I ordered the taco salad, and it was honestly disappointing. It was extremely small, I was done in about five bites. I’m currently on a diet, so this was one of the few options I could choose while eating out with friends and family, and it still wasn’t satisfying.
Overall, I didn’t feel like the quality or service matched other Mexican restaurants in the Northside area. Those spots are more highly rated for a reason, and after trying this location, I can definitely see why.
The menu looked promising. So we ordered dinner as well. My friend ordered the Parrilla el Mexicano, which had chicken, shrimp , carnitas & ribeye with peppers, onions & mushrooms served with refried beans, rice & salad. I ordered the Mole Poblano, which is a mole over chicken strips served with refried beans & rice.
Both of us were pretty disappointed when the food arrived. My friend’s dish came without any peppers, onions & mushrooms. Just meat on the pan, which wasn’t even sizzling. I’ve never gone to a Mexican restaurants & not heard the sizzle of fajitas as they are brought to the table. She had to ask for the peppers & stuff. (Strike 2)
When my food was put in front of me it didn’t look very appetizing at all. The sauce was very thin, not thick like a mole is supposed to be. And the chicken looked like it had been chopped up to within an inch of it’s life & trying to hide in the sauce. The rice was bland & the beans were grey. (Strike 3)
We ate a little bit of our meals. They were definitely subpar. The mole didn’t taste anything like a mole. And I was married to a Mexican man for the better party of 20 yrs, I know what a mole should taste like. My friend said her fajitas were just okay. She wouldn’t order them again if she ever went back.
To round out our experience, we ordered dessert, a chocochimi & a sopapilla with ice cream. To go. When we got home we tried the desserts. The sopapilla was flat & crispy. Which is not how a sopapilla is supposed to be. (Strike4) The Chocochimi was good tho. The saving grace of the meal.
In summation, El Cazador gets 3 out of 5⭐. They are not the authentic Mexican food they claim to be. When I asked my friend if she would ever go back to the restaurant, she said she most likely will not. There are better Mexican restaurants in town to choose from. I agree with that statement.
They knew the service was not.great and compted our meal. Loved the food. Try it.
