there 630 pm on a Thursday for a reason.
