It pains me to write this because I really wanted it to do well, but the reality is that it’s a bit hit and miss. We purposely headed out to Grays River to visit Duffy’s and the covered bridge. It was a roasting hot day, and when we walked into the pub around lunchtime, we were the only ones there. It felt a little strange as we had expected it to be more of a destination spot given its history and music connections.

The lady behind the bar was lovely and read us a menu of specials that she said were made fresh that day. We assumed we were early and they were expecting a rush, as the list was quite extensive. After reading other reviews and trying the food ourselves, it was clear the specials weren’t fresh daily, which was disappointing. When chatting with her later, we asked about the antique store across the road, and she became quite aggravated, saying, “We are trying our best, we can’t do everything.” It was obvious they are struggling, which is sad because the place has so much potential.

The interior is wild and fascinating, filled with trinkets, prints, and curiosities, and the music and atmosphere were interesting. But when the check came to $80 for the two of us — after sharing a main, a slice of pie, and a soft drink each — it felt crazy for what we had. Another reviewer mentioned it seems like they price higher to offset quiet days, and I have to agree.

I’d recommend dropping in for a drink, as the place really is charming, but I’d avoid the food.

This place is like a small
Museum with a cafe and bar mixed with the exhibits. Notes of Irish heritage abound on every wall. But a closer look reveals a very personal slice of west coast Americana.
A friend turned me on to this place. The original owner was a former rock promoter and owner of a famous Portland venue we both played at.
Lots of old punk rock posters with names of artist both local and world wide that played in the venue. Really. Freakin. Cool.
I didn’t eat but everything looked yummy. There’s a bar area with stools. Some amazing handmade tables, obviously made by a local master craftsman with local timber.
Out back is open air seating with tables, that over looks a bend in the river. It’s a very calm and sort of breathtaking place.
The natural beauty of the place has a powerful aura, and if you catch it like I did when nobody was around, the quietness, the lack of sound is shocking when you realize it.
The interior is a work of art that’s evolving, and the exterior is serene nature just waiting to have a moment with you.

If you’re looking for cozy charm, hearty food, and the best Irish Coffee ever, Duffy’s Irish Pub is a must-visit. I originally came just for the coffee (which did not disappoint), but ended up staying for the full experience. Breakfast came out on a massive platter—definitely shareable—and everything tasted homemade and five-star.

The atmosphere is warm and packed with personality—fun knick-knacks, books, and little treasures tucked into every corner. It’s a small-town gem that makes you want to slow down, sit back, and enjoy every minute. Highly recommend taking your time here—this place is more than a meal, it’s an experience.

What a cool place! You go in to a dark wood pub type atmosphere and it just keeps getting cooler and cooler. The floors are crooked, trinkets adorn every surface. Irish music is playing, the gals working there were fun and provided good service. The food was spectacular, the potato salad was amazing, the hand pressed burger was delicious and juicy! Glad I stopped in!

Huge portions of absolutely stellar food. Got short ribs and dirty rice and the oysters New Orleans. Best oysters I’ve had in a long time! Excellent atmosphere and lovely service.

It was a Saturday in early November, and we were making our way from Mt. St. Helens toward the Washington coast — chasing that blend of salt air and wanderlust. Hunger started to creep in, but neither of us are the “chain restaurant” type. There’s no soul in laminated menus and corporate décor. We wanted something with a heartbeat.

We passed a few places still dark for the morning and the usual parade of fast food signs. Nothing called our name. The scenery along WA-4, though — that did. The winding river, the soft mist hanging over the trees — it begged us to keep going.

About halfway between Longview and Long Beach, the road curved alongside Grays River — home of the Historic Grays River Covered Bridge. We skipped the tourist stop, still dreaming of a coastal sunset, but hunger was now yelling louder than reason. And then, out of nowhere, my passenger blurted, “Hey, an Irish Pub!”

Perfect. I hit the brakes, swung the rental into a spot out front, and there it was — a weathered little building that looked like it had stories to tell. Rustic. Honest. The kind of place that makes you hope the food’s half as good as the vibe.

What we didn’t expect was what was inside.

This place was alive. Every inch was covered in something — mugs, steins, photos, paintings, armor, jewelry, posters, and more books than you could count. It felt like stepping into the brain of an eccentric collector with a love for stories and Guinness. My jaw dropped. It was chaos, but the kind of chaos that makes you grin.

We were greeted by a lovely woman who clearly ran the whole front of house solo. Only one other table was seated, so the place had that quiet hum of calm — not empty, just intimate. She explained that everything here was served family-style — hearty, shared, and cooked with intention. No menus full of filler, just a few dishes done right.

We went with the chicken and dumplings. Wild mushrooms, tender chicken cooked in its own juices, and a giant dumpling floating in a golden broth, surrounded by carrots, asparagus, and all the good stuff. When she placed it on the table with a big serving spoon and a smile, it felt like Sunday dinner at grandma’s.

We dug in, watching the river bend outside and the resident cat, Lucky, lounging under a nearby table like he owned the place. The food was soulful — the kind that stops conversation because everyone’s too busy savoring.

We didn’t make it to dessert — not for lack of wanting, but because that main course left no room to spare. I’ve heard the pies get mixed reviews, but pie’s like religion — everyone’s faith is personal. I still wish we’d tried one.

Before we left, our hostess shared a bit of the story — how the owner rebuilt the place over several years, and how the chef uses his mother’s recipes. You could taste that heritage in every bite.

This isn’t your average roadside stop. It’s not even your average restaurant. It’s a destination. A chance to sit, breathe, and eat something made with love while your phone signal mercifully disappears. You’ll take a few photos, but you won’t post them till later.

If you ever find yourself on WA-4, take the time to stop in at this hidden gem. Order something hearty, sip something Irish, and let the world slow down for a bit. You’ll thank yourself later.

What a fun find when taking the scenic route home!!! My husband and I enjoyed a delightful lunch on the patio and enjoyed the river views. Pictured is their salmon cake and the other is their Cajun braised short ribs. The food is quite the reverse from this casual and easy going establishment as by the plating it was quite decedent. Prices are very nice and we can’t wait to return!

This place is full of eclectic history. The owner is in his 80s and he and his wife cook all the food. It’s right on the Rover, stuffed full of odds and ends to look at. Take note of the band posters in the back from when he owned the Pine Street Theater in Portland. Such a cozy and wonderful spot.
They don’t keep regular hours so call to see if they’re open during off season. The food is fantastic and the servings are huge.

Oh, did I mention it’s right on the river?

Duffy’s Irish Pub has 5-Star food and service.

The cook is in his 90’s and starts preparing food in the morning. Don’t forget to make a reservation because the owners will close once they are tired!

We had Oyster New Orleans with perfectly cooked oysters. Amazing pasta and garnishes with radishes shaped like flowers, oranges and apricots.

Butter Beans & Dirty Rice with Braised Short Ribs was the best meal we have had in a while. Amazing sauce and extremely tender ribs.

We were more than happy with our meal and experience at Duffy’s Irish Pub. We will be back again.

Our family was taking a leisurely drive to Long Beach and Duffy’s came up, sadly when we arrived they were closed. Later I looked up Duffy’s and found that it is owned by Al Salazar of Pine Street Theater fame. No idea how many times my bands played there our how many bands I saw, such great memories! Al and I chatted about the old days, really felt blessed to see him again. Dining is by reservation only with limited menu – tasty food for sure.
