El Campesino: Authentic Mexican Flavor in McMurray
Reviews
What is going on with this place? Stopped in for lunch, and the food was absolutely AWFUL!!!
Ordered two lunch specials. One featured a Chile Relleno and Taco. The Chile Relleno came as half of a boiled green bell pepper filled with unseasoned ground beef. What happened to the Poblano pepper? To the egg batter? To seasoning anything?
The taco was cold. We sent it back. The waiter brought another one over right away. That tells me they were already made and sitting in the kitchen. At least in this one, the chicken was warm. On the other hand, it was also tasteless. It was apparently cooked in water and then shredded. Hello!? Flavors are needed!!!!
The other special featured a chicken burrito stuffed with the same flavorless chicken filling and nothing else. There was a red sauce on top of the burrito. The special also came with a bean tostada. Again, where was the seasoning?
The most flavorful part of the meal were the complimentary chips and salsa provided when we sat down. Thankfully there were three hot sauce bottles on the table as half of one of them went into our two dishes.
The server was good and handled the cold taco appropriately. He checked on us frequently and I cannot blame him for bad kitchen practices.
With food this terrible, we are not planning on coming back.

Sept 2021 update — Bottom line, this is a new location that’s been open for three weeks when we visited. The staff is very welcoming and friendly. The food is the same as it was.
With the new location having opened up, we gathered a few friends, and tried it out. As mentioned above, this is the same place, just moved slightly northwards. They took over an existing building and made a few changes to it. The biggest one was that they took out the wall that used to separate the bar from the parking lot and replaced it with three garage doors. This made the bar area much more open and bright. It also allows for rolling up the doors to allow for fresh air to come in and to give the appearance of outdoor seating when the weather allows. Other than that, they only replaced the furnishings and repainted the interior, so if you were familiar with what it looked like before, you will find your way with no problems.
The servers were quick, efficient, personable and friendly. There were almost no delays even though the place was packed. There was one miscommunication on the salsa, but it was quickly taken care of by our main server, so this does not even rate a complaint.
The food? Since there were five of us, we each ordered different things from different parts of the menu. While we were not exactly disappointed, this was the same menu and the same dishes as the previous location had. It is not bad, but it’s not the best in town. It is also far better than some other places I can name, so this is not a knock on them by any means.
Our total bill came to $30 per person which included the meal, margaritas and tip. Not too bad. It was interesting to note though, that they charge $1.50 for each additional basket of tortilla chips beyond the first complimentary one. Hmmm….
2017 — All the standards In an expansive menu. Service is very nice. But the food quality is just average.
Uncomfortable and the food made me sick. Currently have food poisoning and thrown up. Save your money pretty expensive also considering the food is not good. The man who works here needs to take basic courtesy classes. As someone
Who is Mexican, not my own people disrespecting me.
I wish I could give 0 stars.
Poor quality and overpriced!
Very friendly and efficient staff. Good choices on menu. Portion size was good. Excellent desserts – Churro with ice cream and Fried Ice cream were amazing.
Entrance and seating were conveniently accessible by wheel chair. Restroom were a little challenging to access with electric wheel chair. Too many sharp turns and tight spaces.
