Mexican favorites & margaritas served in a relaxed, pub-like setting with a colorful tiled bar.

FOOD was amazing some of the best beans and rice I’ve ever had from a restaurant! Wish the portions were a little bit bigger, but they were. Everything was really good.

As you settle in to watch your favorite NCAA, NBA or NFL team hoop it or Down it why not take a break and savor some good salacious enchiladas, guacamole or a mouth watering chimichanga at El Barco on Hickman. The ambiance is soothing with authentic music in the background. The wait staff is efficient, professional and very customer oriented in serving up your order. The price is very reasonable and there is plenty of parking to get you in and out. It’s time to take a break and go grab a scrumptious meal that is bountiful and out of bounds tasty with a full festive bar.

Ordered a smaller order for carry out. Was packaged and ready when I walked into the door. A very nice atmosphere. One dish was the seafood enchiladas and was very good. We don’t typically order anything with seafood more than 4 hours from the coast, but this dish was really good, as we’re the others. There are some fees for carry out, so check before you pick up. Very good service, good food, good price for the size and quality.

Great food here. Carnitas tacos, shrimp ceviche, fish ceviche, birra tacos have all been very good. Tasty margaritas!! Their staff is always engaging and I enjoy speaking a lil Spanish w them.

Friendly attentive staff. Great tasting food, including the salsa which can be bland elsewhere. Fast service. The single door lets cold air in during winter which can make your legs/feet a bit chilly. The holiday lights were festive.

Atmosphere, service, mixed drinks and food will all disappoint. In 1/4 full restaurant, were seated by the restroom next to a couple with a screaming kid. Ordered what turned out to be the weakest Margareta that we have ever had (some pricey Gold Marg that just tasted like Orange Juice). On my combo plate, started out by paying $7 just for a plop of refried beans and a bit of rice. We had to leave early because firefighters, ambulance and police came in to resuscitate an older woman who tragically may have been dead for about 10 minutes.

El Barco Mexican Restaurant is one of our all-time favorites in the Des Moines area. Staff is great, the food is always excellent, drinks are well priced especially the shaker margaritas!
Update: Every time we visit El Barco, we just like it even more! Momia Shrimp are great!

Amazing! I have driven by here a hundred times but today decided to stop. All the signs were there indicating a good place to eat, for instance, the parking lot is always full. Anyway, I ordered my usual at a Mexican restaurant. Tacos carnal asada and an ice tea. Simple food but a good gauge of the quality and care taken when preparing it and serving it. The chips and salsa were good, the ice tea tasted like ice tea which was refreshing. The tacos were very good, the meat perfectly cooked and tender with no gristle. The red sauce was spot on with the perfect amount of spice. The cup of pinto beans was a good companion to the meal. No cheese in site which spoke volumes on the quality. I highly recommend and will be back.

Went to dinner with family, first time here. Try their mango margarita, came in a huge glass, taste great too. Also have their seafood with tilapia and seafood platters. They are huge portion, you can share with other but my bro ate one by himself. Seafood plater is spicy and salty. Tacos are safe bet if you don’t want to try spicy foods.

We went here on Cinco de Mayo last year for my birthday, middle of the day. Ton of staff around but our service was poor. Food was mid and although our drinks didn’t seem to have much alcohol in them, the table next to us didn’t seem to have that issue. Only other people in the restaurant and they were obnoxiously drunk and rowdy in the middle of the day. Won’t be going back.
