Eat a Lao is serving some of the best Laotian food in the state. It is a humble spot but the flavors are bright, bold, and impressive.
My party of two went for Sunday lunch and the place stayed busy the entire time we were there. Always a good sign. The dining room is nicely laid out with plenty of seating for both small and larger groups. We were next to a table of eight who were clearly enjoying their meal but there was still plenty of space between tables so nothing felt cramped.
The menu is huge. You can use a physical copy or scan the QR code, which I actually recommend because the digital version has photos of every dish. With this many options it is honestly hard to choose because everything sounds amazing. We decided to go all in and try a bit of everything.
We ordered the Bermuda Triangles, Crispy Chive Cakes, Grilled Mussels, Laotian Papaya Salad, Kua Kua Noodles, Lao Wings, and the Hainanese Braised Beef Noodle Soup. For drinks we got the Sweet Tiger Taro Milk Tea and the Black Tie Coffee Milk Tea.
First off, the milk teas are fantastic. Easily some of the best in the area. They even offer all of their teas in pitcher format for the table, which tells you how popular they are.
Food wise, the Kua Kua Noodles were a standout. It is a large format dish loaded with stir fried wide rice noodles, chicken, grilled whole squid, shrimp, egg, lettuce, preserved radish, scallion, soy sauce, and crispy pastry strips. Tons of texture and big savory flavor in every bite.
The Hainanese Braised Beef Noodle Soup was also excellent. XL Vietnamese vermicelli noodles, tender beef chunks, pickled green mustard, cilantro, scallion, peanut, sesame seeds, and a rich thickened beef broth. Comforting but still layered and complex.
And do not skip the Laotian Papaya Salad. Shredded green papaya tossed with chili, green bean, eggplant, lettuce, pork rind, sunflower seeds, tomato, shrimp paste, and tamarind dressing. It hits fiery, tart, sweet, and deeply umami all at once. Everything can be customized for heat level, so you can go mild or crank it up.
Service was great. Food came out at a steady pace and we never felt rushed. Prices are very reasonable for the portion sizes and quality.
Overall, Eat a Lao absolutely deserves a spot on your short list. Big flavors, generous portions, great drinks, and a lively atmosphere. We will definitely be back.
Good first try. We had a great experience with 3 out of 4 dishes: drunken noodles, 10 tail zucchini and candied pork.
The drunken noodles were a delicious, veg forward version of the traditional Thai dish. Quite spicy, like we like it. Sometimes restaurants dumb down their heat. I’m glad they did not!
The 10-tail zucchini is one of their stir fries. Really, really nice. Delicate flavor, plenty of shrimp and the zucchini cooked to perfection – not crunchy or soggy.
The candied pork was the big surprise! Even the server said he didn’t prefer it, but it sounded good, so we went for it. Sundried pork, fried and sauced. Think candied bacon. It was great!
I’ll get photos the next time!
The restaurant does get busy during peak hours, so expect a bit of a wait for your food, but it’s worth it once it arrives. Staff were friendly and helpful. Free parking available right in front of the restaurant. Overall, a tasty and satisfying experience.
Their coconut sugar cane drink tasted good and very refreshing. You could order in a bucket size. You should try it.
We tried the papaya salad and ribs. We requested the salad extra spicy and were not disappointed. The ribs were good- tender, juicy and flavorful.
The staff is laid back, polite, and professional. They will offer suggestions if asked.
We hope to return to try other dishes and to see what Lao spicy level is like.
start off w the Laotian papaya salad. a very generous portion w the perfect amount of spice (didn’t want to ruin my whole meal just in case I couldn’t handle it!). fresh, crunchy, flavorful. I do wish it was a tad more of the fermented flavor exuding from it but that may be too much for foreigners.
the ping (some places has it as piing) pork shoulder was absolutely delicious. every piece was coated w rich, savory & sweetness that paired so well w the sticky rice – wish the rice portion was bigger! I could eat that all day!
topped it off w the traditional Thai iced tea in a visibly appealing goblet. makes it feel like a sturdy, strong drink even though it gets gulped down in 2 sips!
overall: I’d make an excuse just to come down to this area again for the food. the menu has so much to try and I would relish in more opportunities to do so! highly recommend!
note – entrance is located on side of big building complex w ample parking in rear. off of main street
