Wow… what a disappointment… grew up eating ElChico…I don’t know if food quality got worse or my taste improved. Seems like one step above frozen tv dinner. Started with 3 for 2 meal…. ordered Chicken Jalapeño poppers… its some weird mush of chicken and Jalapeño….odd thing is you’re sharing so the amount.. in my mind should be 2 equal portions, but no its 5 poppers.
Think some of it is microwaved and out of a can. Enchilada sauce I think comes from a can you can buy at the store..
Plate was too hot to touch but food was luke warm….
Service was great….

Always good! Nancy is our star waitress of choice. Great Mexican food just the way you ask for it! What could be better?

I signed up for their newsletter/promotions emails and was nicely rewarded with a BOGO entree offer. That made me excited to go and see if I could find a new favorite dish!
Unfortunately even at half the normal price this restaurant is a one and done for me. Truly have never had worse Mexican. Low quality, ultra small portions (except the bag of chips that came with my to go order) AND NO FLAVOR! Salsa appeared like it came out of a can and was watered down but at least they chopped up some fresh onion and jalapenos to put in it.
Have a look at the photo. You can count about 5 tiny pieces of diced tomato and the 2 pretend burritos that were the size of a McDonald’s breakfast burritos had almost no meat and literally nothing more inside. The cheese sauce didn’t taste like cheese and sour cream sauce and taste like sour cream.
It was a to go order and only took me 7 minutes to get it home but it was cold. Not even a sign it was ever hot, like steam or water on the plastic. So rather than eat it cold I zapped it in the microwave. Definitely not a $15 per entree value.
The other entree was shrimp tacos. The shrimp was tasty but because everything was cold and I stuck it in the microwave for a little over 30 seconds the taco shells turned so chewy that they were barely chewable.

I first went to an El Chico when I was a kid in the 1970s. It was one of the early Mexican food chain. For many years it defined what I thought Mexican food should taste like. I went to this El Chico somewhat out of nostalgia. While there are now many other styles to choose from, eating here brought back the taste memory of my youth and I loved it! I got the “South of the Border Combo” which includes a beef enchilada, chicken enchilada and chicken taco. I enjoyed every item.

The food was excellent . It sits on the outside of the mall but you don’t get the mall feeling in the restaurant.

It was very nice and i just love the lady that cleans up the food off the table! I know this is super off topic but she would talk to us she was nice and I think she deserves more money than she gets because she is very good at cleaning and very nice to the customers so this is to the owner, tell that woman I was the child with my father and mexican grandmother! I think this place deserves 5 stars! Also i got cheese quesadillas.

Okay, honestly… the food is decent. It’s just that, the rice tasted so off-putting. I could not for the life of me figured out what the bad taste was but could only compare it to a wet grass smell or dirt or you taste some really weird sink water. It just tasted horrible. Other than that, their sopa pías are bomb.

Good, consistent tex-mex staples. Our local go-to when the need to feed hits. Far better than any type of fast food and better than many other tex-mex restaurants in the area. Reasonable prices , consistent food, and comfortable atmosphere all make for a pleasant dining experience. Unfortunately for all, the Brazos Mall has decided to give their store-front to another retailer, effectively putting El Chico out of business at the end of this year.
