I pulled up on a randomly snowy Friday afternoon leaving work. I was missing the southeast Asian flavors that I have t had since moving back to MoCo and searched for any local Laos or Thai spot. Already filled with great reviews, I was hype to come across Eat A Lao. For the time I arrived, it was empty and quiet with a staff that was welcoming and accommodating! The menu was extensive with options for your own heat choice (definitely wish I went hotter) that all can accommodate your palate. The curry pastries were perfect and flaky, the crab rice cooked to perfection and filled with tender pieces of crab, the Muay Thai beer was a refreshing addition to the end of a work week and the wings were EXTREMELY flavorful. I’m excited to come back and fully explore the menu!

TLDR: Bold flavorful Laotian food, awesome milk teas, big portions, and super reasonable prices. Eat a Lao is absolutely worth the visit.

Eat a Lao is serving some of the best Laotian food in the state. It is a humble spot but the flavors are bright, bold, and impressive.

My party of two went for Sunday lunch and the place stayed busy the entire time we were there. Always a good sign. The dining room is nicely laid out with plenty of seating for both small and larger groups. We were next to a table of eight who were clearly enjoying their meal but there was still plenty of space between tables so nothing felt cramped.

The menu is huge. You can use a physical copy or scan the QR code, which I actually recommend because the digital version has photos of every dish. With this many options it is honestly hard to choose because everything sounds amazing. We decided to go all in and try a bit of everything.

We ordered the Bermuda Triangles, Crispy Chive Cakes, Grilled Mussels, Laotian Papaya Salad, Kua Kua Noodles, Lao Wings, and the Hainanese Braised Beef Noodle Soup. For drinks we got the Sweet Tiger Taro Milk Tea and the Black Tie Coffee Milk Tea.

First off, the milk teas are fantastic. Easily some of the best in the area. They even offer all of their teas in pitcher format for the table, which tells you how popular they are.

Food wise, the Kua Kua Noodles were a standout. It is a large format dish loaded with stir fried wide rice noodles, chicken, grilled whole squid, shrimp, egg, lettuce, preserved radish, scallion, soy sauce, and crispy pastry strips. Tons of texture and big savory flavor in every bite.

The Hainanese Braised Beef Noodle Soup was also excellent. XL Vietnamese vermicelli noodles, tender beef chunks, pickled green mustard, cilantro, scallion, peanut, sesame seeds, and a rich thickened beef broth. Comforting but still layered and complex.

And do not skip the Laotian Papaya Salad. Shredded green papaya tossed with chili, green bean, eggplant, lettuce, pork rind, sunflower seeds, tomato, shrimp paste, and tamarind dressing. It hits fiery, tart, sweet, and deeply umami all at once. Everything can be customized for heat level, so you can go mild or crank it up.

Service was great. Food came out at a steady pace and we never felt rushed. Prices are very reasonable for the portion sizes and quality.

Overall, Eat a Lao absolutely deserves a spot on your short list. Big flavors, generous portions, great drinks, and a lively atmosphere. We will definitely be back.

Second time perfection! We went back for the candied pork, and it did not disappoint. At the recommendation of our waitress, we ordered the Kua Kua noodles to share. AWESOME!! (And very large – we are stuffed!)

Good first try. We had a great experience with 3 out of 4 dishes: drunken noodles, 10 tail zucchini and candied pork.

The drunken noodles were a delicious, veg forward version of the traditional Thai dish. Quite spicy, like we like it. Sometimes restaurants dumb down their heat. I’m glad they did not!

The 10-tail zucchini is one of their stir fries. Really, really nice. Delicate flavor, plenty of shrimp and the zucchini cooked to perfection – not crunchy or soggy.

The candied pork was the big surprise! Even the server said he didn’t prefer it, but it sounded good, so we went for it. Sundried pork, fried and sauced. Think candied bacon. It was great!

I’ll get photos the next time!

Eat A Lao is a great spot for flavorful Lao cuisine. I especially enjoyed the fried fish and the 4000 Island curry — both were delicious and packed with unique flavors. Most dishes lean on the spicier side, but you can ask them to tone it down if you prefer.

The restaurant does get busy during peak hours, so expect a bit of a wait for your food, but it’s worth it once it arrives. Staff were friendly and helpful. Free parking available right in front of the restaurant. Overall, a tasty and satisfying experience.

This is a solid place and a gem in Rockville & MoCo as they are the first restaurant to serve Laotian food. Their fried fish tofu is my go to app: it is delicately made and on point. Had their Lao khao soi for the first time and the freshness and quality of spare ribs and minced pork are top notch. Service can be slow as there is typically only one server working at lunch and I feel that they should have one more server as service can be slow at times. A huge bonus that they are on the AA dining program.

There are so many choices on the menu that both intriguing and confusing. The food is unique but taste wise, it’s very subjective. The taste is similar to Thai food, but the certain spices that distinguished them.

Their coconut sugar cane drink tasted good and very refreshing. You could order in a bucket size. You should try it.

Hidden gem with an extensive menu featuring Laotian, Thai, Vietnamese dishes. I also noted Laksa on the menu, a soup often associated with Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia.

We tried the papaya salad and ribs. We requested the salad extra spicy and were not disappointed. The ribs were good- tender, juicy and flavorful.

The staff is laid back, polite, and professional. They will offer suggestions if asked.

We hope to return to try other dishes and to see what Lao spicy level is like.

Dining here was a truly enjoyable experience, elevated by the exceptional service. The dishes were expertly prepared, showcasing culinary creativity and fresh ingredients. While the seasoning was slightly more pronounced than my personal preference, the flavors were still delightful. The staff’s warm hospitality created a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. From the moment we arrived until we departed, we felt well-cared for and appreciated. This establishment clearly prioritizes customer satisfaction, and it shows. Overall, it was a memorable meal and a place I would happily recommend to others.

The dancing pork belly with Chinese broccoli is incredible. The meat is almost carmelized and cooked to perfection, both sweet and savory and the plate is well balanced in dimension with green broccoli and rice. The names of the dishes here are hilarious. We were served very quickly and the staff is helpful, courteous, and fast. Our server Summer was delightful!! The restaurant’s metal silverware is original. The bathrooms are clean and the tables are well lit to see food clearly. It can get a bit echoey at the table because the floors are tile but this did not detract from my experience. I am from out of town and will be sure to come back when I visit to repeat this dish!!

outstanding! not many Laotian/Thai restaurants that does it well but this is establishment definitely checked off all the marks. from the friendly service to the spacious seatings to the moderate cultural decor to the cleaned/well kept bathrooms to the food w it’s presentations and preparations.

start off w the Laotian papaya salad. a very generous portion w the perfect amount of spice (didn’t want to ruin my whole meal just in case I couldn’t handle it!). fresh, crunchy, flavorful. I do wish it was a tad more of the fermented flavor exuding from it but that may be too much for foreigners.

the ping (some places has it as piing) pork shoulder was absolutely delicious. every piece was coated w rich, savory & sweetness that paired so well w the sticky rice – wish the rice portion was bigger! I could eat that all day!

topped it off w the traditional Thai iced tea in a visibly appealing goblet. makes it feel like a sturdy, strong drink even though it gets gulped down in 2 sips!

overall: I’d make an excuse just to come down to this area again for the food. the menu has so much to try and I would relish in more opportunities to do so! highly recommend!

note – entrance is located on side of big building complex w ample parking in rear. off of main street
