Reviews
The drink menu adds to the fun with a great mix of cocktails and beers, including the Rhubarb Gin Fizz.
With its chilled, easygoing vibe, Ed’s is an easy place to settle in—and we’re already looking forward to coming back to try their ever-evolving small plates menu.
Everything looked and tasted FANTASTIC!! Kudos on the wedge salad with the most wonderful house ranch dressing I’ve ever had. As I usually opt for a vinegarette based salad, this little wedge was packed full of fresh lettuce, crispy bacon (which may be locally sourced) tomatos blue cheese and of course the signature house ranch. The tomato soup was sprinkled with Parmesan and felt like a hug on the wet and gloomy day. I’ll let my friend review her own sandwhich, but she was happy to take half of it back to the office and have it for lunch tomorrow. She also devoured the butterscotch pudding as her sweet treat.
Is it worth the stop? Yes. Is it worth the price? EMPHATICALLY YES.
The Turkey Sandwich:
Although, the turkey sandwich falls under their “cold sandwiches” part of the menu, I was pleasantly surprised to find the focaccia (freshly made everyday) had been warmed. This made the cold sandwich even better. The pesto and tomatoes were placed on top of the turkey with a healthy amount of pesto and enough tomato to be present but not make the bread slide off (which I find happens at other places). The turkey is freshly sliced off the bird each day and you get a lot of it. The freshness and moistness of the turkey was perfect. The mozzarella (thick sliced) is placed on the bottom of the sandwich on top of the mayo, which caught me off guard as I always have the cheese on top. But the placement of everything made sense. The mayo, on the bottom, kept the cheese in place while the turkey (now on top of the cheese) was there, along with the top slice of focaccia, to absorb all the flavors of the pesto, tomatoes, and vinaigrette.
The 1/2 Wedge Salad:
The salad was just as enjoyable. Although it was a 1/2 salad, it was big enough for me and preferred over the regular chips. With lots of bacon and bleu cheese crumble, I found myself slicing the wedge into perfect squares so I could make sure to get a bit of everything in each bite. The tomatoes were diced and the red onions were… well, to be honest, I can’t remember what the red onions were like, because I was so focused on the bacon and bleu cheese. Ed’s make their own ranch dressing, which I really enjoyed… and I am not a big fan of ranch dressing. All together, the salad was great. I just took a look of a photo of their full wedge salad and, boy, do they top you with lots of bacon (as if Crown Candy made wedge salads).
FOOD:
The sandwich and salad was a big enough meal that I ended up taking half the sandwich home for a later meal. Overall, I would give this combination of meal a 5 out of 5. And lets hope they find a way to get a big enough fryer in their kitchen to make their own amazing sides instead of having the simple “bag of chips” as the only option without a price increase.
SERVICE:
I was not there during peak hours so I am not sure how the serves would be when they are busy and, to me, that is the true test of a restaurant, so 4 out of 5 seems fair. That being said, Todd was my server and he was great. He even took the time to answer all my questions about the place and it’s services. Because he knew so much about the place, I assumed he was one of the owners. It turns out, he is not. Instead, he is a great server who clearly cares about the place and has a impressive work ethic.
ATMOSPHERE:
The atmosphere I did find wanting. For a to-go order or to drop-in to purchase one of their freshly made desserts or wrapped sandwiches, the entrance looks great. It has a classic deli feel to it, from the outside awning, right down to the black and white checkerboard flooring. The restaurant side of Ed’s still hasn’t found itself yet. It has a nice big bar (not sure why a buck is hung on the wall behind it), a big TV on the wall at the bar, several bare tables, white walls with no artwork or pictures up, and a single, lonely neon sign in the window. I would have given a 5 out of 5 when I first walked in, but a 3 out of 5 score shows how lacking the restaurant side is at the moment.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
If you want fresh, good, food, for an honest price (and that’s coming from someone who calls places out all the time for being overly expensive), try Ed’s Delicatessen. If the price scares you, bring a friend and split a sandwich. I promise you, you both will be back and eating the whole sandwich on your own next time.
Oh! And the meal comes with a pickle spear. 🙂
The sandwiches are huge and pack a full punch of so much delicious flavor! I ordered the Reuben, my friends ordered the Turkey on Focaccia & Roast Beef sandwich and they were all AMAZING! For sides we got the cucumber salad and olive salads.. def recommend everything on the menu! Important tip: save room for dessert
The staff was super helpful and service was very fast. The ambiance is very welcoming.
Can’t wait to go back!
Update – we’ve been here several times now and each time we are blown away by the delicious food , cocktails, and service. This is one of the top spots in Edwardsville for sure.
