First time eating at this restaurant. Food was excellent and very fresh. Chips and salsa were great, could taste the cilantro and had a smoky flavor. Chips were not greasy. Ask for the house hot sauce/salsa, very good. All the meals we had were tasty, and there was a lot of food. Margarita was disappointing, seemed like it was missing Tequila and was too sweet (That is why the 4 star rating). Next time I will get a beer. Will definitely eat there again!

We saw an ad for this restaurant on Going Gainesville by Lesley Salman, the realtor, so we thought, ‘Let’s try this place in Bristow.’ We went there for the first time and ordered a couple of different items. However, they all tasted just okay, and the service was okay as well. I believe El Tio in Gainesville is much better than this one, so we’ll just go back to El Tio.

This is a review for El Agave in Bristow, VA.

The restaurant was at the end of a strip mall. The restaurant has a large banner on one side, which could be seen from the major road, outside of the strip mall. The parking area was very compact and small.

The exterior of the restaurant was clean, yet somehow seemingly desolate. The restaurant has large windows which could have been utilized for advertising or props to attract customers to the location, but it was left bare and plain. This location has 2 doors where you can enter the building – the main entrance and a side patio about 15 ft away around the side. The restaurant has a nice covered and lit patio, that could seat 12-16 people.

Inside the restaurant it was well lit and clean. Two things I really like about this restaurant’s interior was that the music was kept at a reasonable volume and the restrooms were clearly marked, high up on the ceiling, with a large arrow for everyone to see. There’s nothing worse than going to a restaurant and wandering around like a drunk duck trying to find where they hid the bathroom in some corner somewhere. The bathrooms at this location were clean. They were single occupant gender separated restrooms with modern appliances. Auto-flush toilets, sinks, and soap dispensers.

Now on to the part we’re all here for:
The food and service was decent. I was not “Wow!”-ed by the food.. it was just bare minimum what you would expect… Nothing special. When I went here, I got the “Fajitas Texana”, which consisted of steak, chicken, shrimp, onions, peppers, and a side of flour tortillas, sour cream, Mexican rice, refried beans, guacamole, lettuce and tomato. Honestly, I would have preferred an option for a tray of just sour cream, lettuce, tomato and cheese. The meat seasoning was right at the level of almost barely being there, right on the low end of pleasantly there, but tasted good… The onions and peppers were in large supply, apparently, because that was 50+% of the tray. The meat was sliced thin and was quite good. I only wish there was more of it, especially for the $19+ paid for it… Since I’m not a huge fan of peppers, I was able to get 2 tortillas filled with what meats were supplied. It was a good meal, and I left happy. The chips and salsa at the beginning of the meal was very nice. The chips were corn-based chips. The salsa has just enough heat in it to be pleasant and not bland. Usually I don’t partake in ANY spicy foods, and I thought it was good.

The service was decent. In my opinion it was a bit slow. I was one of the less than 5 people in the place for a late lunch time (after 2:30pm) meal. It was ten minutes of staring at the same menu before the order was taken. It is quite a large menu though, so I would understand that they get a lot of people who don’t know what they’re hungry for asking them to come back in a bit. I stayed for about an hour and was only checked on twice. It would have been nice to have gotten a second drink, since mine was low and had to be paced, but I wasn’t too fussed about not getting another one. The music was a great selection of traditional music, tuned to just the right volume. Not too loud, not too quiet.

It’s a great place to go to if you want to be left alone and have a decent quiet ordinary meal with no extravagance or frills.

Tastes like all American Mexican restaurant but it was good. Birria taco is always a safe choice.

I almost didn’t go here based on other reviews about it being a hit or miss restaurant. But I’m glad I did. Because they had great service and delicious food. I must have experienced a “hit” night. Leon S. was my server and she was awesome. I’ll definitely go back!

Food and service was amazing. The michelada was very good I ask for less tomato juice and they made it perfect. Botana appetizer was delicious. I don’t like onion and ask for onions on the side for my husband and they did it. Again food was delicious. Definitely going again. I recommend this place.

Sal-T! Whew! Think i got my portion of sodium for the rest of the month! Wasn’t anything mind blowing, basically cooked beef in a wrap covered with enchilada sauce and cheese. However, the burrito and chips were only $4.44! What?! Definitely a great deal for so much food. The atmosphere is also very happy and celebratory! However, due to the plainness of flavor, i probably won’t return.

It is literally the worst Mexican restaurant ever. The food was too salty, drinks were horrible. Chips and salsa were bland. If you live near by then Cinco de Mayo is 10x better than this restaurant. Don’t know how it’s rating can be 4.5

If you don’t want a big read, to sum it up: Only come to this place when it is after rush dinner time and you will have an excellent experience!

This was our third visit to this restaurant. Up until today we have been exceedingly satisfied with their food and service. Tonight must have been an off day or maybe perhaps they can’t yet handle a busy rush hour around dinner time as this was the first time we got there at 6:00pm.

To reflect on the service we received tonight I’m not quite sure where to begin…
Upon walking in the hostess who greeted us was wearing a fleece which did not show any kind of company name so we were very unsure if she worked there or not. She was also awkward in her customer service, for a lack of a better word. As we watched her seat tables she rarely walked people over but instead just pointed and sent them on their way. However, she did step in to help with taking our order as the waitresses who were working seemed completely lost and not in control.

The waitresses as I mentioned were not in control as we watched several meals come out that were walked around to different tables and then in the end be brought back to the kitchen. Once we were seated, or really once we found a table, it took over 40 minutes for them to take our order which made the hostess step in to do their job for them. I also witnessed how one of the waitresses backtalked to the hostess as she tried to get her to come and take our orders. That is something I find completely unacceptable and inexcusable!
A huge kudos should go to the waitress they called in around 6:40pm as she completely steered up everything and got things under control and running smoothly!

Once we received our food after a long wait, my food was absolutely delicious. If I am to be picky the beef could have been a little more juicy, but still very flavorful! My husband who is not a stranger to spicy food would have liked his with a bit more of a kick to it as he ordered the Camarones Diablo (spelling??) and only found them to be mild at most.

We both ordered two margaritas but there were a significant difference in the amount we received in our glasses even though we both ordered the same size.

I will stop complaining now.. All in all this is a very pleasant restaurant to go to when it is not busy!
We will be back again as we do thoroughly enjoy their food, just only after 7:30 though!

The pictures are from our first and second time we went here (as you can see from the empty seats, which was not the case for tonight)

Love all the branches of El Agave!! For me the best Mexican food for one who’s not particularly a fan of Mexican food. But authentic food.
