I never give bad reviews but just wanted to warm new comers before they go here. We love the James Island and Walterboro Dukes so we gave it a try. The two positives were the price and the fried chicken
This Dukes was less expensive than the one on James island. But I would pay that extra money every day. The chicken tasted the same as the other locations which is very good. But the rest not so hot . We got to the restaurant about 5:15. The place closed at 8:00. There was hardly any pork, the macaroni and cheese had run out, the corn was almost out, my wife got the last two hush puppies. Almost everything was down to the barest minimum. It wouldn’t be so bad if they replaced it. But it was taking forever to get the food out. The macaroni and cheese did not look and taste like the macaroni and cheese from the other locations. To be honest it look like it came from a box. The hush puppies were very small and hard. Everything just tasted off. If it was just the food I wouldn’t have written this review. But the state of the restaurant was terrible. The huge trash cans were overflowing with plates. I doubt it had been emptied all day. And the worst part was the bathroom. The men’s room was one of the most disgusting rooms I’ve seen. No water in the toilet and turds stuck to the side of the bowl. There is dirty toilet paper around as well. I’ve been to some nasty bathrooms but this one took the cake especially being in a restaurant. I didn’t even go. I just walked out. I can’t imagine what the kitchen looks like if the rest of the restaurant is like this. It could have been a really off night for them but reading some of the other reviews I don’t think so. I would definitely stick to one of the other Dukes locations.

I explained that I am a gastric bypass patient before I even got my plate. I asked if I could get a carry out so I could take it home because I can only take a couple bites while my fiance ate in for the buffet. After we paid they wanted to keep my carry out plate and my watch my fiance eat by himself. Now I fully explained exactly my intentions because there is no point in my getting a buffet when I can’t hardly eat. Will not come here again. We got a refund and left. They do not give a shit about people’s medical needs. I was a paying customer, my food was PAID for. This place is unethical, you can’t HOLD food from someone that paid for their food. New owners are obviously going to lose a bunch of business because they are worried about MONEY then treating their customers with dignity. Why the hell would I pay for an all you can eat buffet when I’m a gastric bypass patient and can only eat 1/4 cup of food. Wouldn’t even get my monies worth!!!! It would have been one thing had I not EXPLAINED my situation before hand, but I completely and totally did and was told okay until another lady came up and took my damn food and put it in the back.

Duke’s BBQ in Ridgeville is one of many loosely connected, family-owned Duke’s locations across South Carolina, and while this style of food and establishment is clearly popular in the South, it’s not somewhere I’d personally recommend—unless I were with others who were specifically craving this type of experience.

My first impression was less than favorable. The restaurant is housed in an old building and feels dark and dingy inside. The eating area could really use a serious makeover while still preserving its “indoor family picnic” vibe, complete with long communal tables. Overall cleanliness leaves much to be desired: streaky glass covered in fingerprints, stained tables, floors, and walls from years of use, greasy surfaces, and a bathroom that could benefit from a deep clean.

The setup is cafeteria-style: you line up, pay, grab one or two Styrofoam plates and plastic utensils wrapped in plastic—there’s essentially zero consideration for the environment. The self-serve buffet bar is awkwardly laid out, with no visible hand-sanitizing options. Staff behind the counter were also preparing Styrofoam to-go orders; some wore gloves, others didn’t, and some handled cash and served food simultaneously. Toward the end of the line is the beverage station with Styrofoam cups offering ultra-sweet tea, unsweet tea, and lemonade, all from powder. The final stop is a selection of sauces in squeeze bottles that were uncomfortably sticky and greasy to the touch.

As for the food: it was mediocre overall—very salty, bland, and lacking depth or spice. The offerings leaned heavily on Southern carbs like mac and cheese, rutabaga, sweet potato, and white rice, alongside deep-fried items such as hush puppies, okra, and chicken. The BBQ itself was average at best, noticeably dry and missing any real smoke flavor. Desserts consisted of bread-based cobblers, which were among the worst I’ve tried: bland, dry, and unremarkable.

On the positive side, the staff were genuinely nice, welcoming, and clearly working hard to keep up with a steady flow of phone and in-person orders. Parking is free and easy, with on-street and gravel/grassy options. An unexpected highlight was watching a train fly past nearby, horn blaring and lights flashing. At around $14 per person, the price felt appropriate for what was offered.

One important note: this is not a wheelchair-accessible space, as there is no ramp and a couple of steps at the entrance.

Overall, while Duke’s BBQ Ridgeville may appeal to longtime fans of this style of Southern buffet, it’s not a place I’d choose again unless accompanying others who were specifically craving it. :::

I was born in Summerville and have eaten at Duke’s for 40 or more years. It’s been awhile but I tried it today. Let’s just say that this place has no business representing the Dukes name. It’s awful. The building feels like it could fall down any minute. No heat. Filthy dirty, food was terrible. No need to say more. Please close this place fire Marshall. Thank you.

We have been coming here for a long time. The food is usually pretty good. The chicken is excellent. I would say the rice could use a little more love. It was kinda crunchy. Anyways it is a good place if you are in the area. It stays busy too.
