Duke’s in Dodgeville is one of my absolute favorite spots. The owner is super nice, and the bartenders are always friendly, fast, and fun to talk to. I’m there every Thursday for trivia (I’m the trivia host!), and they are always so kind and accommodating, really doing their best to make sure everything runs smoothly and everyone has a good time. The drinks are fantastic and consistently well-made. The interior is really cool — it has kind of an art deco vibe, it’s clean, and it feels like a place you actually want to hang out for a while. They bring in bands and have different activities going on, so there’s usually something happening. Parking is easy too: you can usually find a spot on the street, and if not, there’s a public parking lot right across the street, which makes it super convenient. Highly recommend stopping in at Duke’s if you’re in Dodgeville.

My sister, our husbands and I were here on Saturday around five. They have a good selection of drinks including a few ciders which my husband likes. After checking out the menu we decided to eat and it was really good. I especially liked the wings. My husband and brother in law had both hotdogs on special and they really enjoyed them. Josh behind the bar was the perfect mix of mouthy and good at his job. He entertained us and made sure we had everything we needed.

To the tl:dr crowd: Great food (fresh burgers, fries, etc. cooked when you order…not fast food). Cold beer, good atmosphere, great bartender Josh*.
*Now I get to define my word “Great”.
I read the mixed reviews of this bar when my wife and I visited with my brother and his wife. The bad reviews dwelled on the poor service. With this in mind we had dinner at Duke’s. I spoke with Josh, the bartender. He indicated that there was just him and the cook working, so it would be awhile before he could take our food order. I asked if I could just write down what we wanted to have; he agreed.
After a few minutes with the order pad, I took our order to Josh. After about ten minutes the food arrived. My hamburger was rare; exactly how I ordered it. My wife, who is rather picky about her food, enjoyed it. Ditto for my brother and wife. Josh came over after a few minutes to see how our dinners were. Excellent. Also, we left a generous tip.
Finally, I get to reveal my spin on restaurant experiences. Part of the enjoyment of going out to eat comes from interaction with the bartender, waiter, waitress and hosts. The staff aims at making your experience as pleasant as possible; however, you have to do your part. If you are expecting too much, don’t like to tip (…with a bartender, I try to tip early and often…), or complain about every detail, not only will you have a difficult night out, but the help just might throw you out (…Last call already? But it’s only 11 pm!…).
A while back I was a waiter. Working for tips is not fun, especially when my customers are belligerent. I marvel at people who would spend $20 or more for parking in Chicago would be so cheap when it comes to spreading some wealth on the restaurant staff.
Here, at Duke’s, we were determined to take our time, interact with Josh, take our own order and make it worth Josh’s time with generosity. We had a great night.
I don’t like to be preachy. However, I find that people forget that restaurant staff are there to serve, but they are not your slaves. If you just want to bark orders to the staff, then have a terrible experience….well, what did you expect?

This is a great place to grab a burger and beer. The burger was very good and I think even fresh beef, the fries were perfectly crispy on the outside and pillowy in the middle. And they have a good rotating draft selection plus lots of cans/bottles to choose from.

Nice enough place…
** A couple of things fixed and it would be great!!
1. Soap in the bathroom would be nice.
2. Please clean the condiments (ketchup bottle was dirty and crusty – pretty gross, and the salt & pepper shakers were sticky and greasy).
3. My “medium” done hamburger was so black and well done I couldn’t finish it 🙁
4. Better and fresher hamburger buns would be a huge improvement. Mine was dry and cracked and deformed.
On a lighter note…the beer was super cold and wonderful 🙂

Excellent food! Great beer, liquor and wine selection. Enjoyable atmosphere with a friendly bartender, he was right, get the burger as it will be one of the best you have ever had. Its kind of a hidden gem.

Duke’s has a great atmosphere and I love grabbing a drink with friends after work here. We have a lot of laughs and consistently get great service. Definitely one of the better spots in Dodgeville.

Came here during our stay to go see the house on the rock and we love it Loved it instantly. Cool vibe cool employees and they play the best music. Rock and oldies all the good stuff. Watched the football game had some drinks, went to the house and came right back here to watch the Red Sox and listen to Nirvana and Queen 🙂 Wish we had a place like this in Ames IA!!

I am very disturbed how we were treated by the bartender. We had 2 rounds of drinks. Two people at our table had purchased rounds. We were sitting at a table, and I guess there hadn’t been a tip left yet at the bar for the bartender. There was a couple at the bar and some other people sitting at the end- Maybe 4 that were either other employees or friends of the bartender. At 1115 the bartender yells last call. One person at our table said wow what time is it and looks at their phone. The lady at the bar with a man said are you serious. All of a sudden the bartender is yelling at our table that he’s given us two rounds and received no tip, he’s not staying open for us. My husband had a tip on our table to leave for him, we were not going to leave without tipping him. I understand closing because it’s not busy enough, but to accuse people of not leaving a tip when we weren’t even done, it’s rude! I then wanted to leave without leaving a tip, as this is not the customer service I expect. Tipping is for providing good customer service. Our friend did leave a tip and tried to tell him, but he still was ornery. Saying he doesn’t work for free. Dukes WAS the place we would go for a beverage in Dodgeville, not anymore. This morning some friends expressed they don’t go there anyone after having the same experience. Two of these couples that this bartender ticked off one of the spouses is a bartender.

If you’re not a local, you’ll feel out of place the moment you walk in. We had to order our own drinks and food at the bar. Good burgers, mediocre service. Baskets we got our food in were beyond dirty and over used, clearly not cleaned guest to guest. Good selection of beer and drink options though. We would look elsewhere before returning here.
