My fiancé and I were looking for somewhere to eat and we hadn’t tried Dukes yet. We wanted to go to this barbecue truck in the area, but they’re closed while getting a bigger truck. So we went in.
They gave us some menus and a seat at a booth. There was no music playing or anything so it was just chatting and listening to other people’s conversations (till about half way through our meal when music started). Not really a problem, just a little odd. After being sat down, we stared at the menu for a good ten minutes or more before finally getting up and going to the counter to order since we really had no idea if we were supposed to have a waiter or not. We later had to ask for them to restock the paper towels because they were out, not really a big deal, just something to mention.
Now onto the food, and this accounts for all of those missing stars. I ordered the half rack of ribs and my fiancé ordered the 2 meat platter with pulled pork and brisket. I had Cajon fries and she had regular ones. Now the fries were pretty good. Not the best I’ve ever had, but far from the worst. But let’s face it, this is a bbq place, I didn’t come here for the fries.
The ribs were over cooked. Dry. Eaten better many places. My fiancé’s brisket was dry and tasteless. Those who say it’s excellent have likely never had well made brisket before. I don’t really knock points for this because I’ve never had brisket anywhere that wasn’t homemade that was even remotely good. My fiancé’s pulled pork was average at best… But you might say… “Well, this review has said it’s average, if slightly lacking in customer service.”
That’s true… But the final and key component in why their food is so terrible from my personal perspective, is the barbecue sauce. I LOVE barbecue sauce. I’ve tried over 100 different kinds of it. I like almost every kind I’ve tried. My favorite, by miles, is OMG Barbecue (it’s a guy out of Portland, look him up. Seriously, Dukes, look this guy up and sign a contract with him to get his sauce, it would flip this review instantly). The BBQ sauce served at Dukes… Well it’s hands down the worst I’ve ever tried. And since their meat is kind of bland and dry, it really needs barbecue sauce. I don’t know if it sat out too long and went bad or what, but it tastes like rotten fruit and vinegar, and it’s almost water thin. I ultimately just asked for a to go box after eating 1 rib so I could heat it up at work and lather some OMG habanero honey pineapple on the rest of them.
In summary, if you wanna get barbecue at a restaurant, I don’t recommend this place, but if you insist on going, I highly recommend bringing your own favorite barbecue sauce, or picking up a bottle of the OMG Barbecue sauce in Portland.
If they change their sauce and I find out, I’ll alter my review.
Our food came out pretty quick. My girlfriend and I both ordered the three-meat platter with Pulled Pork, Turkey and Brisket. I got the Mac and Cheese and she got the Cajun Fries. The Mac and Cheese was fantastic and the fries would have been great as well, had they not been luke warm. I was disappointed in the meat as well. All three came out luke warm, which was an immediate turn off. My Brisket was tough, and for the most part; flavorless with a hint of smoke. My girlfriend’s Brisket had a little more flavor, but tough as well. We both needed knives to saw through it. The Pulled Pork had a unique tang to it and was the best out of the three. Too bad it had been served luke warm. The Turkey was pretty flavorless as well, with a hint of smoke. I had to drench it in the XX Hot sauce, which is one of three sauces waiting for you at the table. When we got home, our dogs really seemed to enjoy the plentiful left-over meat.
The food is served on a plastic tray with waxed paper and a slice of white bread. Pretty common for a BBQ joint. It’s a shame because I was really looking forward to some good BBQ that was close to home. My girlfriend and I are Foodies and we like to support local mom and pop shops. But then she uttered something that I unfortunately had to agree with. She said that Famous Dave’s had better BBQ. Although I cannot stand chain restaurants, I unfortunately had to agree with displeasure. This place is fairly new and is perhaps going through some growing pains and seems like it would have potential. I may give it some time and give it a try later, when it gets its poop in a group.
