I don’t eat any meat so I can’t speak for that but it get the vegetarian platter here and no exaggeration- it is one of my top 5 meals I’ve ever had living in the triangle for over a decade. The platter has soft and perfectly seasoned zucchini, potatoes, carrots as well as a small ear of corn, a salad with tomatoes, onions, and radishes! The beans and rice are incredible and the tostadas are also a great appetizer. I went to Guatemala this past year and coming here makes me want to return even sooner. They have a convenience store section and wonderful service. The servers typically don’t speak to you in English so make an effort in Spanish if you can. So glad this place exists. ❤️

Stopped here for lunch during Duke graduation weekend and everything was absolutely delicious. My family got the Plato Tipico Chapin, Camerones Al Ajo, Caldo de pata de res, (and one more dish that I’m forgetting) Highly recommend!

This is a fantastic spot for authentic Guatemalan food! We were recommended to go here by a friend and ordered a ton of food to try. Everything we had was delicious and the portions were huge! The value/price was also really good for what we got. We ordered ahead online and the food was ready in 20 minutes. They did accidentally mess part of the order up but what they included in the order was so good we didn’t even care. Inside there’s a pretty sizable market that sells not just food but also some other essentials – almost like a mini pharmacy. My FAVORITE thing was a little cart with tons of toppings and sauces you can take to go. This will be a new regular spot for us!

This place has the best tamales in the Triangle, hands down! They are huge, moist, and cooked in banana leaves! If you’ve never had Guatemalan, then try this place. You are in for a treat. I grew up eating this food in little hole in the wall places in California, and this place is the real deal. Totally authentic. All their food is excellent!! It’s always fresh, well seasoned, hot… In addition to the tamale, my go-to’s are the papusas, plantains, and pastelitos. This is family run – dad cooks, and a polite pack of young brothers and cousins are always very friendly, and always serve you with a smile. They also have a little store with lots of fun snacks, juices, sauces, etc. Go! Don’t even think about it. You’ll love it.

This place is definitely authentic! We ordered a multitude of meal options to get a good flavor of this restaurant’s roots. I ordered two options that was very similar to each other like the tamales. There were other dishes that were very similar to the tamales in terms of the masa corn meal and lard mixture. I also ordered a beef tostada that was luke warm. The plantains were cooked perfectly! We also ordered something that resembled a pancake, but it had beans and cheese in it and also a side of rice, that was Good! The rice had a really good Zest about it that was a nice change from the usual rice. All the food on the menu is made in house. Some desserts are from other places and some are made in house. The other side of this restaurant is a Guatamala grocery store. It has so many options! From medicine to chips to drinks, they have it all!

What a hidden gem. Authentic, casual and delicious are the first words that come to mind. We were on 15/501 in Durham running errands and I had El Chapin bookmarked for the longest time. It is in an unassuming shopping complex and we saw the Open sign from the parking lot. We went on a Saturday night at about 7:30pm and the restaurant was packed. It is a store and restaurant in one and really an authentic experience. The young gentleman running the counter gave us menus and when a table inside cleared up, he moved us there. The menu is very straightforward with meat dishes, daily specials (Seafood soup on Sundays, beef soup on Mondays, etc.) sides and has a few photos. We asked what was recommonded and La Parillada para dos was the perfect choice. It is a steaming cast iron plate for two with steak, pork, vegetables and chicken and is served with a plate of fresh iceberg lettuce, radishes, tomatoes, cucumbers and a slice of lime. You also get refried beans, the best rice I have ever had and homemade tortillas. The rice has a chicken flavor and yucca or cayote in it. The tables have a plastic casing and underneath you will find beautiful hand woven icons from Guatemala. You grab your silverware and hot sauces from the drink station.

The owner or manager was SO nice! The food was not bad. Unfortunately the day we were there was slow. It appeared the chicken was precooked or recooked, and was very dry.
