Our server was great. She was VERY friendly and eager to help. Our table of six was the only one the entire time we were there so service was fast.
The food has really taken a down turn. I ordered a BBQ Pork Egg Roll, and a couple others ordered the combo platter. There was nothing BBQ about the egg roll and the others said all the egg rolls they received were the same. Though I like the way they serve the rice and entre separate so you can build it yourself on your plate, the Sweet and Sour Chicken was not sweet. It was actually spicy.
This was definitely a disappointment.
Nestled in a modest strip mall, The Egg Roll House is the kind of hidden gem that surprises you in the best way possible. I walked in with tempered expectations and left with a taste memory that reached decades into the past.
From the moment I arrived, Wendy made me feel welcome, asking where I’d like to sit before handing me the menu. She casually asked what kind of egg rolls I wanted—because they’re made fresh on the spot. I couldn’t decide, so I tried both shrimp and chicken. Absolute perfection. Crispy, flavorful, and paired with a sweet and sour sauce that struck a flawless balance. The hot mustard? Old-school, sinus-clearing goodness—the kind of fiery kick that’s hard to find these days.
Then came the sweet and sour pork—and with it, a blast from my childhood. I’ve spent years searching for the version I had as a kid at a tiny restaurant in Waukegan, Illinois. Nothing ever came close… until this. Crunchy on the outside, tender and savory on the inside, this pork dish brought me right back to that cherished flavor. While I did miss the classic pineapple, tomato, and onion medley, the dish was still unforgettable.
If you’re anywhere near West Allis, do yourself a favor—seek out The Egg Roll House. Eat, savor, and tell Wendy that Julie says hi. You won’t regret it.
Give Egg Roll House a try, give the salt and pepper chicken a try, and ask the folks there what they recommend. Everyone there is so sweet, I love this place.
