I would like to give it a 3 1/2 star rating but I can’t.
The food unfortunately was tasteless to most of us.
I ordered the Pancakes with egg, bacon & potatoes. The only thing I enjoyed was my pancakes.. those were good but a little cold. My potatoes were dry and cold.. the egg was like an egg substitute, flavorless. My bacon was very crispy again no flavor.
The caldo had no flavor, no cabbage in it either
& small portions for the price.
The tacos were ok I guess . The mini pancakes well they were just small for the price. The food got eaten we were all hungry! The waiter never checked up on us for refills. Took a while to get our drink order so we quickly ordered our food when he finally approached our table.
This was our 1st time there. Can’t say we would be returning. Sorry. Also, the ac vents are leaking nasty dirty water onto us or one of us and at the table. I made sure to move and mk sure the water doesn’t go in our food. Chips and salsa, small portion but the salsa was tasty.

Wonderfully authentic. Very reasonably priced and our waitress was very kind and worked the entire dining room while we were there. The Tacos Matamoros were great!
There’s plenty of street parking in the neighborhood, but only a couple of spaces at the tortillaria adjacent to the restaurant.
The two desert items on the board were out. So ask first, before you set you mouth to watering.

Service was very excellent. I ordered Chilaquiles and the were exceptional. Not only were they delicious, but the presentation was perfect. Served on traditional Mexican pottery. Somehow, a pottery coffee cup makes the coffee taste better. This place is a gem.

First time experience at this restaurant while visiting south padre , very authentic food and atmosphere. You may want to call ahead of time and see if they have what you want on their menu . Lived the chips and salsa and the starter Sopa was great . Def stop by and give this place a try !! Be patient and kind always .

The food was really good and the plates were well served. Everything on my plate was full of flavor and fresh tasting. Service was really good and fast, staff was super friendly and if you’re from out of town this is the place for authentic Mexican food. Love the dished food was served on. Coming back for sure.

Very disappointed with the food. My wife and I were vacationing in South Padre and came across El Jefe when looking for a place to eat. There were plenty of bad reviews, but also plenty of good reviews. I chose to dismiss the bad reviews as being “pickier” reviewers. My wife ordered the beef fajitas and I ordered the beef tacos. The beef fajitas couldn’t have been done any worse. The beef and accompanied veggies they were cold and tasted old. The beef was super chewy, my wife has to spit half of it out since she couldn’t swallow it. We were shocked how a supposedly authentic Mexican restaurant could make the worst fajitas we ever had (and we live in Texas, so we had our share of fajitas). My dish wasn’t as terrible, but the beef was cut into a tiny small pieces instead of a steak slice. Additionally, there were only one cook and one servant/cashier. When I went to pay, he asked how was the food. I told him it was cold and chewy, his response was okay!!! That’s it. If I were you, I would save yourself a big disappointment, but you have to decide for yourself if you want to take a chance

I’ve had the pleasure of eating there 3 times & each time was better than the last. I love this little gem by the ocean so much! The food is so fresh & tasty!! I love that they have breakfast all day as well. Sometimes you want to sleep in and still be able to grab some delicious breakfast at a sit down restaurant. This is the perfect place to do just that. Prices are very much affordable as well considering you’re next to the beach where almost everything is overpriced and bland. I really recommend you give this place a shot, maybe it’ll also be your go to spot when visiting SPI.

We ordered to go and picked it up, hot and ready to eat. The huevos rancheros was good. The chips were a little soggy in the other dish but we did take it to go. We’ll be going back.
