Wow! What a surprise! This is my new favorite restaurant in Chittenden County. Authentic, handmade Mexican cuisine. The handmade tortillas made using organic corn masa are a highlight of most dishes, but it’s clear they use high quality ingredients for everything and the folks in the kitchen are very skilled and cook with love and intention. Everything is flavorful, fresh and prepared to order. Food this good is very rare in restaurants – try it soon and visit often!

I stopped in for lunch on a Thursday and was so impressed! I ordered the taquitos and guacamole, and everything was incredibly fresh and flavorful. The lemonade was so tart and refreshing. I also got a side of refried beans for a 9-month-old, and the baby loved them.

The staff were warm and attentive, and the service was fast even though the restaurant was quite full. The space felt very welcoming and baby-friendly (though there’s just one high chair available).

Several other customers mentioned that they are regulars and recommended dishes for my next visit which is always a great sign! I’m so glad to have discovered this gem in Williston, and I’ll definitely be coming back to try more of the menu.

I had a wonderful meal at this authentic Oaxacan Mexican restaurant. The dining area is plain but the food is not. It is all freshly made, from mostly local and organic ingredients. The ribeye tacos and enchiladas were fantastic. I’ll definitely be coming back to El Comal.

Don’t expect to find all the common dishes you might find at traditional Mexican restaurants in the U. S. like burritos or chimichangas. What you will find is South Mexican regional home cooked recipes that are truly authentic and delicious. Their spicy mole sauce chicken entree is amazingly flavorful and satisfying. Their pazole soup is teaming with a complex medley of spices and flavors. They also have a wide range of South American beverages like a tart tamarind drink. Many of their appetizers and entrees come with warm, freshly cooked, handmade tortillas. Amazing salsa and freshly made guacamole makes this authentic Oxacana restaurant a unique dining experience you will want to keep coming back for.

El Comal is something different for the Burlington area. It’s not the small fancy tacos and cocktails that you get at El Cortijo, but it’s also not the big plates of *some variation of tortilla with meat cheese and vegetable* that you get at Casa Real / Casa Grande.

El Comal is serving legit Oaxacan Mexican food and it is excellent. I urge you to check this place out because it’s very easy to miss:

It’s unassumingly tucked into Taft’s corner Williston.
They don’t have a website with photos of the requisite food porn.
The space is pretty tiny.
(as of February when I visited):
Their decor is completely minimalist.
They don’t have a liquor license.

Everyone whines about not having authentic Mexican food in Vermont. This is it! I don’t know what else to say. The tortillas are hand made and you can immediately tell. We had the mole and the enfrijolada and they were excellent, with a complex flavor that Casa Real is not going to give you (although to be fair, they will give you a margarita the size of your head. I like them too). My only, singular complaint was that my black beans were a little cold by the time they arrived at the table. But even at lukewarm, they were miles better than the “I swear they just dumped it of out a can” black beans that I’ve had at El Gato.

Normally in Vermont, if you want Mexican food, you go to a restaurant filled with tacky decor and a ten plus page menu. The vibes are fun, but the food is meh at best.

El Comal is not the typical Vermont Mexican restaurant. The food menu is one page. While there may not be an overwhelming amount of options, they excel at what they offer. The food is excellent. It’s easily the best Mexican I’ve had outside of NYC.

The servers are friendly and the right amount of attentive. I ordered the cheese enchiladas and was asked if I was vegetarian (I am) and the server who took our order made note of that to ensure there were no issues. I’ve had problems with this at other places, so this made me feel good.

Speaking of feeling good, the margs? Strong, but full of flavor. Get a margarita. They’re worth every penny.
For how amazing and fresh the food is, it’s worth every penny. Don’t waste time at other places in the region. Eat here!

The food is out of this world. This is a hidden gem worthy of taking a side trip if you’re going to/from Burlington or just on the hunt for authentic cuisine.

Yes, I can see how some commenters may think this place has slow service, however, I think that comes from fast food mentality and is a little uncultured. Relax and enjoy some face to face connection with a friend or loved one while your FRESHLY prepared meal is cooking. Can’t wait? Order ahead!

We aren’t local, but if we were we would be back for date nights often. I really hope the locals find this little place and give it the love it deserves. We’ll be back next year!!

Amazing food, the service was friendly and the atmosphere was perfect. I could tell that the effort here was going into the food and not some jazzed up decor or phony theme. The no frills dining area reminded me of living in the south west and eating the most delicious Mexican food made authentically. I feel blessed to have this gem in our community and can’t wait to see the completed menu and cocktail selection when they are ready. An addition of this caliber provides an amazing alternative to our community’s selection of eateries. Bravo, and I look forward to many great meals here.
