This place is a fantastic find that we wish we had discovered earlier. Don’t let the store-front appearance fool you; the food is incredibly flavorful. I’m not qualified to say if this is authentic Guatemalan cuisine but it definitely transported me to a different country. If you love bold flavors, this place is a must-try. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. We’ll definitely be returning for more!

This is my new favorite restaurant in Wake!
I’ve had 7-8 different items now and every are universally fantastic. Tonight, I got a bunch of a la carte items- a salsa tostada, pork tamale, sweet plantains, pupusas (one shrimp & one beef), and a beef pastelito. Every single item was incredibly well made and very flavorful. My favorite were the pupusas, which are by far the best I’ve ever had.
On top of that, the atmosphere is fantastic & the service is always great.

I usually like to eat at local restaurants twice before I write a review, but once was enough for El Chapin. We tried several different items from the menu and everything was really good. We’re looking forward to returning to enjoy more Guatamalan flavors.

The camarones en crema was amazing! I could eat the cream sauce by itself with the tortillas! Everything was fresh and flavorful. The rice was cooked to perfection the pollo A la plancha and the Pollo Loco were both satisfying. I took 2 bites of the plantains and was stuffed! If you want to get full and happy this is the place to go. They also have an assortment of cakes (carrot and tres leche) cheesecakes, churros and a plantain empanada(?) I’ll have to come back for those. One of Durham’s hidden gems *chef’s kiss*

This is my happy and comfort place. I come here – delicious fresh food with great portions, friendly staff, upbeat music but not in your ears like some places, people coming here having a good time. Oh did I mention they also have tropical fruit milkshakes!?
The restaurant is connected to the store – the the store is just delightful – separated by a plant wall, the store has marinated meat, delicious deserts, and other general goods. It’s fun to walk around and browse while waiting for the food.
The tamales is worth a try – moist and well stuffed with generous pickles. I only wish I have a bigger stomach!

El Chapin is great! We loved the tamales and the pollo en crema. The restaurant is also a bodega, and it was full of people. Very delicious and reasonably priced menu with tons of options, including vegetarian.

The food was good. It might depend on people’s tastes, though. Although the meal I ordered didn’t make much of an impression on me, I’m happy to go back and try something else. It was cool that they have an integrated store with all kinds of things such as ointments, chips, and soft drinks.
